It’s the second half of Shohoku’s debut game in the National Championship. Toyotama boasts the top three scorers from the Osaka regionals, and they’re bent on nothing less than crushing Shohoku! But Coach Anzai’s got a plan: steal the ball, run and score, facing Toyotama’s run-and-gun style head on! If Shohoku can’t beat Toyotama at their best game, what chance do they have of beating last year’s champion Sannoh in the next round?
I am now immersed in the world of Slam Dunk, and it's all Tekehiko Inoue's fault. He keeps delivering thrilling matches one after the other, and I'm all out of breath with how exciting it all was.
This is another solid volume. Inoue efficiently crafts a story behind the Toyotama players in a short amount of time, while still managing to write and draw a compelling story that us equally funny, inspiring and exciting.
Sakuragi once again shines as he has always been in the previous games. He is now more professional than ever, while still committing those funny rookie-ish errors.
Shohoku, as was expected, won their first game of the nationals. Sanoh are their next opponent. Will they win the match against the strongest team in Japan?
This volume showcases the second half of the Totoyama game, and the consequences of it. Takehiko Inoue waits until halfway through this volume, nearing the end of the game itself, to give the Totoyama players some background and wow does he kill it. As our main character Sakuragi has his own selfish reasons for joining the basketball game (impressing Haruko), we've slowly watched him grow to appreciate the sport and love basketball on its own. The Totoyama players have a very different relationship with basketball, and their coaches, and seeing them on display here is great. The Nationals only have the best teams competing and Inoue wants the reader to appreciate how hard every team has worked to get here- even the antagonists! He also shows the limits of different characters and strategies, making a key point to show how even great teams have an insurmountable wall they have to find a way to crush through.
Slam Dunk, Vol. 24 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (207–215) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon concludes the first round of the National Tournament with the first round match between Shohoku High School and Toyotama High School. The second half starts and Kaede Rukawa returns, replacing Yasuharu Yasuda. Ryota Miyagi no longer pays attention to the insults hurled at him by Toyotama's players, and he puts together some effective offense.
Shohoku reduces their disadvantage until they finally tie the game at 81 points each. During a timeout Minori Kishimoto from Toyotama has an argument with Tsuyoshi Minami, but when Minori insults Kanehira the coach, he ends up being punched by him. Kanehira allows Minori to keep playing, but criticizes his arrogance and violence.
As the game continues, Rukawa starts scoring, and Shohoku takes the lead. Minami tries to hit Rukawa once again to score, but as he notes Rukawa is not afraid, he stops his attack. However, he is injured while falling to the floor and is subbed. With Hanamichi Sakuragi once again scoring, Shohoku goes up by ten points with only two minutes left in the game. Minami returns to the game, and all the players from Toyotama decide to play without committing fouls. Toyotama tries to catch up, but Shohoku manages to defend the net until the game ends.
After Shohoku wins, Takenori Akagi receives a call from Superintendent Karasawa who congratulates Shohoku, but warns them that in the next round they will face Sannoh, which is considered the strongest high school basketball team in Japan.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. The first round of the Nations between Shohoku High School and Toyotama High School has concluded with Shohoku advancing to the next round to only face a team more formable than one they have just faced. It is interesting that Toyotama changed tactics midgame, from being an aggressive team to becoming a more balanced team, but it was too late to win the game.
All in all, Slam Dunk, Vol. 24 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
*This review is for the series as a whole with 4.5 out of 5 stars*
I’ve posted 2 articles about Slam Dunk early this year so I’m sure you guys already have an idea how I adore this series. The anime series was incredible but its manga counterpart is beyond incredible, it was AHA-mazing!
I’m not a sporty kind of girl and I don’t think I’ll be anytime soon, but I think what’s great about reading books and watching shows is that you learn and (kind of) experience a lot of things you don’t normally do in real life. And because of Slam Dunk, I learn to appreciate sports stories and eventually love them.
When I started reading this manga, it felt so nostalgic. It’s not so different in the anime so while reading it, I keep on picturing out all those episodes which I think made my reading experience even more enjoyable.
Slam Dunk showcases a great team work. What I learn to appreciate about sports stories/shows is that it’ll give you a lot of lessons about what it means to be a great sportsman. And Slam Dunk absolutely slammed dunk that part!
I usually watch the anime series first before reading its manga counterpart and as for Slam Dunk, I’ve watched it quite a number of times already and I don’t think I’ll ever stop watching it, *wink. Even after watching the anime, I can still feel the tension, the suspense, and the excitement while reading this manga.
