Belinda Alexandra has been published to wide acclaim in Australia and internationally. She is the daughter of a Russian mother and an Australian father and has been an intrepid traveller since her youth. Her love of other cultures is matched by her passion for her home country, Australia, where she is a volunteer carer for the NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES).
Belinda is also an ambassador for the World League for the Protection of Animals (Australia) and lives in Sydney with a menagerie of adored pets.

Το Ρόδο της Τοσκάνης ξεκινάει υπέροχα και για 100 σελίδες ήμουν σίγουρη ότι θα γίνει ένα από τα πιο αγαπημένα μου βιβλία. Στην πορεία εντελώς ξαφνικά η πλοκή αλλάζει και η ιστορία γίνεται μελοδραματική. Το θέμα είναι ότι μισώ εντελώς και απόλυτα τα μελοδράματα. Όταν η ιστορία ξεφεύγει και πάλι από τα μελό, απλώς γίνεται βαρετή… Για πολλές σελίδες… Και το άτιμο βιβλίο έχει πολλές σελίδες. Ο λόγος που δεν το παράτησα είναι ότι κατά την διάρκεια της βαρεμάρας και της ξανθοπουλίασης -που ξαναερχόταν στη ζωή της ηρωίδας είτε με την μορφή ενός τραγικού έρωτα, είτε του πολέμου, είτε ενός βιασμού, του παιδιού που δεν μπορούσε να μεγαλώσει μπλα μπλα μπλα (κ ωιμέ αδικία, αδικία, αδικία)- το βιβλίο είχε αναζωογονητικές σπίθες που γινόταν πραγματικά ενδιαφέρον και ωραίο. Αλλά μέχρι εκεί. Θεωρώ ότι αυτή η ιστορία άμα έπαιρνε λιγότερες σελίδες να ειπωθεί κ δεν τραβούσε τόσο τα του πολέμου -που δεν τον παρουσίασε με κανένα ενδιαφέρον- ή εκείνη την μεγάλη κοιλιά που έκανε, όταν η ηρωίδα δούλευε σε έναν θίασο, και δεν τραβούσε κάποια σημεία τόσο από τα μαλλιά, θα ήταν καταπληκτικό.

This novel had a subtitle ‘Passion, longing, secrets, and a dangerous time’ and is set in wartime Italy so it sounded just like my kind of book. Yet, despite its readability, I have to admit I was disappointed. I’m not sure exactly why. I should’ve loved sensitive Rosa, and I really adore romantic books set in wartime Italy ... yet ... I think it was too long, or the writing was simply too pedestrian, or because I never got to really like either of the two men Rosa falls in love with ... too much telling, not enough showing ... gorgeous cover, though!

I WON'T spoil it for you!
Just as expected, the novel is a wonderful creation of the devastating time the Italians spent during the time Mussolini ruled. I got very attached to all the characters, good and evil. The flow is smooth and rich and filled with all emotions, suspense, mystery, love, heartbreak, loss, darkness, as well as hope and new beginnings.
I will definitely search and learn more about Mussolini and his ruling as well as the tragic events based on reality mentioned in the novel. What's best about Alexandra other than her exquisite narration, is that her story is based on research and facts. So expect to be reading a political novel at its best.

Τα ρομαντικά, ιστορικά μυθιστορήματα, φαίνεται να βρίσκονται στα πάνω τους τα τελευταία χρόνια. Το ελληνικό αναγνωστικό κοινό λατρεύει να διαβάζει ιστορίες που το ταξιδεύει σε άλλους τόπους και άλλες εποχές, πόσο μάλλον όταν αυτό συνδυάζεται με μυριάδες δεινά για τους κεντρικούς ήρωες, και δυνατά συναισθήματα αγάπης και γιατί όχι, εκδίκησης. "Το ρόδο της Τοσκάνης" της Belinda Alexandra, που κυκλοφόρησε στη χώρα μας από τις εκδόσεις Διόπτρα, είναι ένα τέτοιο βιβλίο και παρά τις όποιες αδυναμίες του, φαίνεται πως έχει πετύχει τον στόχο του, με το κοινό να το αγκαλιάζει με ιδιαίτερη θέρμη. Προσωπικά, θεωρώ πως ως ιστορία έχει πολύ γερές βάσεις, αλλά αν είχε αποφύγει να είναι τόσο φλύαρο στα σημεία, θα μπορούσε να είναι επικό.

