I find this kind of book to be entertaining, but I remain skeptical. In fact, I treat this kind of book about "supernatural" mysteries as science fiction. This book is one I read years ago and recently unearthed to be added to the books I would donate to the local library book sale, and I quickly reread it. It purports to describe an area like the Bermuda Triangle, where there have been many strange disappearances of planes and ships and sightings of strange lights or UFOs etc.. In Cochrane's book, the main anomalous area is "the Marysburgh Vortex" at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. I googled to see if there have been any updates on this since the book was published in 1980. Of course, like the more famous Bermuda Triangle, there was much interest in the 70s, but it has just about died down since that time. I did find references to a "Lake Michigan Triangle" in the last several years. I enjoyed the stories, such as the one about the Canadian ship, the "Speedy," lost in 1804 in Lake Ontario, along with all her crew and passengers. Searchers never found a trace of it. What made it particularly disastrous was that many Canadian government officials had been onboard and were lost. There was a report of a "monolith" in the lake which (conveniently) vanished. Cochrane speculates that it was alien and acted as a magnet to draw the ship away, perhaps to another dimension. That's what I mean about science fiction. The author is prone to jump to conclusions that sound like science fiction. Still entertaining. *** (3 stars), meaning OK, not good, not bad.

I bought this book after learning about the Marysburg vortex in Prince Edward County in Ontario. I have a rural property very close to or in the vortex and weird things happen occasionally. This was SUCH an interesting read. Truly fascinating stuff.