As you can read on its title, this manga centered around the sports basketball and through it weaved a really good story everyone of us will enjoy and appreciate whether you’re into sports or not. Another thing I love about reading manga is that it will never ceased to make you laugh with its funny scenes and Slam Dunk had it big time! I lost count how many times I laughed my heart out reading this masterpiece.
The drawings were really so good too plus those facial expressions were epic, especially Sakuragi’s, haha.
This story has a main character but I love that it didn’t just center around him but the author also gave its other characters a chance to share their own story. I love the character development as well especially Sakuragi’s.
And speaking of Sakuragi, I didn’t eventually like him at first. He’s definitely trouble and I didn’t quite appreciate his annoying antics and his excessive bragging. But all throughout the story, you can’t definitely help it but like his character. As I’ve said above, Sakuragi’s character development is definitely one you should see. From being this good for nothing delinquent, he became a true sportsman. I just absolutely love his improvement not just in basketball but eventually as a person. It’s definitely hard for me to explain but I just LOVE Sakuragi. Ofcourse he can still be an airhead sometimes but I can see now that it’s one of the things that makes him quite likeable, haha.
Slam Dunk has some pretty amazing group of characters and as I’ve said in this article, they come in varieties so I’m sure a lot of readers can find some characters they can relate and love.
The anime series left off the national championship and let me tell you guys, it was already good as it is. It was full of intense scenes with a right blend of humor but the national championship parts were sooooooo good I can still feel its intensity even after finishing this manga. Actually, I cried pretty hard when they won! You should definitely read it!!!
Although the ending felt short which ofcourse makes you want to ask for more, I guess it was still a pretty good and hopeful ending, not just for team Shohoku but for the other teams as well. Besides, after that intense match with Sannoh, I don’t think Slam Dunk failed me.
So if you’re looking for an intense sports shonen manga to read, Slam Dunk should be on top of your list.
Yea hi! I'm writing another review for vol 24! I've done vol 23 so check it out from my profile! So this volume...it was really interesting! So the author Inoue made the background story for the characters and it was interesting. Sakuragi, who is a selfish player on his team improves his character. In the story, Sakuragi's team is playing the second-half game with the Totoyama team. The author gives the background of Totoyama's team and made me and the readers understand better about the opposing team. I think it was funny, interesting, and exciting. Well, Sakuragi's team won eventually with Rukawa injured. If u think this is an interesting story and it is please read this book.
I am in a race to finish the rest of the series before another patron borrows the books from the library! Only one library has Slam Dunk in their collection, and suddenly, someone else has started checking them out! Will I be able to get the rest of the series without having to wait for a month??
This was another great installment. Toyotama is a nasty team,, and I wanted Shohoku to kick those guys into tomorrow and maybe teach them some respect at the same time! Poor Rukawa and his abused face :(
I think the art here is the best so far, obviouly Inoue has an incredible hand but this was amazing.
Here conclueds the match aganst Toyotama and, i know this is not news but, i keep being amazed by Inoue, his abilitie to, in only two volumes (in the case of Toyotama but he's done it before) he makes the other team so interesting, and just like with Shoyo, Kainan, etc. it's impossible not to care about them (even though i hate them and i want Shohoku to win).
Great volume overall, i'm starting to panic because i just realized i'm near the end of the series, oh God, oh God!
Rukawa comes back and strikes again(The dark knight strikes again??? cringe) Anyway yes while this was good, I didn't agree with Jie sensei's philosophy at all. Seemed like a scumbag. Yeah. Still understood them though so good writing. Funny how akagi and saku both rebounded the ball together lol they got so fired up. Sannoh seems tough. Onward.
Akagi has a dream for Shohoku to make it to nationals. Now they have. But Captain Akagi's next dream is to win nationals. But how can they do that if they can't even win the first round? Toyotama's team is tough and vicious with an Ace Killer in their squad. Will dirty play be the end of Akagi's dreams?
Shohoku won against Toyotama even though Rukawa was injured. Thus, Sakuragi got his time to shine and his training finally paid off. He made decisive points through jump shots and got the most rebounds which ensured their win
One of the more iconic of sports manga. It's the first series where I actually both read the manga and watched the anime. It has flawed protagonists, growing up pains, colourful characters, and beautiful meaningful relationships, all neatly wrapped around the context of college basketball.
At the time of this review, I have read all the volumes in the series.
In this volume, we are continuing the game from volume 23. We see how much of a beast that Rukawa is. We also see the backstory of Shohoku's opponents. There was also surprising scene with the other team's coach.