Η Ρόζα εγκαταλείπεται όντας βρέφος στα χέρια των μοναχών του Σάντο Σπίριτο. Αυτές θα γίνουν η οικογένειά της και θα βρίσκονται συνεχώς δίπλα της, μέχρι που εκείνη θα κλείσει τα δεκαπέντε της χρόνια και θα φύγει από το μοναστήρι προκειμένου να αναζητήσει την τύχη της και να φτιάξει μια νέα ζωή. Ο δρόμος της θα την οδηγήσει στο σπίτι μιας πλούσιας, αριστοκρατικής οικογένειας, όπου θα αναλάβει τον ρόλο της γκουβερνάντας, έχοντας να αντιμετωπίσει όχι μόνο μια σκληρή αφεντικίνα, αλλά και την επιθυμία της να ανακαλύψει τι βρίσκεται στην πραγματικότητα πίσω από την μυστηριώδη κατάρα που φαίνεται να βαραίνει το αρχοντικό. Την ίδια στιγμή, η Ιταλία παύει να είναι ένα ασφαλές και ήσυχο μέρος, αφού ο φασισμός και όσα φέρει μαζί του, πέφτει σαν μάστιγα στη χώρα, με τη Ρόζα να αντιμετωπίζει πολύ δύσκολες καταστάσεις από τις οποίες, για να γλιτώσει, πρέπει να επιστρατεύσει όλη της την ευφυΐα αλλά και την επιθυμία της να ζήσει.

Το βιβλίο της Belinda Alexandra, επί της ουσίας, χωρίζεται σε δύο μέρη, αν και κάποιος θα μπορούσε να ισχυριστεί πως χωρίζεται σε τρία. Κατά το πρώτο μισό του βιβλίου, η ανάγνωση αποδεικνύεται μια συγκλονιστική, ταξιδιάρικη εμπειρία, που σε παρασύρει και σε καθηλώνει, καθιστώντας αδύνατο το να αφήσεις το βιβλίο από τα χέρια σου. Κατά το δεύτερο μισό, όμως, τα συναισθήματα αυτά μειώνονται αισθητά, παρά που η δράση είναι -θεωρητικά- πολύ πιο έντονη και οι εξελίξεις πολύ πιο καταιγιστικές. Ξέρω πως αυτό μπορεί να ακούγεται οξύμωρο, και ίσως και να είναι, όμως στην προσπάθειά της, η συγγραφέας, να μας προσφέρει ένα βιβλίο πλούσιο σε γεγονότα και στιγμές γεμάτες δυναμική, καταφέρνει να υπερφορτώσει το κείμενό της σε σημείο που να σε πνίγει ορισμένες στιγμές. Στην προσπάθειά της να εντυπωσιάσει, καταφέρνει να κουράσει, μέχρι τη στιγμή εκείνη, τουλάχιστον, όπου η πορεία των γεγονότων αρχίζει να ανακάμπτει και η ισορροπία επανέρχεται.

Για να αποφύγω να δημιουργήσω λάθος εντυπώσεις, θέλω να ξεκαθαρίσω πως παρά τα όσα ειπώθηκαν παραπάνω, οφείλουμε να αναγνωρίσουμε στη συγγραφέα πως ο τρόπος με τον οποίο περιγράφει και μεταφέρει εικόνες είναι μοναδικός. Παραστατικός, ζωντανός, ρεαλιστικός, ζωντανεύει χρώματα κι αρώματα και μας μεταφέρει εκεί που θέλει η καρδιά της. Παράλληλα, το ιστορικό υπόβαθρο του βιβλίου είναι ιδιαίτερα καλοδουλεμένο και φαίνεται πως η ίδια έχει κάνει μεγάλη έρευνα σε σχέση με τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, ειδικά για τις επιπτώσεις που αυτός είχε στην Ιταλία, αλλά χωρίς οι αναφορές της να περιορίζονται μονάχα εκεί. Και όσο η ιστορία πλησιάζει προς το τέλος της, τόσο η ένταση και η αγωνία κορυφώνονται, και λαχταράς να ανακαλύψεις ποιο θα είναι το τέλος της και αν, τελικά, θα έρθει η λύτρωση και η δικαίωση.

