This book provides deep insight into what causes burnout and it's effects as well as providing practical steps on how to overcome it. I found a lot of value in the exercises through each chapter. They can be seen as tools you can go back to when you feel yourself slipping back into old habits.
I was not expecting this book to move to the top of my favorite books, but it has. I would give it 6 stars if I could.
Each chapter thoughtfully explores an aspect of not just burnout but wellness. I loved how the author gave insightful illustrations based on his own trekking around the world. And following each chapter are a list of habits you can practice to instill each element as you’re building a plan to create balance. His methods are not one-size fits all but acknowledge ways in which each person will have different goals and values, while still recognizing some elements of health can’t be ignored.
To top it off, Melo Calarco narrates the audiobook version. While I don’t always prefer this, his gentle, warm voice is the perfect match for the content, especially when he’s guiding you through a breathing exercise. If you need some balance in your life, get this book now! I can’t recommend it enough and I look forward to developing the habits shared within.
And if he should ever see this, I have to say: Thank you, Melo!
This audiobook was just what I needed to hear at the right time. It was reassuring to know that I wasn’t alone in what I was experiencing and that recovering from and preventing burnout can be achieved by introducing some simple practices. Many of the practices are familiar, but this was a gentle reminder of tools I’ve used before (and have forgotten) and of what I’m already capable of doing to self-regulate, set boundaries, and prioritize my self-care. It’s an easy listen and I appreciated the free worksheets and meditation downloads available on the author’s website.
I really useful guide to creating balance in your life particularly those high flyers who think work is the be all. Most of the strategies we are familiar with such as meditation, exercise, spending time with friends, etc. It's a good checkpoint though and the value in this book lies in its exercises and continued reference.
While I definitely only picked this up for lack of anything better to do during quiet time at work, I found it informative and helpful. I appreciated that the author included a number of personal anecdotes that really added to the appeal of the book, rather than making it feel more like a textbook. This was a pretty solid way to spend a few slow hours at work and I'm glad I picked it up.
Picked this up last year at Adobe Max and just got around to reading it. Really liked the thoughts and exercises and picked up some good things to keep in mind to focus on overall wellbeing.
Simple, practical, honest. If you listen to the audio, Melo’s lovely, warm, honest tone shines through sharing some things you can put into immediate practice.
