The Sixty Minute Mother

Rate this book
In THE SIXTY MINUTE MOTHER Rob Parsons turns his warm wisdom and wit to the subject of motherhood. Talking to a variety of mothers, including Dianne Parsons, from all backgrounds and situations (working, lone, home-based, mothers of babies, teenagers, adopted kids and so on) he has compiled a wonderfully inspirational book on the highs and lows of being a mother, with lots of fresh insights. In his usual style, and never forgetting the essential truth that men need to nurture their maternal instincts too, he has written another winner.

A fantastic book. This really helped me when I started to get poorly and realised I was trying to be super mum. One for any mum of children 0 to 18.

In *The 60 Minute Mother*, Dianne Parsons offers a heartfelt and encouraging look at the joys, challenges, and deep emotional journey of motherhood. Designed as a short, digestible read, this book manages to capture the essence of what it means to be a mother in just one hour—making it perfect for busy mums who rarely have time to sit with a lengthy volume.

Dianne writes with warmth, honesty, and grace. Her tone is more like a trusted friend than a distant author, and her reflections are deeply rooted in real-life experience. The book addresses both the beauty and the burdens of motherhood: the messiness, the self-doubt, the laughter, the exhaustion, and the immeasurable love. It acknowledges that being a mother isn’t about getting everything right, but about showing up, loving deeply, and growing through the journey.

What makes this book particularly special is its reassuring message—reminding mothers that they are not alone, that their sacrifices matter, and that their love has a lasting impact. It’s filled with gentle wisdom, relatable anecdotes, and moments that prompt both tears and smiles.

Though brief, its impact can be long-lasting. Some readers may wish for more detailed parenting strategies, but that’s not the book’s purpose. Instead, it serves as a warm embrace—a celebration of motherhood’s emotional and spiritual depth.

Verdict:

*The 60 Minute Mother* is a beautifully written, uplifting read for mothers at any stage of life. It’s the kind of book you’ll want to keep by your bedside and return to whenever you need a reminder that your love, though imperfect, is more than enough.

I loved this book. Very easy to read and unlike some parenting books actually made me feel a better parent and appreciate my children more having read it. One wee excerpt is a response of a stay at home mother to the question "do you work?". She replied

"Yes, I am in a programme of social development. At present I'm working with three agegroups. First, with babies and toddlers. That involves a basic grasp of medicine and child psychology. Next, I'm working with teenagers. I confess the programme is not going too well in that area. Finally, at evenings and weekends I work with a man aged thirty-nine who's exhibiting all the classic symptoms of midlife crisis. This mainly involves psychiatric work. The whole job involves planning a "make it happen" attitude and the ability to crisis-manage. I used to be an international supernodel - but I got bored."

Not very gracious I know but very funny!
The book also has a section on "when a mother is alone" and "when a mother is sick" which is very moving.
At the end of each chapter there is "sixty second wisdom" points and a "take a break" page which includes stories from real mums.
Would thoroughly recommend.

This is a short read but recommended to any mums out there who feel they are struggling to juggle relationships, work, children, their own interests, etc. It is nice to know that we are all going through the same thing and that supermum doesn't really exist!

Really enjoyed reading this. Short but very encouraging and left me feeling more positive, less guilty, and wanting to treasure every moment with Jack.