Συνολικά, "Το ρόδο της Τοσκάνης" είναι ένα καλογραμμένο, ρομαντικό, ταξιδιάρικο βιβλίο, που έχει όμως και τις πολύ σκληρές στιγμές του που σχετίζονται όχι μόνο με το Ιταλικό έθνος, αλλά και με την ίδια τη Ρόζα και τα όσα δεινά την βρήκαν στη ζωή της και παρ' όλα ταύτα, αντί να παραιτηθεί, είχε το θάρρος και τη δύναμη να συνεχίσει αναζητώντας το ευτυχισμένο τέλος της, μια ζωή που θα της χάριζε πίσω ένα μέρος των όσων έχασε στην πορεία της ζωής της. Μια ιστορία που παρά τις όποιες φλυαρίες και περιττολογίες της, αφού το βιβλίο θα μπορούσε να είναι αρκετά πιο μαζεμένο και κατά συνέπεια πιο ξεκούραστο διατηρώντας συνεχώς το ενδιαφέρον μας ακμαίο, δίνει σπουδαία μαθήματα ζωής και αγάπης. Μια ιστορία που μιλάει για την ειρήνη και τη δύναμή της, αλλά και τις ευκαιρίες που σου δίνει η ζωή ακόμα και όταν όλα μοιάζουν χαμένα, αρκεί να έχει την θέληση να τις αρπάξεις και να τις αξιοποιήσεις.

Why is this book written on a third-grade reading level? Seriously, it's as if the author assumes that I can handle the image of a guy's eyeball hanging down on his cheek, but I can't handle sentences longer than ten words. She kept adding in questions like "Would the war ever be over?" and "How could things ever be the same?" as if she had to hold my hand through the basics of conflict and theme. I read mostly young adult fiction and this is by far the most talked-down-to that I have felt in a long time.

Though it dragged on painfully through the middle of the book, I think the story overall was pretty good, and I probably would have given it three stars if it hadn't been for this:

But she had come to the conclusion that while most Italians - and probably many Germans - had not wanted war, they had chosen a path of greed and pride and the result had been war. For where else did violence begin but within each individual human heart? It started with violence of thought and action, jealousy of others and loathing of oneself. It had its beginnings in the daily choices one made, including the indifference toward the suffering of animals in what one selected to eat and wear . . .

Not only is this another example of the author's heavy-handed attempts at theme, but it seems like she is actually blaming me for perpetuating war because I'm a meat-eater. WHAT? I'm about the biggest pacifist there is. I don't eat meat because I'm indifferent to the suffering of others, but because EVOLUTION TOLD ME TO. You know who else eats meat? Animals. Are they also responsible for war?

I feel like I accomplished something when I finished this book - not because it was intellectually challenging, but because I wanted to quit for so much of it. I understand that most people disagree with me and found a lot to love about this book, but I feel like I need to head back to YA lit where the authors don't talk at me like I'm a child for 600 pages.

Ήταν καλό... αλλά δεν ήταν συγκλονιστικό...

Καταρχάς είχε πάρα πολλές λεπτομέρειες που στην αρχή το θεώρησα θετικό διότι με βοήθησε να φτιάξω τις εικόνες πιο καθαρά. Μετά όμως έγινε κουραστικό. Ένα ακόμα που με προβλημάτισε ήταν ότι τα πραγματικά γεγονότα που εξιστορούσε ή τουλάχιστον προσπάθησε να εξιστορήσει ήταν "στεγνά". Τι εννοώ με τον όρο "στεγνά", ένιωθα ότι ναι μεν τα έβαλε για να μας κάνει να καταλάβουμε την φρίκη του πολέμου αλλά το έκανε με τέτοιο τρόπο που δεν ένιωθα ότι ήταν μέρος της ιστορίας. Λες και έπαιρνε τα κομμάτια και τα τοποθετούσε, λες και διάβαζες και λίγο Ιστορία.
Με αυτό το τρόπο ένιωσα ότι χανόταν η σύνδεση με την μυθοπλασία.

Wow, this was just wow. I have a dislike of books set in war time but this book was a little different, as it focused on Mussolini rather than Hitler (which I'm so sick of hearing about, it’s as if the authors really know what Hitler did or didn’t do. Enough already!) and the Italian Fascist Party.

Fascinating, heartbreaking, gruesome, powerful.

Belinda Alexandra has a way of transporting you back in time to the period her stories are set in. Tuscan Rose was very well researched and kept my attention the whole way through. I couldn't put the book down and was itching to finish it. Now I will need to wait another two years until her next book is published. I would highly recommend this book as well as her other three novels to anyone who hasn't read her.

