"The Shift" is a call to become more conscious, to move from aimless Ambition . . . to Meaning and purpose. Making this Shift is a necessity in order to live a peaceful, fulfilling life aligned with your Divine calling.
In this deeply engaging live seminar, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer explains that instead of heeding the demands of the ego, which keep you mired in self-sabotage through never-ending pleas and false promises, you can choose to move in a new direction—one that leaves the false self behind so you can reclaim your true nature.
The ego has driven many of us away from our authentic selves. In Making the Shift, Wayne reveals how we can make that all-important U-turn and head back to the Source of being that created us.
Wayne Walter Dyer was an American self-help author and a motivational speaker. Dyer earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Philosophy, a Master’s degree in Psychology and an Ed.D. in Guidance and Counseling at Wayne State University in 1970. Early in his career, he worked as a high school guidance counselor, and went on to run a successful private therapy practice. He became a popular professor of counselor education at St. John's University, where he was approached by a literary agent to put his ideas into book form. The result was his first book, Your Erroneous Zones (1976), one of the best-selling books of all time, with an estimated 100 million copies sold. This launched Dyer's career as a motivational speaker and self-help author, during which he published 20 more best-selling books and produced a number of popular specials for PBS. Influenced by thinkers such as Abraham H. Maslow and Albert Ellis, Dyer's early work focused on psychological themes such as motivation, self actualization and assertiveness. By the 1990s, the focus of his work had shifted to spirituality. Inspired by Swami Muktananda and New Thought, he promoted themes such as the "power of intention," collaborated with alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra on a number of projects, and was a frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
I remember when I made 'the shift'. I've made several in life and will continue to shift even further away from the ego. The further I shift from the ego, the more peace and happiness I find in life. My purpose becomes more and more clear. My desire to love and serve others becomes the driving force in my life, and the self becomes more selfless. The more detached from the material world I become, the more the material things of life I once pursued, begin to pursue ME instead, becoming tools in my hands to help others. Dyer's words are life-changing, though they are not his message as this message is as old as time, he puts them together in such a way that even the simplest mind can conceive them. Enjoy!
There are a few sparkling gems here and there but for a book about the lack of ego and possessions, the reader immediately learns quite a lot about how much money Dyer makes, the loveliness of his properties, his unsupportive brothers, the sacrifices his fans make to hear him speak, the amazing obstacles he has overcome, how well educated he is, how bold and self-sacrificing he is/was in service of his over-sized dharma.
Better writers and thinkers are not difficult to find.
All unhappiness is due to the ego. With it comes all your trouble. If you would deny the ego and scorch it by ignoring it you would be free . . . " - Ramana Maharshi
"Sell your cleverness and purchase bewilderment." - Rumi
"Thoroughly unprepared, we take the step into the afternoon of life; worse still, we take this step with the false assumption that our truths and ideals will serve us as hitherto. But we cannot live the afternoon of life according to the programme of life's morning; for what was great in the morning will be little at evening, and what in the morning was true will at evening have become a lie." - Carl Jung, The Stages of Life
"Should you shield the canyons from the windstorms, you would never see the beauty of their carvings." - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
"Dormant forces, faculties, and talents come alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be." - Patañjali
When you succeed in connecting your energy with the divine realm through high awareness and the practice of undiscriminating virtue, the transmission of the ultimate subtle truths will follow. - Lao-tzu
"The one possible way of giving meaning to [man's] existence is that of raising his natural relation to the world to a spiritual one." - Albert Schweitzer
Making the Shift is quite impactful and I'm very glad to have heard the message. I listened to an audio recording of a presentation that originated in Hawaii. Making the Shift is related to a number of books Dyer had written or was writing at the time including: Excuses Begone!, Wishes Fulfilled, The Shift. In addition to the books, Making the Shift is connected to Dyer's film, The Shift (which I haven't seen, but still am curious about, maybe I'll find a DVD someday).
