Wow! It's been a long time since I've read about a heroine that was THIS messed up.

The description of the book explains it all: they sleep together one night without him knowing her identity and then she refuses to let the guy know it was her, even when they become friends. Even though he obviously enjoyed having sex with her and wants to find out who she is, she has all these ideas that the guy would be appalled if he knew because she's not "his type". It's not as if she's a criminal: she just dresses horribly to not attract men's interest and then blames them as shallow when they don't notice her!

Instead of acting like a mature adult and confessing, she keeps him at arms length but the guy is so engaging that they become friends. I don't think she owed him the truth when they were just casual acquaintances (he had sex with her without knowing who she was and had to live with it if that was her decision) but once they were friends and things started heating up, she should have owned up and told him!

The guy is so dumb and clueless about her identity, even though her height should have told him all - she's described as being almost as tall as him, and how many women that tall are his sister in law's friend?

Anyhow, when he discovers the ruse (on his own, mind you, she never tells him), he's understandably angry and says some hurtful things. When he calms down and comes back to apologize for his reaction, she acts like SHE'S the wounded party and sends him on his way!! Then she proceeds to act like he killed her puppy. It was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen.

The book had some good parts (that's why the additional 1/2 star). I really liked the interactions of them as friends - they were very funny together. But all her craziness was too much!

This is Lori Foster, so of course I loved it!

When shy repressed Carlie shares a passionate night with Tyler, she knows it was a one time thing. Tyler was out of her league. Until he wasn't.

Tyler felt a strong physical connection with his mystery harem girl but when he starts spending time with Carlie, he finds himself connecting with her on a whole new level. But what will happen when he finds out his sultry harem girl and his prickly spinster-ish best friend are one and the same???

I'm a sucker for friends turned lovers romances and Carlie and Tyler were great friends. I loved their banter, their easy friendship. Their love was emotional as well as physical. I really liked reading the heated progression of their romance.

Carlie definitely had the most baggage regarding her past and although I sympathized with her insecurities, I wish she hadn't dragged out the drama so much.

Tyler was sexy and sweet with a bit of cockiness thrown in. I loved him, he was the perfect amount of outrageous to balance out Carlie's tight reins of her emotions. I loved that he wanted Carlie for who she was on the inside. And I appreciate that he was so forgiving and in love with his woman that he didn't hold her actions against her (well, at least not too much!) The ending did feel a bit rushed but the HEA made up for it.

This was safe. No OM/OW drama, no cheating, no epilogue (sadly) no overly sad parts & no virgins. This was a cute light on the drama/angst story.

This is a sweet romance about two people who have had plenty of heartache in their past finding their way to happiness. I really enjoyed this book. Carlie was a character I could definitely relate to. After a marriage gone wrong, she closes herself off to men, dressing in drab clothes that conceal her figure. Her self esteem has taken a beating and its hard for her to let people in. Tyler grew up with a mother who cared more about booty calls than raising her two sons. Once grown, he's achieved success as a lawyer and can have his pick of the ladies. He begins to get restless with that lifestyle and wants something more. These two unlikely find each other and form a friendship that develops from there. That's more than I should probably said without giving too much away... :)

I somehow missed this early Foster book, possibly because I have a tendency to skip Harlequin books. I've been let down by so many. This one is ...okay. The female lead is annoying. The male lead is annoying. If this had been my first Foster I'm not sure I'd pick up another. Which would have been a mistake. Her books are much better than this. Skip this. Read the rest.

Guys. I don't know if this is the normal price or if I should chalk this up to a New Year's miracle, but this book was only .86. EIGHTY-SIX CENTS. It's like I stepped into a Tardis and went back to 1962 and people are smoking pot in the parking lot and if the books are too expensive in 1962 I can jump back in that Tardis and go to 1902 or 1925 or 1933 and I'll somehow find a time where ALL books are .86 and it'll be awesome. DO YOU GUYS KNOW HOW MANY BOOKS I CAN BUY WITH $10 IF THEY'RE ALL ONLY .86???

I was so excited about the price that this book could have pretty much sucked and I probably still would have had some giddy, bouncing moments. Oddly enough, the book didn't suck. There were things that were driving me a little crazy about it, but the writing was solid, the characters were interesting and the overall plot was intriguing.

So, what wasn't I so keen on? Carlie's weirdly standoff-ish and almost prudish behavior. I think I could have stood it more if she wasn't so judgmental. Some of her observations about Tyler came off as almost hateful. I can accept that she had issues but she spent a blistering night with this guy and she still treated him like he was a certified man-whore. Hello, honey, you slept with him of your own free will while concealing your identity. Get off your high horse.