Πολύ χαριστικά αυτό το δυόμιση. Ίσως για τον κόπο που έκανες συγγραφέας να το γράψει. Κακό κακό κακό και κακό. Γεμάτο κλείσε στερεότυπα αλλά ταυτόχρονα γεμάτο ασύγχρονη S. Δεν υπάρχει πιο σπαστικό πράγμα από το να θέτεις στο κέντρο του βιβλίου εποχής πράγματα της εποχής μας προβληματισμούς και θέματα της εποχής μας. Συνεχόμενη παράθεση γεγονότων και σχεδόν γνώση της λύσης του μυστηρίου απ’ την αρχή. Μια κακή σαπουνόπερα πασπαλισμένη με ιστορία

After reading a few pages I knew this book was going to be good but when I got to the part where Rosa saw salami slices turning into sows, vomited up live live anchovies, squids and chickens I started to worry. Thankfully, Rosa's "gifts" were played down in the rest of the novel and it continued to be an exciting, page turning book.

I picked this wonderful book up in a charity shop for 45 pence. What a find. The minimum I can do in exchange for the hours of pleasure I derived from reading “Tuscan Rose” is write a review for Belinda Alexandra.
In 638 pages, she manages to cover a vast and complex period covering two difficult, horrific world wars, fascism and the cruelty and atrocities of war and use it all magnificently as the background for a beautiful love story.
I live and write in Tuscany, so the title and cover caught my eye. And many of the events detailed in the story were not new to me. All the research she has done comes through beautifully in the narrative. The story flows; it’s moving, poignant; the characters are completely convincing, and the descriptions are beautiful.
I love her underlying message about war. Early on, we hear Luciano - one of the main protagonists - say: “It’s everyone thinking about themselves that has brought about the downfall of Italy…” and towards the end of the story, Rosa, the heroine, talks to two German prisoners. It is the end of the war and they want to know why they weren’t shot. Rosa has come to the conclusion that there has been too much violence and it has to stop: “For where else did violence begin but within each individual heart? It started with violence of thought and action, jealousy of others and loathing of oneself. It had its beginnings in the daily choices one made, including the indifference towards the suffering of animals in what one selected to eat and wear, and towards the poor and oppressed.” In her author’s note, Alexandra writes to her readers: “I [also] hope that you will take away with you and share the core message of the novel – that peace on a world scale is determined by each of us creating peace in our own hearts and minds first…”
There is an element of fantasy and spiritualism to the story, which I at first found hard to be comfortable with. Rosa has psychic powers, which I won’t describe, as it would spoil enjoyment of the book. But even this seemed “normal” after a while and added to the rich layers. I am recommending this to all my friends who love Italy and looking up more work by this masterful author (or should I say “mistressful”?? in view of the book’s feminist elements). Thank you for the hours of delight, Belinda Alexandra.

Η Ρόζα είναι ένα ορφανό που μεγαλώνει στον μοναστήρι του Σάντο Σπίριτο στη Φλωρεντία, μέχρι τη στιγμή που αναλαμβάνει γκουβερνάντα ενός κοριτσιού στη βίλα Σκαρφιότι. Η ατμόσφαιρα στη βίλα είναι πολύ διαφορετική και περίεργη και η Ρόζα το αντιλαμβάνεται από την πρώτη στιγμή που πατάει το πόδι της εκεί. Λόγω ενός περιστατικού, η Ρόζα αναγκάζεται να απομακρυνθεί από τη βίλα με τον χειρότερο τρόπο. Η ζωή της δεν θα είναι ποτέ πια η ίδια και η πολιτική κατάσταση της χώρας βοηθάει πολύ σε αυτό. Όταν έρθει ο πόλεμος, η Ρόζα θα ζήσει περιστατικά που δεν περίμενε ποτέ πως θα αναγκαστεί να ζήσει. Θα αποχωριστεί τα παιδιά της για τη δική τους ασφάλεια, αλλά θα χωριστεί και από τον άντρα της. Η Ρόζα όμως δεν θα χάσει το κουράγιο της αλλά θα βρει ακόμα περισσότερο για να βοηθήσει αυτούς που έχουν ανάγκη. Η Ιταλία στα χρόνια πριν και κατά τη διάρκεια του 2ου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Από χώρα κατακτητή σε χώρα κατακτημένη.

