This book was recommanded to me by a friend who has been a vegetarian all his life and had many vegetarian books in his kitchen. He recommanded two books to me, and this was one.
It is a wonderful introduction to vegetarian cooking thanks to the lenghtly introduction where all ingredients are described (nutrition properties and best ways to store and cook them), lots of pictures provided.
The cooking part is very well illustrated, the final results and the intermediary steps are in pictures. The pictures of the final results look all very delicious and make me want to do them all! Even my young son was attracted and pointed at a few things he wanted to try!
I haven't tried the recepies yet and however I have already learned a lot from reading the ingredients section. I know the cooking will be delicious because my friend told me so and he is a very good cook himself.
Also the ingredients are not impossible to find eventhough it's an american book - so it's suited to Europeans. A small limitation is that the measures are given only in US scales, so you need your conversion tables.
ONE BIG ISSUE THOUGH... I wanted to find a French version and it's not edited in French anymore! The second hand versions for sale in French language are incredibly expensive. Please please please, if you're the author, beg the editor to get it back into print!!
This is such a wonderfully fantastic book. It is not your average vegetarian cookbook, either. The whole first part of the book is actually teaching you about the different types of foods, food groups, general nutritional value, and also their nutritional value for vegetarians specifically. The rest is filled with yummy and interesting recipes, from all over the world, just as the title states. I actually started trying new foods, that I never thought i'd like, because of this book, and found that I do actually like many of them. There are also many great tips located throughout the pages, including alternatives that you can try. Each recipe includes a great, detailed, color photo of the result, so you can really get a feel for what you are about to prepare. I would certainly recommend this book for both new and seasoned vegetarians. It's a must have for your collection!
I love New Vegetarian Kichen by Nicola Graimes, so when I saw this book, I had to get it. (She is the editor.) It does not disappoint. Every recipe I've tried has been very tasty.
One thing I love about Graimes' recipes: they aren't your run-of-the-mill vegetarian recipes. She always provides some unique and delicious recipes, things I've never seen elsewhere (and I've read and tried MANY vegetarian and vegan cookbooks). And, wonderfully, almost all of the recipes are easy to make, from standard grocery store ingredients. Nothing difficult, time-consuming, or esoteric. I highly recommend anything by Graimes, and look forward to her next book.
My all-time most used cookbook so far. I am not a vegetarian, but wanted to learn ways to make vegetable dishes that are delicious, and I haven't been disappointed by this book. I have been using it heavily for years and will probably continue to do so for many more :)
Quite comprehensive for someone that doesn't know much about vegetarian nutrition. I'm picky about my cookbooks and this quickly found a home on my shelves.