The Four Cardinal Virtues That Constitute Our Original Nature: 1. Reverence for all life 2. Natural sincerity 3. Gentleness 4. Supportiveness
Favorite Passages from The Shift (book) which I followed along with as I listened to Dyer's presentation: If we are what we have, then when we don't have, we aren't! . . . . If we are what we do, then when don't or can't, we aren't. _______
The shift to Meaning eliminates our feelings of separateness, and illuminates our spiritual connectedness. _______
The U-turn is a shift from Ambition back to our place of origination to fulfill the promise of the afternoon and evening of our life. That promise is a life saturated with purpose. _______
Changing direction from a less-than-authentic existence to an authentic one doesn't mean that we're no longer able to attract abundance and prosperity, or that we lose our desire to be productive. It does mean that we feel the natural bliss of being tuned in to our wholeness. _______
Meaning and purpose have replaced any need for Ambition and control . . . _______
When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. _______
Essentially, the process of shifting to Meaning involves reconsidering our role in this magnificent, mysterious universe from a spiritual perspective. We recognize our longing for mor significance and purpose, and realize that ego isn't capable of fulfilling that yearning. Whether personally articulated or not, we cannot achieve authenticity from the false self, which is ego. _______
Purpose blossoms through the practice of radical humility; it isn't nurtured in thoughts of what we feel we're entitled to.
Wayne is a great speaker no doubt, but the content becomes quite repatative once you get to know the gist of it or if you have a solid background about spirituality and Enlightenment. Yet at most of the time during the talk/book I find him confusing people between God and the higher self, yet I completely don't blame him as he tries to promote how humans can become better in a society where it once refused the concept of a God and a Higher Power that sets their life for a destined journey.
Although this will not make my top selects, yet I would still recommend reading/Listening to the book.
Dyer is charismatic and shares nuggets of wisdom frequently but I felt some content was a bit long winded and went off track making it a tad tedious to finish the lectures. I think some of the messages may have been condensed to make the lectures more punchy. He has good anecdotes to keep the listener locked in but maybe for 2-3 hours, not 5.5 hours.
I read this book and sought out the DVD, "The Shift". I love them both. Wayne Dyer is one of my favorite Authors. If I haven't read all his books, I almost have. I love how real he is about his life.
Your only true divine purpose is to be here and now. It means, to live in meditation of love. Start living your life, doing everything in your life not for yourself, but for God, or the Universe, no matter what name you use: "The Universe ... God ... your Highest Being ... is sending you a message. "It's time." It's time for you to flip that switch in your life that will lead your worries, your stress, the fighting, and the striving to just disappear. It's time for you to make The Shift. Because when you do, it's not just something you're doing for yourself. It's something you're doing for those around you. It's something you're doing for your entire community. It's something you're doing for the world. For the Universe. For Creation itself."
To come closer to your original nature, give birth to wisdom and evoke the five blessings: health, wealth, happiness, longevity, and peace, turn to four Cardinal Virtues:
1. Reverence for all life which manifests as unconditional love and respect for oneself and all other beings; 2. natural sincerity; this manifests as honesty, simplicity, and faithfulness; 3. gentleness; this manifests as kindness, consideration for others, and sensitivity to spiritual truth; 4. supportiveness; this manifests as service to others without expectation of reward.
Dr. Dyer's noble goal is to reach the critical number of people who watched, heard or read his latest creation: "The Shift" and then, he believes, and I support him, we might as well turn the humanity to face its Higher Self and Shift to Love.
I highly recommend this audio program for quiet walks or even morning runs on a machine in your gym in order to remind yourself about the higher vibration that is always here and is always available for us to turn in to.

An inspiring live presentation from Dyer in Maui after he was diagnosed with lymphoma. He covers the basics of the Tao Te Ching and stories from Bruce Lipton, Carlos Castanada, David Hawkins, Neville Goddard, the Bible, and his own personal experiences to show how you can elevate yourself to a higher place by changing what you think about yourself. I listened to the audiobook from start to finish, took lots of notes, and will definitely play it again.
Love this book. I'll need to listen a few times. I'll have to share it with my husband as he often talks about Dao and the dao de jing as that is part of the World History he teaches. He would like this book as well.
This book gives me a message that I am hearing over and over this past year and will continue to work on and implement in my life
This was one of the earliest books of Wayne's that I ever listened to and I was hooked. As I'm sure many feel, it was as though it was written for me, in that moment, to answer questions I'd been asking for far too long. The film wasn't that great, but I absolutely love the interview with him that runs as an addition on the DVD. Inspiring and touching.
Always amazing words of wisdom... I could read and read his same books, and still feel that there are so much wisdom that i didn't get. Love this book. The movie with same name was also amazing. Recommend.
