Despite the show being well over two decades old, Wishbone holds a timeless appeal. While lots of popular media comes and goes, timeless stories, fun adventures, and cute doggies will always be popular with the general public. This Super Adventure book allows for more convoluted stories, and both tales bring the drama and fun that made the show a hit. Even if it's been a long time since you've watched PBS Kids, those who are young at heart like me will find plenty to enjoy about this book.
The story is adapted and illustrated beautifully. Wishbone is so cute in these drawings. I don't know what the reason, but I didn't enjoy this story as much as others I've read. I don't enjoy reading westerns and that's probably why.
When a fake news station tries to prove that Wanda Gilmore, doesn’t own the Oakdale Chronicles, evil bankers and evil gunslingers try to ruin Chaparosa, Texas, who’s there to stop it? Wishbone that’s who! In the story Dog Days of the West by Vivian Sathre, Wishbone helps Wanda and her friends prove to Fast-News 57 that she does own the Oakdale Chronicles. Wishbone also imagines himself as Long Bill, an old west dog in Chaparosa, Texas. When an evil banker known as J. Edgar Todd gets after him, he must find a way to get out of the situation! When a crazy gunslinger known as Calliope Catesby, shoots up the town, Wishbone must stop him. To me, if you like dogs, old times, and laughs, I would highly recommend this book! For example, in page 223, this is how they found their proof that Wanda does own the Oakdale Chronicle. “When Hank lifted up the desk, Joe pulled out the framed deed. Joe shoved a nearby book into its place. ‘Okay, you can let it down now.’ Hank set the corner of the desk on the book. Then he stared at the framed deed along with Joe. ‘This is it!’ Excitement filled Joe’s voice as he brushed dust and cobwebs from the frame with his hand. ‘I can’t believe you found it, Wishbone!’”. Another example on how they stop Calliope Catesby on page 175 is, “When Calliope was close enough, Long Bill pulled his end tight, while Tom pulled from the other end of the street. The rope sprang up. Calliope tripped and fell, nearly landing head-first in a pile of horse dung swarming with flies.” Overall, I recommend this book if you like action, dogs, old times, and laughs!
The kids always enjoy reading Wishbone as their bedtime book. They enjoyed it, and so did I. I’d recommend it for anyone who is nostalgic about Wishbone and/or likes the Wild West. As always, it’s a great way to get kids engaged with classic literature.
