Summary: This is a non-fiction text that talks about how different children get to school in different ways all over the world!
Evaluation: I gave this book 5 stars. I think that this book does a great job and making people think a little bit deeper than they were meaning to when picking up this book. Which is a good thing! I have never thought about how people get to school in other cultures, and it also shows me what some people go through just to get to school!
Teaching Idea: I would use this on one of the first few days of school, just to talk about how other people get to school and allow students to talk about how they get to school. I would definitely do this with a K-1 class. Or, for higher grades, I would turn this into a project for them where they would research these different cultures and how school works for them.
Nonfiction for early elementary students. This explores different methods of travel to school for children around the world. Great for community study units or any type of social studies. I was happy to see that it includes children from all over the globe!
This Is the Way We Go to School is different than I expected. From its cover I though the book would cover the subject from one culture or geographical area however it covers a diverse range of cultures. The book is about how children from all over the world travel to school. They travel by bicycle, foot, car, subway, Pedi cab, boat, donkey, horse, and snowmobile. I found this book interesting because this is a topic I really never thought about. I would have never thought that there are children in the world that wake up and ride a donkey to school or a snowmobile even. The illustrator chose to use real photos of children all over the world travelling to school. This to me brings the book to life and allows its readers to get a clear picture of what the author is trying to convey. This book is an easy reader and even has a glossary of words in the back with definitions. I recommend this book for primary readers.
This nonfiction book is about how children go to school all around the world! Some take a car, others take a bus, and some even take a horse or camel! This book is very multicultural and has a lot of neat pictures.
