Detective School Q is a seriously underrated manga. I loved the anime as a teen. I remember being super excited to watch the show, trying to solve the cases myself as the team unravels the mysteries. Kyu was my first manga crush. I was awed by the way the cases were solved. It feels good to read the manga after a few years.

The plot has crime, suspense, mystery and thriller elements to it. The logic behind the deductions are awesome. I wish there was no fan service. Although it is fine to see the recap in each episode of the anime, reading it in each chapter of the manga feels redundant. Otherwise, it's great.

I highly recommend this manga to everyone!

#Sekolahnyamemangngurusinpembunuhan

3. Cowok macho
4. Cowok IT
5. Cewek

Keywords: growth, friendship, detective school

I have watched an episode of the animated version of Tantei Gakuen when I was studying in secondary school. As a lover of detective stories, it has aroused my interest. However, it was not until I have graduated from university that I have finished this manga.

The story itself is simple yet complete. The protagonist, Kyu, was a boy who dreamed to become a professional private detective. He joined the entrance examination of the Dan Detective School (i.e DDS), which was founded by the renowned detective Dan Morihiko, and was admitted into the special Class Q - a class of bright youngsters who would be inheriting Mr. Dan's position when he retired. In DDS, Kyu and his fellow classmates, Megumi, Ryu, Kazuma and Kinta, had to learn all sorts of essential knowledge and skills to become a professional detective as well as participate in crime investigation as training. During their adventures, they have come face-to-face with Mr. Dan's arch enemy, the Pluto, and a large mystery involving Kyu and Ryu together. At the end, they have successfully defected Pluto and solve all the mysteries together.

To me, this is not more than a typical shonen manga which depicts the growth of five teenagers through laughter and hardships. What I really appreciate is how the author has organized his story. The story is basically formed by small episodes with a main story line (i.e the mystery about Ryu's family history and the battle against Pluto) linking them up. The author was able to make the small episodes enjoyable, and at the same time, developing the main plot to the fullest. I absolutely admire how he has laid down foreshadowing in different episodes and use them to build up the last episode. Even though I have some doubts about the solutions of some of the mysteries, it did not affect much the enjoyment when I read the manga.

In addition, the character development was done outstandingly. Though simple, the author managed to provide enough screen time to illustrate the growth of most major characters, especially Kyu and Ryu. At first sight, Ryu was a genius who was difficult to get close. However, after several adventures with classmates in Class Q, he gradually lower down his guard and befriend with them. As he gradually realized the truth about his family, he began to show nervousness, uncertainty and fear. But at last, his friendship with Kyu has helped him to get through all these turmoil and achieve his dreams. The protagonist, Kyu has also undergone a major change. Though a quick-witted and observant boy, Kyu was nonetheless a bit childish. He has dreamt to become a detective, but did not have a clear understanding of the path he has chosen. Through different adventures, Kyu has not only learnt how to confront with hardships on his own, but also became determined on his dream. He has at last grown in spirit. Other than this, the relationship between Kyu and Megumi is also well developed, which is really rare in shonen manga.

Overall speaking, the manga is quite a nice entertainment. The plot is concise and organized excellently, the character development is well done. It is a good choice for people who likes to read detective stories and shonen manga.

I really love detective stories. Feeling that Detective Conan is not enough to satisfy my thirst of detective stories, I search and ask for more. This series is a gift from my uncle and I find it a lighter version of detective stories than Detective Conan. The latter tends to use too complicated tricks I cannot follow and I don’t think will have even a small chance of success in real life. This manga, on the other hand, features simpler tricks that are more possible to be found in real life. And so, I have a greater chance of success to guess who the culprit is and the tricks used in the case.

