The classic books of the motivational visionary, collected for the first time in a single volume.
Featuring nineteen beloved works, including As a Man Thinketh, Eight Pillars of Prosperity, The Mastery of Destiny , and From Poverty to Power , here is the first-ever comprehensive and definitive collection of the books of self-help pioneer James Allen.
Formatted in a large, easy-to-read workbook size, with fully redesigned and reset text, Mind Is the Master provides a lifetime's worth of wisdom and guidance from one of history's leading voices of self- affirming and motivational philosophy.
Mind Is the Master compiles Allen's most celebrated books, along with little-known gems and posthumous works-such as Foundation Stones to Happiness and Success and Light on Life's Difficulties -awaiting discovery by a whole new generation of readers.
As a special bonus, Mind Is the Master includes a rare remembrance of James Allen by his wife and intellectual partner, Lily Allen. It is an invaluable window on the life and inner world of a writer whose insights touched millions of readers.
Allen was 15 when his father, a businessman, was robbed and murdered. He left school to work full-time in several British manufacturing firms to help support the family. He later married Lily L. Allen and became an executive secretary for a large company. At age 38, inspired by the writings of Leo Tolstoy, he retired from employment. Allen — along with his wife and their daughter, Nohra — moved to a small cottage in Ilfracombe, Devon, England to pursue a simple life of contemplation. There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 works. He also edited and published a magazine, "The Light of Reason".
Allen's books illustrate the use of the power of thought to increase personal capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth, his works continue to influence people around the world, including the New Thought movement.
Allen's most famous book, As a Man Thinketh, was published in 1902. It is now considered a classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a miserable person.
Following his death in 1912, his wife continued publishing the magazine under the name, "The Epoch".
One of the best books ever written of all time. It explains how to overcome every vice and live a life of virtue step by step it also explains the root of everything u ever wanted to know!
This is a major book for my personal journaling. I work with it each morning. I feel the presence of James Allen, and often have conversations with him during meditation. I just purchased a copy for my Therapist....she had never heard of James Allen. Oh well. There was a time when I didn't know of his writing, and now I have "hypnotic sessions" with him. It's a huge book. The first time I read it cover to cover, but now I just open it to any page and see what James wants to share with me on any particular day. My plans are to write a meditation/affirmation book with "James". He actually suggested it. He'll present the affirmation or Knowledge statement, and I'll design the imaginology or interactive imagery.
Did you ever consider writing a book with an author you respect? Think about it and let me know.
Although Allen is often put in the self-help shelf, he was really a practical mystic and theosophist. His writings uplift one to not only live life more smoothly, but to see and aspire toward our Divine future!
James Allen was such a Saintly Soul---His line of thinking closely aligns with Epictetus's.
"The more Tranquil a man becomes, The Greater is his Success, His Influence his power for Good"
"The Strong calm man is always loved and revered, he is like a shade bearing Tree in a thirsty land "
"It is pleasing to human vanity to believe that one suffers because of one's virtue"
"Intellectual Achievements are the result of one's search for the True and Beautiful in life and Nature, they may sometimes be associated with vanity and ambition, but they are not the outcome of these endeavors : but are the result of long and arduous efforts, and pure and unselfish Thoughts " James Allen
This expansive volume is a harvest of rich inspiration in my life planted by the small seed of "As A Man Thinketh" by James Allen - a gift from my father-in-law some years ago.
It is a simple, but highly impactful read that outlines the spiritual forces that reside within man and that his external world is a direct by-product of his thoughts. His simple truths resonated with me at a time in my life that I was seeking higher expression of success - mired in financial distress and ruin.
I had always been a student of certain success classics by the likes of Wallace Wattles, Prentice Mulford, Emile Cady, Robert Collier, Napoleon Hill (of course!) and others. While "As A Man Thinketh" if fundamentally in unison with these writers, something about James Allen prose and content cut right to the heart of what I needed.
Years later, I happened upon this volume while bargain hunting at the now defunct Borders Books. It is the complete treasure of James Allens' works and was immediately a favorite "friend" on my shelf!
These 19 essays, works, and books run down what was a prolific writing career and one that insightfully captures the spiritual elements of success and holistic living. As an author of books on success, sales and life mastery, I believe that we should live complete lives - mentally, socially, physically and financially.
My favorite volumes within this work are "As A Man Thinketh", From Poverty to Power, and the daily Book of Meditation For Every Day In the Year - Fabulous! My absolute favorite is "Eight Pillars of Prosperity". I have a separate review of this book on Goodreads but it is a practical application of the seminal work Emerson's "Essay on Compensation".
At 866 pages it is a compilation that you will refer to often (daily using the Meditations!) and will become the go to reference guide on your bookshelf.
This is a top 10 book in my library and I highly recommend it!
Quite a lot of content from James Allen. All very good. He really fleshes out the teachings of Budha and Christ with the skill and vocabulary of an 18th century Englishman. His words have impacted my life more than anyone except Christ. All of his works are very good but the ones that stand out in this volume are Byways of Blessedness, From Poverty to Power, As a Man Thinketh, and The Eight Pillars of Prosperity. Well worth your money and time.
I have gone over this book many times throughout the years for over a decade (in fact, I have 2 copies, one of them broken apart from all the use). It is a collective of all the wisdom that James Allen accrued in his lifetime, conveniently packaged in one tidy 880 page book.
I try to read it daily if I can along with the Bible. It has always spoken to my heart. I have always dreamed of living the life that James Allen espouses, and hopefully, someday live it fully. It is a book that illuminates the right way of living, where character, self control, righteousness, truth and morality triumph over evil. Anytime I get discouraged, I always come back to read and become inspired all over again.
Although James Allen lived in the 19th century, I really wish James Allen was still alive. I would be showing up at his signings and thanking him for changing my life forever. As Lily Allen wrote in his memoir, when James was a young boy and a voracious reader - his father remarked - "My boy, you have lived before. Such knowledge comes not in one short life." And it is so. May his words continue to live on throughout the ages, illuminating and enriching the lives of those here, and many to come.
Complete works for only $21 and a workout to carry around. The language is archaic and would be brilliantly modernized, but it is still very insightful.