Despite all that, I really did like the book. Everything stemmed from Carlie's self-esteem issues and the fact that she doesn't want to give another person the position of power over her. She afraid that loving someone will make her weak. Tyler also has issues and together they somehow manage to maneuver around one another enough to end up in each others orbit.

Honestly, I liked the book. It was fun and sexy and it had a GREAT price.

WOW The cover for this one is OKAY at best but WOW what an amazing story line!!

I just love how deep you get in the two main characters Carlie is a shy once divorced women who one night at a Halloween party gives herself to her best friends brother- in-law while wearing a mask and he has NO Clue who it was who rocked his world and who he felt a strong connection with.

Tyler is a well off bachelor, who is played by women who went a way to get to the top.

Carlie is a school teacher who has been hurt deep deep down to her heart so she hides herself and body behind ugly clothes... until her best friend pick out her Halloween costume for a party (if you would call it a costume.).

After an amazing night of great crazy sex Carlie sneaks out on Tyler so he does not know who it was.... then they start to hang out as friends... ..

and well in the end they learn that first impressions are never what they seem :)

Great Story line and very well written :) A must add to any book shelf!!

Surprisingly entertaining even though it contains one of my least favorite device: hidden identity. If you suspend disbelief a bit, the interaction between Carlie and Tyler was charming and mostly believable. I though Foster handled Tyler's confusion over his feelings quite well. The back-and-forth went on a little too long, but I stil enjoyed the book more than I'd hoped.

I hated this book. Carlie is not redeemable as the female lead. I just wanted to shake her through the whole book--get over your frumpy clothes and cranky ass attitude!. Tyler, the male lead, kept me in the book, but really couldn't figure out why he cared.

I skipped over the sex and just finished the book because I started it.

Liking the sexy cover and the great price (86 cents at Amazon), I couldn’t resist this purchase while later thinking “Oh no, not another “frumpy” heroine.” But to my surprise, I liked this book.

First, I admit Carlie did grate on my nerves (a little) at times, but she wasn’t over the top and I found myself liking this intelligent, funny, caring woman. Carlie McDaniels is an emotionally tortured heroine. She is all alone having no family who love her. Having been raised by a grandfather who did not love her and surviving a disastrous, emotionally abusive marriage has made her into the independent woman she is. Her frumpiness came from wearing drab, baggy clothing that hid her figure. Knowing why she did this helped me like her more.

Tyler Ramsey is a tall, handsome hunk and partner in a successful law firm with his brother Jason. Having had a difficult childhood and being completely neglected by their mother, Jason is the only person who’s ever cared for him. Women are always throwing themselves at him and lately his life has become boring. That is until he spends one magic evening in the arms of a mysterious, provocative, sexy, masked lady and his frustrated attempts in discovering her identity.

Shortly thereafter, a new friendship is formed between Tyler and Carlie as they work together helping disadvantage children through the after school sports program. Tyler’s life hasn’t encouraged him to trust women but he finds himself liking Carlie for her honesty, her ability to make him laugh and she keeps him humble. Carlie is always fighting her feelings for Tyler. She refuses to love and trust again, to become vulnerable. But there is hot chemistry here, strong in its intensity. And what will Tyler do when he finds out the truth of his mystery lady?

As I’ve often said, there are times I enjoy a quick easy read. Harlequin meets my requirement and I wasn’t disappointed with this one. I haven’t read many books by this author and I surprisingly found myself liking this story. I found it in places poignant and funny while touching on courage; having the courage to face your fears; having the courage to be yourself; and having the courage to trust in yourself and others. Not bad for 86 cents!

A few Quotes that I liked:
-- Tyler had touched more than her body. He’d thrown away the misconceptions she’d had about herself, stolen her fears and her disappointments.
--Children should enrich life; they should be cherished and protected, not considered a burden to be tolerated.
--Why do you care, Tyler? I’m not some bird with a broken wing you need to teach to fly. I don’t want to fly. Walking is much more my speed.

[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

This is very obviously an early book by Lori Foster. And I did not really enjoy it. I was glad when it was finally over.

The characterization is not good. Foster’s new books are stereotypical, sure, very formatted, each of her books extremely similar—but that’s what you’re looking for when you read one of her books (at least, I am). Her characters have good backstory, they’re relatable, they’re understandable. The characters in this book were not.