Μετά "Το Ρόδο της Τοσκάνης" όπου βλέπω Belinda Alexandra τρέχω σαν τρελή!!! Τόσο καλό που δεν το πίστευα, ότι βρήκα επιτέλους ένα βιβλιο να μου αρέσει τόσο πολύ μετά από καιρό!!!

Una historia sobre Segunda Guerra Mundial, desde el punto de vista de los italianos.
Se deja leer y el tema histórico es bueno e interesante por la forma en que los partisanos accionaban; sin embargo el tema del romance me sobró.
Eso si, al ser una lectura conjunta, disfruté mucho los comentarios sobre ciertos aspectos de la novela que eran difíciles de creer

'I shall gain mastery over my heart'

Signorina Rosa Bellocchi was taken to the convent Santo Spirito as an infant, with a key as the only clue to her identity.

We meet Rosa as a young 15 year old that is about to be sent to the Scarfiotti Villa to be the governess of the Marsche and Marschea's young daughter Clementina. While the Marsche appears to be kind-hearted his wife is a frightning women with a black mysterious shadow that surrounds her.


Okay the GOOD and the BAD..

The BAD..
*Knowing how old Rosa was was really hard! The time was either slow, fast or in between. At the end of the book I only had a vague idea of how old she was (30 I guessed by the way).

(That's all the bad points!)

*Everything in the end connects/No loose ends
*Loved the characters and the time period

Από την αρχή της κυκλοφορίας του οι γνώμες τελείως διαφορετικές ..Το ξεκίνησα με επιφύλαξη μετά την λευκή γαρδένια η οποία δεν μου άφησε τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις.Ένα ρομαντικό ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα που υπόσχεται πολλά. Κινηματογραφικό και ατμοσφαιρικό σε μεταφέρει με απόλυτη επιτυχία στη γραφική Τοσκάνη στην περίοδο του Β΄παγκοσμίου πολέμου ταυτίζεσαι με τους ήρωες και πορεύεσαι μαζί τους στις καλές και στις δύσκολες στιγμές τους. Ένα ανάγνωσμα που δε του λείπει το μυστήριο η αγωνία οι έρωτες και φυσικά οι μεγάλες ανατροπές .Κάποιες στιγμές συγκινητικό αλλά και κάποιες πολύ ρεαλιστικό.Θα προτιμούσα σίγουρα κάποιες λιγότερες σελίδες στα ιστορικά και πολιτικά γεγονότα, αυτό όμως σίγουρα δε το κατατάσσει στα αδιάφορα βιβλία που βρίσκονται μπροστά μου ανά καιρούς..

Πολύ ωραία γραμμένο με γλαφυρές περιγραφές, σε τοποθετεί αμέσως στο κλίμα της εποχής και σε κάνει να βαδίζεις βήμα βήμα με την ηρωίδα σε όλες της αντιξοότητες της ζωής της στην φασιστική Ιταλία με αποκορύφωμα την κατάληψη της Ιταλίας από το��ς Ναζί κατά τον ΒΠΠ. Συνειδητοποιείς για ακόμα μια φορά σε τι ακρότητες μπορεί να φτάσει ο άνθρωπος και πόσο πολύτιμο αγαθό ειναι η Ειρήνη. Του κόβω ενα αστεράκι γιατι λόγω του μεγάλου του όγκου έκανε σε κάποια σημεία λίγο κοιλιά. Αλλά λίγο, όχι πολύ ώστε να βαριέσαι...Παρά τις μέτριες και κακές κριτικές που με έκαναν διστακτική εμένα μου άρεσε και το συστήνω στους λάτρεις του ιστορικού μυθιστορήματος.

I honestly expected to get something differently from Tuscan Rose. From the book’s blurb I was expecting the paranormal element that was mentioned to take a more significant part into the book’s story. Even though that wasn’t the case, the story that I did get was compelling on its own and made the book very moving and powerful. I enjoy books with a strong and passionate leading lady and Tuscan Rose delivered on that aspect with Rosa.

As a lover of historical fiction, I’m always looking for books that manage to tell an engaging story while being able to recreate a certain time period in a way that brings it to life and makes it as much a part of the book as the characters themselves. Belinda Alexandra did a great job of portraying what life was like back in early 20th century Italy amidst the rule of Mussolini and the Fascist Party. I liked how as you progressed through the book the sense of danger and tension of the times is always present and strengthens until it reaches its culmination in WWII. Alexandra powerfully illustrated how the people of Italy were affected by the oppression and how there were brave men and women willing to stand up and fight for Italy’s freedom. She didn’t shy away from portraying the gruesome atrocities that occurred during this time. It helped you understand more fully why these men and women sacrificed so much and risked their lives to fight back. Alongside this conflict, she also showed the mindset of the times regarding unwed and pregnant women. All these details exhibited how much time and effort Alexandra put into her research for the book and the creativity she used to blend both the fictional and nonfictional aspects of the story.

