[A powerful plea for revival and evangelism.]
Oswald Jeffrey Smith was a Canadian pastor, author, and missions advocate. He founded The People's Church in Toronto in 1928. He was a leading force in Fundamentalism in Canada.
A powerful book looking at the importance of evangelism and revival. Smith reviews Charles Finney's work and life as he pours out the topic. The beginning was a bit slow but the impact of the book in its entirety is huge and I highly recommend it to any Christ follower. The life of Charles Finney and Oswald J. Smith is a great encouragement in general and Smith gives the clear call, in this book, for the believer to search their heart and seek the Higher calling to lay everything on the line for God, in order to see the Salvation of souls.
Reading this book should stir your heart to devote time to prayer and desire to see revival. The recipe is simple: prayer, obedience to God in your life, passion, love for a lost world, faith that God can. 2 chronicles 7:14
A convicting read about having a passion for souls, and how the Holy Spirit works through us to bring about revivial. Many things keep Christians from serving God fully and if we are willing to find the things hindering God's work we will see a difference in the world.
First, this book took entirely too long for me to read. I covered the majority of it in the last month after determining that I needed to finish it. It is not hard to read, I just lacked the focus that I needed to read it.
Second, it seems to be a series of messages or lectures nicely made readable for a small book. My copy is 123 pages of text (small, in my estimation).
Third, there are many pets that I feel were very beneficial to my personal walk and focus on reaching the world around me. For that, I am glad that I read this book. I need to be reminded of our mission as Christ followers.
Finally, I feel that much of the end of the book and the focus on the work of the evangelist was merely results based, not necessarily scripture based. Some things mentioned will work for the church on an individual church basis. However, I never feel it is right to set aside doctrine and unite with the other churches/denominations in our town, even if it will “reach the lost!” What of those who are then dragged into a works based salvation religion? God has chosen His Church as the vehicle for reaching the lost, and not all “churches” are His Church.
A book that will certainly stir your heart to do more for the cause of world missions. Oswald J. Smith was a man that had a passion for soul winning, missions, and for revival. Excellent book from a mission-minded man a couple generations ago. Several great quotes & illustration are found in it's pages - be sure to have a pen handy.