DETECTIVE SCHOOL ENTRANCE EXAM

The series follows the story of a third-year middle school student named Kyu who wants to become a detective. He takes the entrance exam to Dan Detective School, a school owned and headed by the legendary detective Morihiko Dan, whose graduate students are elite detectives actively working in Japan and overseas. The test is divided into three tests, and all of them are crazy hard. Not to mention that there are so many people taking the test, ranging from students to even policemen, and in a quite short moment, Kyu has met interesting friends slash rivals: Megu with her photographic memory, Kinta with his sharp eyesight and good luck, Kazuma the genius programmer, and Yutaka the 180-IQ university student. Can Kyu pass the tests?

“I’m going to become a detective.”

The introduction of our main detective for the whole series, Kyu, in my opinion, is more likeable than that of Shinichi Kudo from Detective Conan. The gap between their ages is not large with Kyu being the third-year middle school and they have the same sharp wits, yet I like Kyu better. For starters, he’s not cocky. You can tell that from his goofy smile and too-excited behavior and compare it with the insufferable ‘it-is-a-piece-of-cake’ attitude of the modern Sherlock Holmes aka Kudo. When Kyu solves a case, he invites others, and us the readers, to try to solve the case by giving us hints. Kudo does give others hints, but he doesn’t invite them to the same boat as he is to understand and solve the case. No. When he solves the case, he makes the crime scene a great stage and the others his captivated audience, and somehow, he gives the impression that he is the smartest one while others are the stupidest people in the world. Kyu, on the other hand, is quite modest. He acknowledges that the others are special in their own way and that he manages to solve the case with their help.

I know it’s not really fair to compare both characters like this, particularly if you never know Shinichi Kudo -- which is a bit impossible, I guess -- but what I want to say is sometimes you want to read a character that you can relate to, and while it will be hard to do with Kudo, as the author seems to make him too perfect for people in the real world to be able to relate to him, it will be easier to do with Kyu.

THE TRAGEDY OF KIRISAKI ISLAND

Despite a little accident with the dam and an old man -- who turns out to be THE Morihiko Dan himself --, causing him to get only 10 minutes to do the written second test, he manages to pass and be invited as one of the ten candidates to the final test, held in a worn building in a remote Kirisaki Island where there once a mysterious murder case related to Jack the Ripper. Dan himself discloses that those who manage to solve the case will be placed in the Qualified Class, a special class he creates for his potential successors, where he will teach everything he knows as detective before he retires. They have no idea that a candidate will fall victim to the perfect ‘reproduction’ of the tragedy from fifty years ago… After only solving small cases like the unusual flyer covering the window in the classroom and the missing money on his way to the test location and analyzing a murder case from photos in the first test, Kyu is now faced with --possibly-- his first actual murder case.

This is a dismemberment case, stay away if you can’t stomach the blood and gore.

I really like the setting of this case. A bunch of people is stuck in an isolated island, a run-down building, with no signal to contact outside world, and a violent storm. No matter how convincing the evidence to prove otherwise, it is really clear that in this kind of setting, the culprit is definitely one of the bunch. And that makes the story more interesting because they are placed in a situation where they must get suspicious of anyone around them, those they really know and those they barely know. Scary, isn't it? To think that someone close to you that you might know about is possibly a cold-hearted murderer?

MEET THE MAIN CHARACTERS

Kyu

“I’m going to become the number one detective in the world. I really think I was born to be a detective!”

Our detective-wanna-be, whose last name has not been revealed yet, dreams to be a detective like the one who saves him back then when he was a child. Though he’s not doing really good at school tests, he’s quite sharp to notice something that normally people do not notice. He’s a merry boy, but he can be pretty serious when he’s analyzing a case. He’s so confident taking the tests to the famous detective school despite there are many other candidates with amazing talents.

Megumi Minami

“Do you know what a photographic memory is? Anything I see or hear even for an instant will be engraved in my memory forever! I was born with this gift.”

A girl gifted with a photographic memory, the first another candidate Kyu meets. They quickly become acquainted with each other and decide to work together to pass the first test. I can’t imagine someone with her gift in real world. Always remember anything she see or hear? Wow. Even the smartest computer has limited storage room. And we know what happen to any device when the storage room is full. Isn’t her brain will be so full with every information stored whenever she is seeing and hearing things? How can she live with all of those memories?

