Midnight Bounties

Midnight Bounties 1: A LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
Basebuilding is for beginners.

What about turning a shoddy nightclub profitable in the worst part of town? That's more like it!

Stuck with a nightclub after a job gone wrong, Frank has to figure out how to rebuild something he never even wanted. That's just the first of his problems.

Party with orcs, barter with gnomes, drink with dwarves, and make shady deals with the scum of Sankta Varath, the greatest city in all of Steelheart Kingdom. And that's just the first week.

Frank isn’t a manager, he's got zero people skills, and even fewer connections in the business. With a drow for a bartender, a religious zealot for a waitress, an ogre with a sleeping problem for a bouncer, and an orc dancer, just what could go wrong?

About the Series: Mixing slice-of-life with fantasy action, mystery, system management, adopting a ragtag group of rejects, and a game system that screwed the MC by giving him a cursed sub-class, this LitRPG/GameLit series is perfect for readers who enjoy exploring rich world-building and complex characters.

4.5 stars, it was really fun! At the start, I found protagonist pretty repulsive (I rarely play a fighter and I usually prefer the main character bathe at least once every few days...) but this novel changed my heart about Frank and everyone in his story.

I would love to play a console game like this BUT I also feel like it would get caught up in Executive Notes Hell and be a completely different game by release, so I'm happy to read it in LitRPG form instead. Also, I appreciate not needing to grind like Frank.

I'll definitely get Book 2 and I'll likely check more by this publisher because this balance of action, humor, with a touch of mystery and incremental payoffs is just what I want sometimes :)

A thoroughly enjoyable slice of life litrpg, with a little action for spice!

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about the premise of a fantasy nightclub. But the whole thing worked out better than I’d expected! If you like slice of life, then think Battlemage Farmer but with a more adult oriented setting. Nothing really descriptive or anything, just mention of dancers and and a lot of alchohol etc. no sex scenes or anything. This one has some found family themes, a mature and smart Mc, and a rather interesting supporting cast. Definitely one to pick up if you want something a little darker than Lrgends and Lattes.

This is almost the kind of story that belongs in Terry Pratchett's Discworld Universe. An adventurer turning his hand at opening a seedy nightclub run by an eclectic group of eccentric fantasy characters screams Discworld to me, and is exactly the sort of thing I would normally love reading. The trouble is, the writing isn't smart enough to pull it off.

There's all the groundwork in place to make this book feel like it belongs in that great series; it just struggles to elevate the material to the same standard. Like Pratchett's work, there are a lot of juvenile jokes and purposely stupid/ignorant/childish characters, but where Pratchett used this as a surface layer hiding something more intelligent and meaningful, here there is only the surface level.

The result is that this no longer felt satirical but instead childish. Considering a lot of the subject matter, this is not a novel for children. So, while it kept bringing to mind the magnificent Discworld series as I read this book, it failed to live up to the same standard and ultimately wasn't for me. I'm on the fence about whether I will pick up the next book to see if the series improves or if I'll just let this story go.

Kudos to this one for doing something different with LITRPG. Much of the game element of this one is focused on ‘basebuilding’ – in this case, the mc Frank is a bounty hunter who finds himself running a nightclub, which he has to equip, employ staff, attract customers, and level up etc.
Unfortunately, I got a little bored of this – the levelling up process was a bit too mapped out and felt like jumping through hoops rather than feeling like an exciting plot. Also, and this is a me thing, it was written in first person. I rarely enjoy this and I’m not sure why this choice was made for this book.
There are lots of laughs. It may attract fans of Legends and Lattes, though this one has a darker sense of humour than ‘cosy fantasy’.

It's OK. One of those long stories about a guy who meets a bunch of other people.

Like most modern protagonists, he doesn't really have a plan. Or a goal. Just meandering through life without knowing 'why' and eventually settling on a half hearted 'to protect what is mine' kind of thing.

Finding a protagonist with a sense of purpose is a rare thing - and not really found here.

One negative, it doesn't seem that the author knows much about sword fighting or combat other than gaming. The combat reads like a mediocre RPG and takes enough time that people can talk to each other and stuff.

But it is mildly interesting. I rate it as 'something to listen to while you are doing other stuff'.

One size fits all

I lay here in bed, turn the last page an wonder, how does the author sleep at night. What a strange mind . I have to admit I really don't know of any other book where the characters were so diversified. You have your Orcs. Demons dwaves, vampires etc., but they each are more. This novel was hard to put down. How do you write about a human trying to establish a nightclub, and the trials and tribulations involved and make the novels hard to put down. C. Castor did it. Kudos to you. Satyr that does what to what!!!!!

Good solid read

I had this recommended to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I felt it was worth the price. I thought it was a solid read and delivered. The main character was cool and not overpowered as in some LitRPGs. I enjoyed the characters growth and struggle with his inner demons along with him building his new life.

Very fun, very well done, very entertaining

I had no expectations going in and had an absolute blast reading this one. Great characters, great worldbuilding, great action scenes, and it’s consistently funny without trying too hard. Very much worth a read and apparently the sequel will be out soon, too.

This one is a bit odd.

I don't understand why the main character makes the choices he does, but they are consistent and seem to fit his backstory. The whole thing is very entertaining and leaves a lot of story available for further books in the series. All in all, this is a great start for a series.

Reads like a fantasy tavern keeper game..

A bounty hunter with a conflicted past becomes a tavern keeper by accident. He keeps trying to upgrade his bar against rising odds.

The story has several side plots and twists to keep the reader interested as the main plot is not that interesting. The story was okay enough to keep me reading the first three books.

Amazing and funny

I loved this book. It is exactly as described a easy relaxing funny read unlike some other heavy on stats little on story or character plots.

Enjoyable slice of life litrpg

There have been a few attempts at a bar LITRPG story, but this is the only one that has Landed for me. Frank, an ex-soldier, ex-bounty hunter takes over a nightclub.

KU Review

That was incredibly entertaining. The blurb didn’t do it justice. Funny. Irreverent. Flat out entertaining.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

Pleasantly surprised! Well written, interesting characters. Mystery, progression! A cool world with an interesting system, it was great. If there was another one I’d get it right now!

Great Book

It's a very real story. One gets tired of war and wants a change and chances upon a chance to make a better life, not just for themselves but others as well. Of course nothing goes quite right does it

Over 4 hours and nothing happened. Like there was a kind of racist mosh pit and yet, I couldn't tell you what any of the characters are except one note of stuffy, stupid or lazy or a combination thereof. It was so, so boring.

I had no idea what litrpg was before this book but as a fantasy reader and a gamer this was fantastic from start to finish cosy fantasy vibe with some high Acton packed in.

A nice relaxing read

so I loved this book it was just what I needed. Easy to read and funny slice of life.
It has battled but they are spread out and aren't as many as hard core litrpg, so if that is what you are wanting this is not the book for you.

Fantastic read!

Thoroughly enjoyed this, it was something a little different to most of the books I’ve read in the genre, a nice slow pace and a relaxing vibe with just enough action and drama. Can’t wait for the next!