Their attraction to each other was instantaneous, but not buyable. I didn’t believe it from the beginning. I understand how characters can have a crazy one-night stand, but not like these two. That in itself was a big problem, because it’s a very large part of the book, and I was just not buying it.

I did not care for Carlie. She’s a bit annoying, playing too hard to get, and not very likeable. As in, I didn’t really understand why Tyler liked her. I didn’t really care for Tyler, either.

Strangely enough, the characters didn’t seem all that stereotypical. There were glimpses, but it wasn’t so over the top like in her newer books. Tyler wasn’t a huge alpha male, and Carlie was more hard-edged than her normal characters. It’s actually disappointing, seeing that she could create more original characters, could have made them better as she grew in her writing, but instead stuck with the same format.

The writing wasn’t very good. It didn’t pull me in, it didn’t show the attraction or the characters’ feelings very well.

Overall, this book has proven to me that I need to stay away from Foster’s earlier books, and stick with her newer ones.

I almost didn't finish this book.

Generally I really enjoy Lori Foster's books, her unique characters, especially heroines, that are strong, yet mostly not bitchy.

Well, Carlie certainly made my head spin.

She was a bitch. Stick-up-her-ass, boring, judgemental bitch.

She judged the hero for almost everything he did and even some things he didn't do. I honestly don't understand what he saw in her.

I gave this book the rating of two stars thanks to the hero and some funny dialogs, that are trademark of Foster's books. Since I came to understanding that this was the first story Lori Foster published I can only appreciate what a progress tha author made.

This is Lori Forster's first book, originally published in 1996 and reissued in a new hot avatar in 2009 by Harlequin. I read this as a part of an event on Goodreads, where we were to read one book by Lori Foster in August. I don't know why I always end up (unknowingly) picking up the author's first/second attempt. This book had a new looking cover, and turns out.. it was old wine in new bottle!

This one is a quick read that you would enjoy on vacation or to take along on you errends. Lori Foster knows how to creat characters that are real and believable.

This is a really great story of love and attraction that will make your heart beat a little faster, but will also have you wanting the characters to make things work between them.

A műfajhoz mérten szórakoztató olvasmány. ;)

I could have rated this one higher, but I didn't due to personal annoyance at the intro and also due to the ill fit of the heroine's past in light of how the relationship progressed. Oh, and the behavior of others when she did sort of react in a logical manner.

Ok, our h has exactly one friend in the whole world. She's a bit of a wallflower, and deliberately tries not to to attract male attention. Her friend decides she must come to her halloween party and our h rather stewpidly uses the excuse of a lack of a costume. Best friend, who really should know better if she's the friend everyone claims her to be, gets her a harem costume that's barely there. Of course h loses her nerve and bolts. Of course, she unwisely doesn't run home, but rather hides in the poolhouse where the resident playboy and brother-in-law to her bestie follows her and introduces her to the idea of an orgasm. She wears a mask and refuses to take it off.

Over the course of the next however many chapters, he insinuates himself into her life - as a "friend" while managing to be rude and insulting. Somehow she doesn't take it personally and allows him to steamroll her. Then he spends the night. Then he finds the blue contacts that, for reasons known to absolutely no-one (was not explained) and puts two and two together. He goes off on her, is rude for realz, insulting, mean... somehow she hides in the bathroom. He leaves.

After a few days - and his getting yelled at a bit by his brother and sister-in-law who express concern that the h will retreat into her shell again, he goes back and she reveals how her marriage was. He asks her to marry him, and is upset that she tells him she has no intention of ever marrying again.

His brother is unhappy with her over this. I don't know that I saw how her bestie reacted.

A few weeks later, she decides she loves him and plots to seduce him in the pool house, HEA.

Time table is uncertain but it was before Thanksgiving. And the first meeting was the halloween party. So...a month maybe? That she's supposed to go from repressed and uncertain of herself to a femme fatale? And eager to jump into a marriage in spite of it only being two years since she escaped a marriage that was, based on her description, abusive? Right. I would think our H would realize this was something that couldn't be pushed at this point. I would think her bestie would realize that even if she didn't have the dirt on it, it was really bad, and stop trying to drag the h outside her comfort zone.

Instead, she has a best and only friend who dresses her like a ho, when she knew or least should have known, this was too much for her, she has a bestie's husband who gets snide because she's essentially afraid of marriage, she has a pest who steamrolls her into way more relationship than she's ready for and goes off on her when he finds out she was the girl hiding, yes; hiding, in the pool house, then, after listening to her describe a marriage that fortunately didn't involve bruises or broken bones but hell, a husband that, for want of a better word, raped her on a regular basis, gets his tighty whities in a knot because she doesn't want to get married.

