Tales of the Red Panda

Tales of the Red Panda: The Mind Master

Rate this book
Sinister forces are at work, striking within the very heart of the city's elite with powers that seem otherwordly. Are the attacks random? Simply for profit? Or is an unknown predator hunting our masked heroes themselves? If the mysterious Ajay Shah really does have powers that rival the Red Panda, will even the Terrific Twosome of Toronto be able to resist the might of... The Mind Master? The second volume of the Tales of the Red Panda series is written in the breathless style of the classic "Hero Pulps" of the 1930s and 40s. The heroes from "The Red Panda Adventures"; a popular full-cast audio drama adventure series make the leap into pulp prose in spectacular style. This story is a self-contained adventure; you needn't have heard a single episode of Decoder Ring Theatre's long-running audio drama series to enjoy the thrills, mystery and adventure... but fans of the series will take special delight, as the story fits neatly within the series continuity. If you love classic adventure stories, mystery men, pulp fiction and golden age superheroics, you won't want to miss Tales of the Red The Mind Master!

Another fantastic outing for Canada's Greatest Super-Hero! A somewhat darker tale as Gregg Taylor sets the Red Panda against a foe whose mind powers possibly surpass those of our hero.

Consider Taylor's reputed dislike of origin stories, this book contains a surprising amount of background information on the Red Panda. Taylor weaves the flashbacks throughout, revealing just the right amount of info as the story moves along. A very good "not-quite-origin" story.

Again, if you're a fan of the audio drama, you'll enjoy the expansion of the universe. If you've never heard of Decoder Ring Theatre, this is still a great, pulpy super-hero story.

Something I really enjoyed about the Red Panda books over the podcast (at the time) was how much more serious the conflict is. The game is definitely stepped up and things get real. (Of course now the podcast is also pretty life and death now as well).

This book contains something that the Red Panda himself frequently said would never happen ... origin story!

A must read for Red Panda and Flying Squirrel fans.

The latest Red Panda novel from Gregg Taylor, released as an audiobook via the podcast. This novel tells of the story of a deadly foe faced by the Red Panda, with flashbacks to his previous untold origin story.

Not to be missed for fans of the Red Panda and Flying Squirrel.

Another of the Red Panda tie-in novels. One of the patterns I'm noticing is that Taylor seems to use each book to explore a different aspect of the Panda, with this one focusing on his 'mystical' powers of hypnosis and mind control.

There's not really much more to be said about the Panda beyond what I've said in the past - the character and series are a great update to the classic radio dramas of the Shadow, and manage to stay true to them while at the same time leaving behind some of the more unfortunate attitudes tied to those old stories. It's also interesting to see how Taylor used the narrative of a novel to explore things that could only be hinted at in the radio drama format.

Great story! If you are a fan of the decoder ring theatre then you will really enjoy this book. It follows the Red Panda and his sidekick the Flying Squirrel as they fight against the criminals of Toronto and against the Mind Master. It also gives you some back story into the Red Panda's past. Highly recommended if you like radio dramas or superheroes.

I did like this a lot. But it was Almost plagiarism to Batman Begins.
