WHEN SHE BOLDLY PICKED UP A STRANGER IN A POSH ACAPULCO BAR...

Sabrina Chase meant only to have a casual fling. She never dreamed the rugged expatriate would appear in Dallas to rekindle passionate memories she preferred to forget. They were, she discovered, two of a kind.

Sabrina had dropped out of the corporate world, while Matt August seemed to have turned his back on the military. But Matt was a mystery. An ex-major trained in Central American operations, he was as evasive about his return to the Caribbean as he was persuasive about leaving his son behind. Sabrina was concerned about her ability to care for the troubled teenager, but concern turned to panic in the face of sudden danger. As they fled to a cabin in the wilds of Oregon, Sabrina knew it would be up to her to save them both, unless Matt -- who had shared only part of the truth even as he claimed all of her heart -- returned to find them... in time.

I didn't expect to like it so much. Her backlist stories have often irritating heroines without much sense or brain and an overwhelming clichéd femininity.

It was refreshing to read about this love story where he is the one doing laundry and she's able to stand on her own.

This was a curious read for me. Sometimes I enjoy reading older romances because societal changes since then really stand out. The h in this one was quite ahead of her time. No actually meant no and there was no treacherous body syndrome, was which prevalent in a lot of books from the 1980's. Hell, it was way too prevalent in the 90's. There were some surprising twists regarding thoughts of revenge that actually kind of surprised me. I can't say I really cared for the H, although his story was kind of compelling and the troubled relationship with his son felt authentic. I suppose part of me can't help seeing it from current day, wanting to rush in and wave my arms saying "Don't do it, find a dude without baggage like that!!!". Possibly the h is a better person than I am, haha, since she of course, did find a way to love him with all his flaws.

Intelligent, self-confident heroine. Emotionally damaged (ex-military) hero who's trying to get his life together. I enjoyed both characters separately quite a lot, and by the end I liked them together. They each provided the other with the emotional support to heal old wounds.

There were some light suspense elements in JAK's signature style and some laugh out loud moments (although I'm not sure how many were intentionally and how many were because... well, this books was written in 1985.)

Overall, a lot better than I was expecting given JAK's Harlequins from this time period.

This is a difficult one to rate because in some respects it's a product of its time while also being ahead of the curve for the time. There is an incident of assault but unlike some romance I've read from the 80s there's no presenting it as anything other than it was... but there were still issues even after that. Idk. Just... it was written in the 80s *shrug*. Oh! And even in 1985 she was including queer supporting characters!

This is one of her earlier book as Jayne Castle so it is not a paranormal, fantasy Romance. Even so it is well written and easily read. The scenario is pretty basic but I enjoyed it. I will be keeping it and reading again in a year or so. It is so wonderful to have a wonderful writer that you can go back to when you get tired of reading the so-so writers.

Sabrina Chase wanted a casual fling when she approached Matt August. It never happened. But the attraction was mutual and a month later he went to Dallas to follow up on it. He also took custody of his 13 year old son and took on a "mission" for the government.

I wasn't very fond of the plot and the characters weren't interesting enough .. Sabrina was a little dull .. Matt was alright but overall I wasn't really into them .. they lacked a spark.
