Narc #3.5

Stopover

Rate this book
Downtime becomes an explosive excursion into an industrial hell-zone. With Scorpio shut down, Kevin Jarrat and Jerry Stone are on furlough, headed for a resort in Rethan's tropics. But when the clipper detours to the halfway station of Sheckley for repairs, the vacation dissolves into unexpected, unpredictable hazard. Stone is fascinated to see the 'gas can with lights' where Jarrat spent his youth, but the tour turns deadly when they run into Scorpio escapees who recognize Jarrat, and the NARC captains find themselves on a flight right into Hades. Cut off from the carrier, backup and weapons, they're surviving on their wits; furough looks like an impossible fantasy. A Pocket-size NARC page-turner, falling between SCORPIO and APHELION, from the award-winning author of Scorpio, Hellgate and Fortunes of War.

Mel Keegan

52 books71 followers
A self-confessed science fiction and fantasy devotee, Keegan is known for novels across a wide range of subjects, from the historical to the future action-adventure. Mel lives in South Australia with an eccentric family and a variety of pets.

Every Mel Keegan book is strong on gay or bisexual heroes (also, often, on gay villains), and some of these heroes are the most delicious in fiction: Jarrat and Stone from the NARC series, Bill Ryan and Jim Hale from The Deceivers, Neil Travers and Curtis Marin from Hellgate, and many more unforgettable characters. Because Mel's books feature the same sex relationships, the partnership at the core of each book is integral: this is the relationship driving the story, and it can be very powerful indeed.

Very short yet very enjoyable extra
I just love this series, good plot, action, memorable characters and sweet romance.
Jarrat and Stone are adorable, I really like how they developed throughout the books and still learning things about themselves, their relationship sounds genuine and that empathy connection is something I adore, it makes things interesting and fascinating.
Time now to read the other NARC books

SlashReaders: 'Stopover', was a nice brief little excursion into what happens when coincidences outside of work lead you to places you don't expect. Which then lead you right back to where you started, the job. This short novella gives us a glimpse into the pasts of both Jarrat and Stone in ways that haven't previous fit into the flow of the Narc books.

It's a fun adventure away from the structured world on the carrier--'Stopover' take's place in tandem with the DeathHead Characters--my only wish is that we might've gotten to stay a little bit longer. It would've been fun to have a bit of down time fluff. However, that is neither here nor there.

Almost but not quite 4 stars.

An unscheduled stopover on Sheckley, a place of Jarrat's childhood, takes the guys away from planned R&R and right back in action, picking up the loose ends from both Death's Head and Scorpion. Their luck is holding, but they feel the heat and begin to question their future. You can always count on Keegan to give you some good action, but here we get some glimpses in both Jarrat and Stone's pasts - something that rarely has place in the main novels.

It was enjoyable, but nothing new was really brought to the table. This was interesting, because both Kevin and Stoney work together undercover.
