So, I picked this book up because I am very interested in reading stories about demons- I thought it would be a fun, Larissa Ione type read. Also, it was free and every time there is a free Ellora's Cave book I jump on it like it was a live grenade and I am protecting a bus full of kindergartners.
Anyways, to cut to the point, this book is simply not that good. It takes more than a ridiculously complicated taxonomy of various kinds of demons to make a Larissa Ione type book after all. Many times, what separates a bad book from a good book is the simple idea to "show, don't tell." In this case, I would tell the author "Please either show or tell because I have no idea what the hell is going on." Although this book was listed as being book 1 in a series, it almost seemed like I was picking up in the middle. It took me a really long time to figure out what Caleb's relationship to Keara was, why she was banished from hell, and what the heck was going on with her "testing" period. I think this was meant to be a sort of teaser, what will happen, sort of thing, but I really had a hard time figuring it out, and I read a helluva lot of romance novels.
Also, it defies belief that Keara would have gotten her heart broken over an asshole as scummy as Dean. I know that women are lied to all the time, but even after she was dumped she didn't figure it out? It really lowered my opinion that a heroine would have an affair with a married man and buy such transparent lies. After all of the bad things she did in the book, I wasn't sure she deserved an HEA, and I don't buy "I am half demon!" as an excuse- she clearly knew she was crossing some lines.
Anyways, there are a lot of fun ideas in this book- my favorite was an exclusive, all girls private school for demons. I would really love to read an Ellora's cave book set there. I also really enjoyed Natalya as a character- if you are going to be an evil demon, why not have some fun with it after all! I almost wished the book was about her quest to become queen of hell- I was definitely rooting for her more than Keara!
Also, I know I have snarked on Ellora's Cave covers before, but this one looks like Conan the Barbarian is being molested by a blow up doll.
Hero--angel type, blonde, hot patient with Keara. Caleb owns a bar, looked for her since childhood when contacted by dream, he's a demi-god.
Shero--half demon, Keara is trying to store up power to keep the Demon Lord at bay. She uses sex to gain power, but chooses evil men to suck power from, her nickname is "The Punisher."
Plot--a little diferent than most, damsel doen't need help, and she's not looking for love. Lots of secrets though. Sex--hot and lots of it. m/f and m/m.
So for, I am finding this book extremely boring and probably will not finish reading it. Found it very difficult following this story and unfortunately, stopped reading it mid-way through. I was so disappointed, as I had really enjoyed her 'Shared by Wolves' story very much.
Loved this series. The books were well written. Loved the story lines and characters. They all had plenty of humor and romance. Definitely an author to watch. A must read.