The setting of this book was important not only to serve as the setting for the story, but it also provided the catalyst for the changes that the book’s heroine, Rosa, undergoes. It influenced her growth from the cloistered orphan from the convent to a freedom fighter with a husband and children. It’s all these conflicts that Rosa had to endure that made her one of the strongest female leads that I’ve read. She is a beautiful combination of strength, faith, and vulnerability. You come to not only sympathize with her but admire her courage and fortitude to fight for those she loves. So by the end of the book, just as Rosa, you are left feeling hopeful optimism because you have gone through so much with her.

I felt the book didn’t need to have its semi-paranormal storyline. I thought it was out of place and considering how little time was spent focusing on it, the book could’ve just as well taken it out. For the majority of the book, I didn’t even think about Rosa’s gift or the presence at Villa Scarfiotti. The book’s beginning just had a different feel to it from the rest of the book. It actually seemed like the start of another book. The story really came together once Rosa left the villa and went on her journey.

This book was a great combination of love story, drama, and action to make it a compelling read about survival and fighting for freedom. Rosa was not what you would picture when you think of survivor and fighter, but she is just that. This book takes you on such a powerful journey that you can’t help but feel such emotions as anger, disbelief, sympathy, and hope. This was a beautifully written book and I would look forward to any future works from Alexandra.

It was as if she was flipping over the pages of the past.

I was fortunate to receive an uncorrected proof of this novel as part of the Goodreads First Reads program. I entered the giveaway on something of a whim, not expecting to win, as is oft the case. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a copy and even moreso by the joy&ardor of reading this tale.

It reminded me somewhat of The Red Horse, which I know of only by reputation, though the two books are as different as can be.

Halfway through this book I realized that a friend of mine in real life had spoken highly of Alexandra and I can see why. She has crafted a gripping plot with the wholly sympathetic character of Rosa who is imbued with a certain gift of insight: the ability to see The Source in a thing: mostly antiques but also food.

This gift compelled Rosa to eschew the eating of flesh. At times the narrative became didactic in arguing against Eating animals but this is done so as to make the story relevant to life today. & even though this was a minor note to the book, this was the part which I struggled with the most, as an omnivore (insert Michael Pollan linkref) because I personally choose to justify my carnivorous ways with a variety of flim flam. A week after finishing the book I find that I appreciate this side-project of the book more because it forced me to question my ways. But another part of me wants to be combative and cite the lifeforce of plants and microbes, and ask what makes those any different from animals. I suppose the question boils down to one of agency.

An alternate critique would be that Alexandra's prose is at times painfully pedestrian (to the point of the oh really? level of declarative statements) despite such glimpses of poetical beauty as quoted in the lede for this review. But that is done in service of the motion of the plot & whether such stylistic concerns take precedent over the above-mentioned didacticism in the name of interspecies ethics is entirely dependent upon the reader's mode&mood. I accepted both (well, I did skip/skim one chapter because I wanted to see what would happen next right away) as this is a story of acceptance&awareness and a love letter to resistance and pacifism.

Another choice excerpt: Violence of even the most innocuous kind begat more violence.

Chances are you know this story already, in general: Italy went fascist and sided with Germany in the second world war. It is the particulars of Rosa's life that make this book memorable: the mysteries of her source: she was raised by cloistered nuns, as an orphan.

I read this book in two days and am keeping pieces of it in mind for further cogitation.

The vaudevillian send-up of Mussolini is priceless.

Read this book if you are ever passing through and need something to pass the time quickly.

