Warm, sweet and absolutely hilarious. It's difficult to say whether or not it's simply because I'm Estonian and thus I find it "sooo cute" seeing foreigners struggle with something completely normal to me, but either way this is one of my favorite books ever.
Miskit pole muutunud :)
kui kellelgi on mõttes välismaalt eestisse kolida siis on see kindlasti raamat, mida tasuks enne läbi lugeda. välismaalase vaatevinkel tõi välja palju aspekte eestlaste, ja kitsamalt hiidlaste, eluviisides, millest niisama ei saagi aru.
I recently made an Estonian friend who happens to live on Hiiumaa Island and she recommended this book as dated but hilarious. I did enjoy reading it-- a fast, fun read-- and now I feel I can start to imagine where she lives. I have many follow-up questions about how life has changed today compared with these observations from the '90s.
A couple minor complaints about the book: Wells wrote things like the Hiiumaa culture being different from mainland Estonia but then didn't explain, and talks a lot about his wife's physical beauty yet not her sparkling personality.
A simple predictable collection of recollections of an American living in estonia in the early years of the second independence. Not great literature, certainly, but perhaps worth skimming if you are an American and you are going to be living in Estonia... or, actually, maybe not. It is all a bit dated now. Everything has changed so quickly in post-soviet Estonia.
Overall I liked the book, although at some point half-way through my interest was fading, but then the next chapter got me hooked again :) Would definitely recommend this book to an estonian, not so sure otherwise.
