Pikachu and his Pokâemon friends first go on vacation to a Pokâemon-only island--which is not as restful as it should be--and then go exploring underground after they accidentally fall through a hole.
Though I got into Pokémon during the summer of 1999, I didn't see Pikachu's Vacation until the first "pocket monster" flick came out on video; even then, though I saw the entire short film, I didn't get to see much of Mewtwo Strikes Back because, just as it was starting, my friend's mother came to pick him up, and it was his video. It wasn't until well after the second film came out that I saw the first one in its entirety.
When I did see the second one, though I enjoyed The Power of One, I didn't care for the short film that came before it. Someone I saw it with said, "What is the whole point of this movie?" Even though I knew it wasn't the actual flick, I agreed; I couldn't wait for it to be over, because I couldn't make sense of the story.
When I bought this a few months ago at a garage sale, I didn't know it was an adaptation of those two shorts. Still, I read it, and I enjoyed it. I wish the manga version of the first one had been truer to the original; this lacked the Pokédex narration, which made it more fun. On the other hand, the narration given in the second part made it more tolerable than the short on which it was based. So, this was a mixed bag.
Okay, so i didn't read this for myself.... my seven year old has only begun to show an interest in words because of Pokemon and Dr Suess and since we have read all of Dr Suess. He has begun checking them out from his school's library. Some have been really hard to read, while others like this one are comic book style, which is fun. There weren't a whole lot of sentences in the two stories in this book. The comic strip's had sounds and all over them, so instead of reading words i mostly was making weird noises, like PIKA, WAAA, KABOOOOM. My son really liked it but since this is MY goodreads i could only give it two stars :) :) :) :)
It wasn't necessarily bad. I guess the low rating is because I've seen the Pikachu's Vacation anime, and it was much better. The narrator said more in the anime than what was written. And as for Pikachu's Rescue Team, since I haven't seen the anime version, I actually enjoyed it. The pictures were great. Very colorful, and it was like watching the anime.
This showcased the first 2 Pikachu mini-movies that showed before the first 2 Pokemon movies. And, since it's an Ani-Manga, it was in glorious full color. Very fast paced and fun. I loved it.
