The kids at Koala Hills are finally in Grade six. From favouritism on the first day, to the indignity of sitting on the asphalt for the longest ever final assembly, these kids just can't wait to get to high school. They have plenty to say during this last year; critics, all of them.
This continues the subversive naughtiness established in the first two books; Mr Bollie's 'date' to the school ball (clearly depicted by Craig Smith's wonderful illustrations as an escort) is just one of many sneaky little jokes that kids will completely miss but adults will catch and chuckle over. The fact that these books were written by a primary school teacher (in the 1990s) lends them a believability that is striking and timeless. I currently work in a primary school (in the 2020s), and it's uncanny how much of what is captured here is still true today, from the pupil archetypes to the rhythms of a school year. Brilliant!