Kintarou Tooyama

“Well, if lady luck wants me to be a detective, then she’ll show me the answer.”

A descendant of the famous Kinshirou Tooyama that runs the Kitamachi Magistrate, whoever and whatever it is. He is a tall young man who doesn’t look special at all, but he claims to have better eyesight than normal people. Given his perverted tendency, there’s no a wild guess of how he will use those sharp eyes. He’s also quite a lucky man.

Kazuma Narusawa

A fifth grade elementary school student that’s put out a bunch of hit games. He always wears a beanie and has his eyes stuck on his gadget.

Ryu Amakusa

A really pretty boy Kyu meets in the final test. He has calm and mysterious demeanor, and according to Morihiko Dan, he is the only candidate who gets a perfect score on the second exam.

Yutaka Saborumaru

A genius Tokyo university student who loves to remind himself and others of his IQ of 180 yet unable to prove that he is indeed worthy of such high IQ. In fact, he is the kind of individual that you will hate in the very first sight. He cannot accept that the others are better than him and always plots others’ demise.

Morihiko Dan

“If a detective gives up, the case will never be solved.”

The founder of Dan Detective School, he is the only person in Japan who can investigate and make arrests, having been given authority as a “Detective with Special Police License”. He’s confined to a wheelchair.

Shiro Katagiri

A beautiful assistant of Morihiko Dan.

Shintarou Maki

Another staff member participating in the final test with Katagiri.

Sakurako Yukihiro

Another female candidate. A high-schooler. Saborumaru seems to know her, but she ignores him completely. He is about to tell Kyu something about her before Katagiri shows up and scolds him for bad-mouthing others. She wants to be a mystery author.

Shishido Takeshi

Another candidate who is, judging from his age, maybe a university student. He’s quite prepared for the test, searching for the information of the island where they will have the final test.

Hayato Shiramine

Another candidate who is great with tricks, though he prefers them to be called magic.

Kyosuke Gooda

Another candidate who has been in puzzle contests across Japan with sweeping victories.

THE MORAL VALUES OF THE STORY

Stay humble no matter how special you are! Because no one will truly appreciate you if you keep boasting about your talent. Saborumaru is the perfect example of that!

I had been looking to read this series since I watched the series back in 2010. It's great that I'm doing it now, 7 years later, 'cause even if I do remember the general info of the cases and some of the culprits, I'm looking at a lot of them like it was the first time.
In this volume, we get a small intro to Kyu (Q), Megumi (Megu) and Kintarou (Kinta), how they met, and how they will decide to take the entrance exam for the DDS (Dan's Detective School).
I loved getting to know these characters again. 4.5 starts

A.K.A Detectif Academy Q
A.K.A Tantei Gakuen Q / 探偵学園 Q

**Baru baca sampai Vol 8, masih nyari edisi scanlation selanjutnya**

Gosh, I loved the anime series based on this manga so, so much when I was younger. Memories! :')

The story is about Kyu, a young boy who wants to become a detective. In this volume, he is seen appearing for an entrance exam to the most famous Detective Academy in Japan, Dan Detective School or DDS, the school that was founded by Dan Morihiko. While giving the exams, he meets Megumi, Kintarou, Kazuma, and Ryu and they are all going to solve mysteries together in the later volumes of the series.

I love the awkward and always happy Kyu, his happiness is truly infectious! I had such a crush on Ryu when I was a child (aagh) and I wish I had a photographic memory like Megu. I could have aced all my exams with that! I was also quite envious of Kazuma's intellect (he is a genius) and Kinta’s strength and perfect vision. Every evening, my brother and I would keep our books aside and watch the show and try to solve the cases ourselves. It was so much fun!

This volume ended on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read more. But I also have to study! What do I do?

I choose you, manga. :D
