The ability to read minds can get you tied to a bonfire with the match lit.

When quiet, introverted Anna is convinced by her mind-reading community to become a colonist settling a distant planet because her people believe in helping mankind, she reluctantly agrees. After all, she’s been taught all she needs to know to stay safe and be helpful. Except nothing taught her what to do when the minds she’s reading aren’t human.

She figures the years-long trip to the distant planet will give her time to make friends and fall in love. But half-way through the journey a rogue meteor punches through the starship and lands at her feet. And that’s just the beginning of her problems, from vague whispers in the night to colonists dying randomly with no discernible cause. But she can’t tell anyone what she knows because she doesn’t want to end up on that bonfire.

Can a nice girl who just happens to read minds save an entire colony from unknown alien threats? Or will she get them all killed?

Florence's stories begin as simple tales of contemporary life, often in small towns or the wilderness she knows so well. Where they go from there is what makes them special. There is always a strong sense of place. Often they skew reality slightly by crossing genres to contain paranormal, sci/fi, or fantasy elements. There is usually a romance and there are always characters her readers like and would enjoy having as friends.

Most of all, there is a story because what Florence does best is tell stories. Well plotted stories that carry the characters towards a logical conclusion that always includes a happy ending. Stories that shine light on the human condition while they celebrate the world we live in. Stories that her readers relate to and remember long after the reading is over.

She writes about people who are as normal as apple pie (most of them, anyway) who unexpectedly find themselves in the middle of situations ranging from the heartwarming through the difficult and all the way to the horrendous. But Florence's characters choose to act instead of running away. In the process, they survive, thrive, overcome whatever obstacles large or small are thrown in front of them, and while they are at it, they find time to fall in love.

Florence was born in the city and has lived in the suburbs, small towns, the country and the wilderness, where she still lives with her husband and a cowardly cat named Smoke.

At various times in her career she's been a confession writer, a copywriter, a ghost writer and an editor. She writes short stories, novellas and novels. Her work has been categorized as romance, science-fiction, fantasy, mainstream and eco-fiction, to name a few genres that it fits beautifully into.

This mind-bending sci-fi thriller hooked me from the first page. The story follows Anna, an introverted mind-reader, who reluctantly joins a mission to colonize a distant planet. Her abilities, meant to help her community, become a terrifying burden when she realizes the minds she’s reading aren’t human.

The journey to the planet, already fraught with isolation and uncertainty, turns deadly when a rogue meteor strikes the ship and mysterious deaths begin among the colonists. The tension builds perfectly, with a mix of suspense, alien mystery, and psychological drama.

Fans of sci-fi, mind-reading powers, and alien suspense will love this gripping story. Anna is a relatable protagonist whose quiet strength and moral compass make her an unforgettable hero.

Entertaining sci fi adventure

If you prefer your science fiction to be hard on the science, you might want to skip Alien Contact. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. The romances were believable, the characters were interesting, and the story was engrossing. There is a body count and violent prejudice. The non-humans are well-written and fascinating. Alien Contact is an inventive story.
