Here are four stories about Henry, in which he goes to the dentist, torments his brother Peter, creates havoc at his birthday party, and plans revenge when Moody Margaret won't let him into her secret club. Now you can read the book and watch each story as an animated episode.
Francesca Simon grew up in California and attended both Yale and Oxford Universities, where she specialised in Medieval Studies. How this prepared her to write children’s books she cannot imagine, but it did give her a thorough grounding in alliteration.
She then threw away a lucrative career as a medievalist and worked as a freelance journalist, writing for the Sunday Times, Guardian, Mail on Sunday, Telegraph, and Vogue (US). After her son Joshua was born in 1989, she started writing children’s books full time. One of the UK’s best-selling children’s writers, Francesca has published over 50 books, including the immensely popular HORRID HENRY series, which has now sold over twelve million copies.
Francesca won the Children’s Book of the Year in 2008 at the British Book Awards for Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman. HORRID HENRY is published in 24 countries and is also an animated CITV series. She lives in London with her husband, son, and Tibetan Spaniel, Shanti.
Not as entertaining as the last book I read (book 1) but still cute and funny.
Henry doesn't always get his way and I think these books do a good job showing how horrible he is and that his bad behaviour doesn't go unpunished (except on a few occasions where it's somewhat justified).
Translation is consisently good. It'll be weird to read it in English later.
I have no idea why Horrid Henry series is loved by many people on Goodreads. Henry is just a mean boy, not funny, not clever etc. I gave 2/5 just because the book is not didactic on the contrary of many examples of children literature.
"Horrid Henry Tricks The Tooth Fairy" was the first short story amongst four in this book. This story was about how Horrid Henry is jealous when everyone else is losing a tooth and getting money from the tooth fairy so he tries to find a way to tick the tooth fairy into giving him some money which proves difficult. The second story " Horrid Henry's Wedding" is about when Horrid Henry is forced to be a page boy for his cousin's wedding. He is forced to wear a horrible, frilly costume and so tries to sabotage the day in revenge. The third story "Moody Margaret Moves In' is about when his hated classmate Margaret moves in for two weeks while her parents are on holiday. At first Mum and Dad don't believe that she is really moody but they quickly learn that Horrid Henry wasn't exaggerating. In this story one of Horrid Henry's pranks actually pleases Mum and Dad as Margaret's parents come home early after a fake telegram made by Horrid Henry. The final story "Horrid Henry's New Teacher" is about Horrid Henry's attempts to make his new scary teacher Mr Nerdon run away screaming. If Horrid Henry can do this he will win Rude Ralph's football due to a bet the two boys made about it.
I found my-self laughing out loud while reading this book and think that adults and children alike will enjoy reading it. It would be perfect as a year 2 class reader as the stories are short to keep the children engaged. It could be used as a base for a lot of work in literacy on alliteration, character and similes. The character's in this book are very vivid and well described. There are a lot of uses of adjectives also. The only negative of the book is that it is slightly dated (for example the use of telegrams instead of e-mail.) However the humor and characters mean this book can still be enjoyed and used in the classroom today.
This book I would recommend as a independent book for children at the ages 8-10 for guided reading or quiet reading sessions. Also it could also been used to read out loud to a group of 6-8 years during a class. This will be a good way to ask the children to use their imagination to guess what will happen next and encourage them to write their own version of the next part. This enhances creativity. The story is part of a collection of a well known character called Henry who is mischievous in comparison to his brother who is referred to as 'perfect'. In this story Henry notices how children get money in return for their fallen out teeth and decides to play a trick on the tooth fairy. This book is good in the sense that it is humorous and due to the humour children will be encouraged to continue reading. Also the way it is presented in clear spaced typing and exciting illustrations. This book can be used for drama in order to act out parts of the story and the teacher can encourage students to describe the feelings of others who are affected by Henry as well as the feelings Henry may be feeling. A good way to use this book may be during drama when they act out the story. Also to enforce their own social discipline as the teacher can ask the students: What is Henry doing? Is this right? Why? This could lead to students making posters to encourage positive behaviour. Also used in literacy to use similes and metaphors to describe Henrys attitudes as well as others feelings and attitudes.
However a negative point in regards to this book is children may adopt Henry's attitude and behaviour and confuse themselves as they see his as a favourable character. The teacher must make the students aware of the consequences of his behaviour and explain why it is not right. To avoid this misconception.
Another cute, fun read. I think I actually liked the stories here more than those in the first book. They were much funnier and a lot more enjoyable.
Henry's parents still suck, though. His teacher too.
But the Tooth Fairy story was pretty cute, especially reading it as an adult who knows that the Tooth Fairy isn't real, so it was probably Henry's mom who wasn't falling for any of his tricks. The wedding story was also good. I can't blame Henry for being miserable at his cousin's wedding, I kinda hate weddings too. Uncomfortable clothes, loud music, boring ceremonies, and being forced to socialize with people you don't like? Yeah, hard pass.
The pranks were pretty funny and it was especially funny how he tried to trick the tooth fairy. He gets into trouble really easily, even sometimes when it is Peter who is causing the trouble behind their backs.
2.5/5? This was pretty much like the other books except for 2 things: -the 3rd story had a nice change of the formula (the usual henry being horrid->adults are mad) and this time his parents didn’t hate the prank he pulled -the 4th story… was a little too much imo. It’s about henry trying to win a bet by making the new teacher run screaming and !spoiler alert! In the brackets ((he ends up pretending his brother fell out of the window and died! and the teacher faints! and henry’s happy)) . Starting to think this isn’t the perfect book for kids lol I think some kids will find it entertaining but maybe some will learn bad things idk🥸
Henry is truly horrid and evil. Kids like this book because of its humor but it must be stressed to them the consequences of being such a horrible person. It can open up good talking points about kindness and bullying and consequences of actions.
I don't even understand why I am rereading all these books. Henry might just be the worst character I've ever read of. It seemed fun back when I was 7-10 years old, but it's just extremely cringy lol.
An all-time favourite on mine. The best of the Horrid Henry collection. I loved them all growing up but I particularly enjoyed the plot behind this one. A very moreish and 'easy' read that you will finish in one sitting.
I enjoyed reading this when I was young. I think this book is very interesting to read since it has many good ideas. Bur some are not realistic, when Perfect Peter doesn't like sweets, or acts like a 20 years old instead of a kid.