Όταν ένα βιβλίο σε καθηλώνει από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος για μένα είναι επιτυχία. Η υπόθεση του λογοτεχνικού αυτού έργου, παρουσιάζει εξαρχής πάρα πολύ ενδιαφέρον με πολύ ωραία ανάλυση της ψυχολογίας των "θυτών" και των "θυμάτων"!!! Βοηθά στην αυτογνωσία !! ένας ύμνος για τους ανθρώπους που ζουν γι αυτούς που αγαπούν και έχουν δύναμη να συγχωρούν... πραγματικά ένας ύμνος για τη γυναίκα . Για όλες αυτές τις γυναίκες που ρίχνουν την ψυχή και το σώμα τους σε έναν ατέρμονο αγώνα να κάνουν κατορθωτό το αξεπέραστο. δεν θέλω να σταθώ ιδιαίτερα σε υπόθεση του βιβλίου από φόβο μην αποκαλύψω περισσότερα απ' όσα χρειάζονται ... η ιστορία του βρίθει από ανατροπές και εξελίξεις. Βασικό ρόλο στην ζωή των ηρώων παίζει η μοίρα, που σκαρώνει παιχνίδια για να διασκεδάζει την ανία της... Ένας κυκεώνας συγκυριών, ραδιουργιών, ψεμάτων και αχαλίνωτου μίσους... Χαρακτηριστικά που υπογραμμίζουν την απόλαυση της ανάγνωσής του βιβλίου !! θαύμασα το ταλέντο της συγγραφέως να ζωντανεύει εικόνες μίας άλλης εποχής και να σε κάνει μέρος του σκηνικού της ανεβοκατέβαζοντας την ένταση κατά βούληση, δίνοντας μας πληροφορίες για το παρελθόν δένοντάς το με το παρόν , ξετυλίγει τους χαρακτήρες της σκιαγραφώντας παράλληλα τα πάθη τους, πάθη αναγνωρίσιμα σε όλους μας, αναλύοντας πειστικά τα κίνητρα των σφαλμάτων τους και οδηγώντας τους στην κάθαρση…

Ένα μυθιστόρημα που προτείνεται ανεπιφύλακτα και ενδείκνυται για πολλές αναγνώσεις. Συγχαρητήρια !!

This would have been better had the two storylines been separated into two separate books. The mystery of Rosa's birth and parentage seems to be overshadowed by her life story throughout an era of fascism and war. By separating the stories, Belinda could have developed the mystery of who Rosa was in much more detail. It's exciting and clever when authors are able to take more than one storyline and entwine them into one seamless story, however, this was not the case here.

It was an interesting story to read,well written and easy to read, however, by 3/4 of the way through the book I was ready for it to finish. It was just simply too long. And that could have been solved by taking out the minor storyline and just focusing on Rosa's life story.

I normally don't read novels that are war based but that one was different.
The storyline opens with an unknown baby being dropped at a convent. The story unfolds as she matures into a young adolescent and leaves the convent to work as a governess for a wealthy family. She experiences horror, fear, loss and love over the next few years to finally triumph over her enemy. The plot twists and turns and keeps the reader on edge. It is the type of book you can't put down, you really can't wait to get back to the story after cooking or feeding the babies as in my case

Το ροδο της Τοσκάνης.

Το βιβλίο ήθελα πολύ να το διαβάσω αλλά δε γνώριζα ότι ήταν ιστορικό.

Ξεκινάει πολύ δυναμικά.
Σε μια δύσκολη εποχή για ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα γεννιέται το Ροδο της Τοσκάνης.

Στην αρχή μου άρεσε πολύ όλη αυτή η ομορφιά με κοντεσες, ίντριγκες και χαμένα μυστικά.
Η δυναμική της ροζας να μεγαλώσει μόνη της μαζί με το παιδί της σε ένα υγιές περιβάλλον χωρίς το φόβο της επιβίωσης..

Ξεκινώντας λοιπόν το κομμάτι που μιλά για το πόλεμο και την δράση των ηρώων γοητευτικά και συγκλονίστηκα από τις περιπέτειες τους και τον αγώνα τους.
Συγκλονίστηκα για άλλη μια φορά για την βαρβαρότητα των Γερμανών.

Αλλά κάπου 200 σελίδες πριν το τέλος άρχισε να με κουράζει.
Ένιωσα σαν να διαβάζα αλλα πολλά βιβλία στήριγμενα σε αλλα βιβλία του είδους.
Πχ: Αηδόνι.

Η αποκάλυψη στο τέλος με εξέπληξε αλλα Όχι ευχαριστα
Μου άρεσε αρκετά αλλα ως εκεί.

The start of this book was written much like a Danielle steel novel. I really enjoyed the beginning of this book but got a bit lost after it moved onto the war. I’m not a massive fan of war books and felt it did drag on a bit. Despite this it was still a good story and would recommend it
