Brumaru is, sufficient to say, `hip` nowadays with his unabashed hedonism and eroticism, sometimes sprinkled with explicit language (like in the volume `Infernala comedie`, written in the 1980s, and most of the volumes released after 1990). But, let aside the eroticism (that would make him an easy target once a form of traditionalism or another would rear its ugly head) and the limited array of motifs and objects (dew, butterflies, oranges, angels, snails, etc.) that make his oeuvre just `temi e variazioni`, Brumaru is a convincing poet, sincere in his show-off moments, highly melancolic behind his jokes, highly imaginative and a great read (imaginative enough to repel the most `realist` readers, though the `joke` aspect is very transparent). At his debut, Brumaru was associated with `Oneirism`, a small poetic group led by Leonid Dimov (another recommended poet if you like Brumaru), but even though many of his poems could be described easily as Oneirist `configurations` (= poems that only use the `laws` of dreams, instead of pretending to be transcriptions of dreams like automatic writings of the original Surrealist) or Mannerist `concetti`, his place in literature is simply unique. Brumaru's importance may ebb and flow in the future, but, especially thanks to the rhymes that hold so much importance to the casual poetry reader, he will remain for at least some while one of the easiest (post)modern Romanian poets to get into.
