This is amazingly consistently wonderful. So far, only 2 recipes (and I've tried most by now) didn't come out, and one was salvageable. The chocolate cookies came out like tar, however.
I was given this gift at my wedding shower by my sister-in-law who included a list of her go-to recipes from this cookbook. That was 12 years ago. Over the years, I've made the recipes she recommended, some multiple times, and liked them, but I've never ventured out beyond those 5 recipes. For the last 2 months I've concentrated on expanding into never opened pages and have been delighted with the results. I focused on the main dish and dessert sections. I didn't make anything from the wild game section as I have no access to wild game and recommended substitutions weren't given. My husband who isn't much of a casserole fan loved the Adobe Chicken Casserole and I agree. Most of the salads I made were pretty basic but made better with good, easy homemade dressing recipes. Both the Beer Bread and the Bourbon Pecan Pound Cake were highlights from the baking section. The best recipes I made were two of the easiest: Lemon Carrots and Easy Pots de Crème. While I normally balk at sugar in vegetables, these carrots with a lemon based syrup that essentially caramelizes the carrots was awesome. I made it early in October and then just made them again for Thanksgiving. I'm not sure I'll ever make standard pots de crème (a French style chocolate custard), which can be tricky with all the egg tempering, after making this easy version. Five ingredients and a blender is all it takes, and it was delicious.
Why not 5 stars? This is a lovely, large, oversized hardback cookbook, but there are no pictures. I like to see food before I make it. It doesn't matter much in the long run, but I think it would have been improved with at least a few photo pages. Also, some of the instructions on a few recipes were lacking. It was fine for me, but a novice might have trouble knowing about preparing a pan for baking, etc. Overall an excellent cookbook!
Haven't done as many recipes out of this book as I'd like. However, several of my favorite recipes come out of this book. Right off the top of my head some of the salads are excellent and I have a warm spot in my heart for the drunken chicken. In fact, copies of this book have travelled among my mother's family and I liked the drunken chicken recipe so much my mother got me this book as a gift.
This has been my mom's favorite cookbook for years, and every recipe that she has made from it(that's a lot of recipes!) has been delicious. Most of our staple meals come from this book. I am only beginning to cook, but every recipe I have tried has been easy and delicious.
It is a well-put-together book. But I found the recipes overly trying to be different and impress. If you were eating in a gourmet restaurant and someone else was making it. Maybe. Just Maybe. I love cookbooks. This one wasn't for me. I wanted it to be. I have lived in Colorado for over 25 years. But this book seemed odd. I will donate it to a person who collects them because it is put together very well. The price for a book of this quality was very fair. I am sure some would love this book. So I gave it a 3.
I have been searching for years for a coffee cake recipe called Bishop's Bread that is not a yeast risen coffee cake. This cookbook had one, so I ordered a used copy for a very decent price. Flipped thru the whole book and have marked a bunch of recipes to try someday. You know how that is. Have I made the Bishop's Bread yet? No, I have not. Haha. Someday.
I love this cookbook! I received it as a wedding gift over twenty years ago and have since bought a replacement as I'd worn the original from the binding. I've made most of the recipes over the years with only a couple of disappointments. Many of the recipes have become family staples (California Pine Nut Salad), and even holiday traditions (Crab Strata on Christmas morning). My daughter now has her own copy and someday when my son marries he and the lucky lady will get their own copy as well.
