One of the key questions the Protestant Reformation asked and answered was: how does a person get right with God? In approaching this question, the Reformers set out to rediscover and establish the bounds of essential Christianity through five declarations: sola Scriptura (Scripture alone), sola gratia (grace alone), sola fide (faith alone), solus Christus (Christ alone),and sola Deo gloria (the glory of God alone). Nate Pickowicz’s guide will help us understand not only the Reformation, but the Christian faith itself.
Nate Pickowicz (B.A., Muhlenberg College, M.A., Trinity Theological Seminary) is the pastor/planter of Harvest Bible Church in Gilmanton Iron Works, New Hampshire. He also writes for EntreatingFavor.com and Servantsofgrace.org. He and his wife, Jessica, have two children.
A clear and succinct presentation of the five solas and their Scriptural foundations. One of Pickowicz's gifts is writing clearly and succinctly (but without sacrificing deep and important theological truths). I appreciate this about this book.
For someone very familiar with the protestant Reformation, there is not much new in this book. It was certainly encouraging. But this book is truly designed for those who do not know anything, or very little, about the Protestant Reformation. I would not hesitate to hand this book to a friend, or anyone who has questions about faith in general. It is a great clear description with an evangelistic heart.
This was written with such clarity! Pickowicz has created a wonderful summary of the Reformation with an engaging voice that keeps you turning the pages. It would be good for all Bible-believing Christians, but even more so for those wanting:
> a better understanding of the five solas
> to defend against Roman Catholicism
> to be reminded of the Light in this dark world
The book’s main question it answers is, “How does a person get right with God” and I’m here to say that it is answered very well. The writer’s kindness and burden for the lost shine throughout.
A great bibliography gives the reader suggestions for further reading, and this new edition has three appendices added:
1. The Priesthood of All Believers 2. Theology of the Cross 3. Simul Justus et Peccator
Excellent book that gives a description of why the Protestants protest the Catholic Church. It clearly goes through what aspects of Catholic doctrine contradict Scripture. It is organized by the Solas which is a very strong way to describe the debate and structure today's arguments for protestantism. Highly, highly recommend. It is academic without being heady.
