Education has become a controversial topic among Christian parents. What many of us don't know, however, is that it doesn't have to be. In this book, Cliff McManis draws from a careful study of Scripture and his experience as an educator, parent, and pastor to help Christian parents navigate this difficult yet highly important topic. McManis not only discusses the biblical foundations for childhood education, he also examines the pros and cons of each schooling option (public, private, or homeschool) so that you can make a wise, biblically-informed decision about how to educate your child.
Great introduction to some if the education considerations of a Christian parent. The book doesn’t try to be an all inclusive guide for education of a child through his or her entire life, but it gives some important thought and research points.
One flaw in the book is that Pastor Cliff seems to assume the public schools are above C rankings, which is a problem for parents living in places like Mississippi or Georgia or any state with a low average for public education. I would have loved a hard line stance on how to handle that all to common scenario.
As with many things, Pastor Cliff argues you can’t just turn off the brain and let someone else make a decision for you. He gives a list of variables for consider and a Biblical framework for considering all of them. He also gives the suggestion of involving the church in your kids lives all along the way. With some many safeties and balances, you begin to understand that it’s not the school’s responsibility to save and nurture your child’s spirit. It’s yours! The good thing is so much is in our controls. We shouldn’t overstress over the factors that aren’t. Just stay diligent and involved.