And somehow, because ROMANCE and we gotta have a HEA!! Even if in reality it would take a lot of patience and therapy, and a long period of platonic getting to know each other (along with a few panic moments when he gets carried away), we get it in 2 weeks because she's miserable that the impatient jackass got offended rather than dialing back a bunch of notches and trying to actually win her over.

This was an OK romance by a new-to-me author. Carlie is a very isolated woman who keeps to herself and wears ridiculously unflattering clothes so that no one will notice her. (Doesn't she realize that those very same clothes would make her stand out and be noticed because of their frumpiness?) When her one good friend, Brenda, talks her into dressing her beautiful body in a harem costume for a Halloween party, a good-looking player, Tyler, sees her and must have her (of course). He follows her to a private spot, and they both give in to their urges. But, in the manner of Cinderella, she flees without him getting her name. Fast forward to the school year when Tyler helps Carlie with her students in an afterschool program. They joke around and become great friends, but she's still reserved. Of course, they fall madly in love, but she keeps putting up roadblocks. What dropped this to 3 stars for me was her finding problems all the time--it's not you it's me, I'm not worthy, I can't have a relationship, blah blah blah. And she seemed to expect him to apologize all the time for wanting her and wanting to build their relationship. That bugged me. But the romance ended up with a HEA, so it was a fairly pleasant and quick read. Nothing special, but it had nice moments. I'll probably look for more from this author.

Cutest love story.

This book was great. I am in a place such as Carlie where she has reached the age in her life where she is done and over with the games. She doesn't entertain anyone or anything that's not worth her time. And even when it is, she's too crazed to see it. Tyler is such a strong character. He goes from being portrayed as a player, to being such a open and vulnerable man putting his all into the one thing he wants.....Carlie. I loved the way they met and can't believe how Carlie was able to keep that to herself for what seemed like the whole damm book. This is my first book by this author and I will certainly be buying more of them!

Such a great Lori Foster book! I am glad she re released as I had not read before. Carlie hides herself from everyone around her, but at a costume party her friend Brenda throws she dresses up and shoes more than usual. Tyler sees her and follows her where they have a great time. But he doesn't know who she is. They are forced to work together. Tyler starts chipping away at her hard exterior. He falls for her but she keeps him away from her. After a great night he finds out That she is who had had the great night with. Will they get over this obstacle and can Carlie open her heart? A wonderful great read!

Fun story where our ugly duckling heroine discovers love. Parts of the book haven’t aged well, I found both the leads kind of rude. But especially the hero - this prying into her weight especially annoyed me. This is more a current me problem but I found him more rude on the beginning than charming.

However the book gets better in the latter half. I did like that they fall in love without a need for a glow up from the heroine. It made it more interesting for me.

Then the book made me smile so I overlooked the silly “banter” in the start. Cute premise and I liked it over all.

That mystery woman phone call um what. The. Fuck. Is she 16? I mean it’s simply not believable that someone intelligent and compassionate (as we’re told repeatedly) can also be so appallingly immature.

Carlie was an absolute mess and showed zero character growth throughout. No self awareness or introspection and happy to label and judge all men based on one. Tyler on the other hand did grow but was also a pig and rude.

cute little story, definitely hot but I'm still not getting the Lori Foster that I first read which turned me on to her books. everything has been so goody, goody happy go lucky. then there's a couple of series in the middle that first caught my attention, where the men were bad boys with good intentions and naughty tendencies and dirtier mouths. I miss those types of books from this author. the kind with a little more danger. 🤷🏾‍♀️

More like 2.5* I like Lori Foster and normally thoroughly enjoy her books, but this was just meh. I did not connect with any of the characters. The story was predictable: good girl tames bad boy. There wasn't anything new or unique about it. Disappointed though I was, this will not tarnish my love for Lori Foster.

Wow. The hero is a major pig in this one.

The first time he meets up with her, he is already commenting on her appearance and her clothes. And he keeps crossing the boundaries she sets. That’s the major thorn for me in this one. She tells him over and over to leave, to stop with his remarks, to stay away from her… and he keeps pushing her. This is supposed to be romantic?

Blech.

Not so sure

After rereading this book after a couple years, I find that I really don’t like it anymore. I don’t like how Tyler’s feelings mean absolutely nothing and how Carlie can be a straight b***h with no black lash. I dunno. This book is no longer for me.
