Susan is a London slum child. Constricted by the rigid rules of the East End orphanage she is brought up in, she escapes to dazzling streets of Soho where she is adopted by a group of prostitutes. Soon enough, she too is earning her living 'on the game'.
When Billy 'Apples' Rafferty, a Cockney villain with a heart of gold, becomes her protector, Sue swears to give up her racy life. But when Billy is sent to prison, she soon breaks her promise and her earthy beauty makes her one of Soho's most popular hostesses.
When a lucky encounter secures Susan a respectable job as a manageress of a small hotel in Devon, things finally seem to be going her way. But then her past catches up with her . . .
Lena Kennedy (June 15, 1914 - August 1 1986), was an English author. Her books were mostly historic romantic fiction set in and around the East End of London where she lived for all her life. Some of her books, including her autobiography, were published posthumously.
She appeared, as a subject, on the television programme This Is Your Life shortly before her death in 1986.
I was 15 when first read this and it opened a whole new world to me,.as in prostitution( not graphic details) And why some women turned to it and the old eastend as I heard my grandparents talk.about it during my younger years. Susan had it tough but appeared happy. But made.me grateful.for what I had at the time as it gave me insight into how.tough.some.people have it. This book continues to remain.with.me as a adult and would.love to read it again but cannot find it anywhere.
I always request a Lena Kennedy from the library whenever I know I have a bit of spare time coming up - her books are excellent to relax into, and feel a bit like talking to an old friend on the phone for a long chat. 'Maggie' is still my absolute favourite but I am looking forward to reading more.
An enjoyable book but definitely not as good as Maggie. Lena has a wonderful talent of drawing you into her books and keeping you there until you have finished the book
