A boy is whisked away on a remarkable adventure when he builds a replica of the first plane to fly solo around the world. The instructions in the airplane kit are bizarre, but the young boy assembles the plane in no time and rushes off to his favorite meadow to see it fly. But when the Winnie Mae takes off, the boy takes flight, too - on a journey that opens his eyes to the world in a whole new light. H. B. Lewis reveals the joys of imagination and the miracle of flight in thoughtful words and exquisite drawings that shimmer with energy and life.
H. B. Lewis is a freelance illustrator. He teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence and at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Now an accomplished pilot, Mr. Lewis first flew with his father in an airplane at the age of eight; on his sixteenth birthday he flew solo for the first time. Mr. Lewis lives in Rhode Island.
