Boston socialite Lila Adams had a wedding day none of her guests would ever forget. It all started when Bishop McKenzie, a rugged gunslinger with whom Lila had spent one passionate night, barged up the aisle and claimed the bride as his own. Too shocked to argue, Lila was swept away to Colorado, and the adventure of a lifetime.

Приятна забава, започнала с прекъсната с гръм и трясък сватба, последвана от нова сватба, две новопоявили се деца, прашно градче нейде в дивия запад и даже престрелка на площада.
My rating is based on the fact that this particular heroine isn't my kind of heroine. She's a double minded girl in the middle of a mess she helped created yet thumbing her snobby nose on the one who could help her. Moreover, her action often disagrees with what her mouth utters. Unfortunately, her transformation into a great pioneer woman did not convinced me that well since she still allowed circumstance to decide and talk for her. In the end she's still the spoiled brat that she was in the beginning. Otherwise, this could be a great book to anyone who does not mind the above heroine. Strong hero, enough intrigue to keep one reading, and interesting secondary characters. I heard lots of rave for this book that's why I picked it up.
Ok I normally don't care for western style historical romance (unless it's by Diana Palmer or some Brenda Joyce) however I made an exception for this book and I was not disappointed!!! It was amazing! So full of fun drama and passion. What more could I ask for. The story starts at a wedding and its all about a marriage in order to give a baby a name! I would love to know about the other characters in this book and I will try to see if they have their own story as well. I will not spoil this book by telling you more. I recommend this book if you like sweet passionate and feisty hero and heroine. I will be keeping this and reading again for sure.
The author tells the story of Lila and Bishop, set sometime after the Civil War. the H/h have a one-night stand following Lila's brother's wedding. 3 months later, after receiving news she is pregnant, Bishop shows up at Lila's wedding to a man she doesn't love, marries her himself, and Lila is on her way to Colorado before you can count to 9.
There are many surprises, as one might expect for a couple that really doesn't know each other well. Lila was raised in a stable Pennsylvania town, and finds herself in the wild west, trying to adapt to her new life.
There are elements to this story that I really appreciated. a lot of thought went into the main and secondary characters, and it made for a rich reading experience. Lila does a lot of growing up, while Bishop adapts to the huge changes in his lifestyle as well.
There is a lot of sexual tension, and the story has erotic elements and a few sweet love scenes. First published in 1996, it is not a new millennium erotic romance. Still, it is a fun, interesting, hot read, and I think is worth the time. It even made my re-read shelf!
She glanced up, her eyes meeting Bishop’s. “I wish you’d arrived too late,” she said, her voice more weary than angry. “If I’d already been Logan’s wife, there would have been nothing you could do to change things.” Bishop smiled down at her, his eyes pale blue and cold as ice. “I could have made you a widow.”
This story starts with a bang; a Pennsylvania wedding comes to an abrupt halt by Bishop Mackenzie. He claims to be the father of Lila Adam's unborn child. Lila was standing in front of the minister with an old family friend (whom she did not love -- to avoid a scandal regarding her pregnancy). Lila had a single night of passion with Bishop Mackenzie after her brother's wedding. Mackenzie left soon after, but Susan (Lila's new sister-in-law) wrote to Bishop about Lila's pregnancy.
Lila and Bishop spend the first several months adjusting to the changes in their lives. There are many changes; this is not easy because Bishop was previously married to a woman with little spirit, and Lila has it in spades. First, they travel to St. Louis, where Bishop finds his two children unhappy with their grandparents (the deceased mother's parents). So he presents his 5-year-old daughter, Angel, and his twelve-year-old son to Lila as his family. Lila is shocked but responds rather well to the children. Lila has a great deal of gumption; watching her grow into a nurturing mother to the two needy children is a treat.
The four travel to Paris, Colorado; Bishop is the local sheriff. This novel is a page-turner. It is easy to get involved in the pursuits of the four as they grow into a family in this rough town. Bishop has always kept his own counsel, and he finds it difficult to react to outgoing and accomplished Lila. However, the reader sees inside Bishop when his son Gavin decides he wants to be a shootist, just like his dad. Overall score = VG+.
Loved this!! Warm funny characters. I found myself laughing several times reading the antics of the different characters. This is what I like to call a keeper book. The kind you read and reread. This is one of those you don't want to read quickly. You want to absorb it slowly. And are sad when it's all done. 😔 I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Happy reading! Lori😸
I thought the whole premise of this story was far-fetched. Our virginal, high society h seduces H within a couple of days when he's visiting his friend and his wife. h gets pregnant. When Lila is about to marry, Bishop shows up. They end up married but she refuses to have sex with him. What?
I enjoyed Bishop's children whom our H has barely seen for 5 yrs and of whom Lila was totally unaware.
Loved it. I enjoyed every bit of it. Hard to imagine a Southern Belle being dropped in the middle of gun fights and no conveniences of the day. Throw in some new stepchildren and you have quite a mix. Anyone who enjoys this genre will love this book.
This is an engrossing story and one I would read again. Lila is head strong to the point of denying her own feelings and her own actions. It takes a western man and two step children to make her aware of what she has.
i can't decide what was more fun: this book or the looks I got on the subway as I read it on my commute to work?
In all seriousness, I did enjoy this!! Dallas Schulze's prose is clear, descriptive, and just perfect for setting the tone. This is my second historical romance directly from the romance section of my used bookstore (shout out to the half priced bookstore in Pittsburgh)! The ending was a bit rushed, not much of a falling action before the resolution. But, hey, I don't mind! I had fun and that's all that matters.
I absolutely loved this book! What a great story....thank you Dallas Schulze for writing it....it was just perfect as far as I am concerned!
The characters just came to life for me immediately, and I was transported back in time, felt like I was right there, something which, unfortunately, doesn't always happen with a book. I love historical romances and westerns are a particular favorite....something I think I inherited from my Dad, and something I will always be grateful for. The story seemed very true-to-life for me, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical western romance. It's definitely a keeper, and I WILL be reading this one again...and again!
I have just glanced over some of the other reviews, and felt I should add a bit about the heroine. I really feel the author portrayed her perfectly. I am a senior....raised by parents who were older, they were born at the turn of the 20th century, so I was raised in a Victorian manner...and trust me, the heroine's train of thought was bang-on! I was a teenager in the 60s, the era of hippies, 'make love, not war' and yet I was raised to be a 'proper Victorian lady'. When a 'proper lady' is placed in scenarios completely opposite to how she has been raised...there are self-doubts, mind-flips, confusion....it can be a helluva trying time, so again I say...Lila was perfect.
Socialite meets gunfighter at brother's wedding. Three mths later he's made it just in time to keep her from marrying the wrong man. After marriage she is moved to the wild west town where her husband is sheriff and they don't even have their own house to live in. If anything Lila and Bishop will keep you wondering what will happen next. It is an exciting read about the edge of the wild west what happens to two people who don't realize their in love till its almost too late.
I wanted to enjoy this western. But the heroine was way too annoying. There were parts that were good. The hero. I liked his kids. I even liked the mining town they settle in along with the townspeople. And I liked the heroine in flashes. But she was one of those people who worked against her own best interests and she did it stubbornly. I just wanted to slap some sense into her once or twice.
Lila Adams walks into the church to marry one man but ends the day out married to another. Bishop McKenzie gets to the church just in time to stop the wedding. Lila had planned to marry a childhood friend to cover the fact that she was pregnant. Bishop is a sheriff in a small Colorado town. Lila goes with her husband over the objections of her brother.
Not my typical type of book to read. Didn’t learn anything. No moral significance. No mystery or drama. What made the story so great was true love. They were drawn together like opposite ends of two magnets. A feel good book about love and family! In 2025 that special place is needed more than ever. A well written novel that I was glad to have read!
This was my second read by Dallas Schulze in a week and I enjoyed it possibly more than the first. The interaction between the characters was enjoyable.
