Touch starved, Black hides his loneliness under a gruff demeanor. Because of his size and appearance he is shunned by everyone, except Kyrie, the gorgeous waiter at the diner where he eats lunch. When Kyrie needs a place to stay, Black offers him a room. He didn’t mind renting him a room. The man was sweet, inside and out. Six months after moving to Lakeview, Kyrie Walker finds himself without a place to live. When the gentle giant sitting at his table offers him a place to stay, he hesitantly accepts the offer. He’d been drawn to Black the moment they met. No way was he turning down the opportunity to become more. Can a lonely man find the courage to make room in his life for love?
Yes, this is ultimately such a rushed story. For one, we don't really get two know our two main characters. Hell, they barely get to know each other as we don't witness a full conversation between them. The writing is very blunt and hits you over the head with what could have been interesting aspects of their personality but ultimately fall flat. Taylor also indiscriminately changes points of view as it fits the story which is a jarring reading experience. They also make some weird choices that never get explained. Why does Kyrie not question the validity of having to move out within less than 24 hours, did he sign no contract? Why does he feel confident to invite another person over the very next day without at least mentioning it to Black?
It also uses the word manties (man panties?) cause we are gendering underwear now apparently.
(Not related to my rating but this could use another edit as well.)
2.5 stars, rounding up. I decided to take this one in the spirit it seems to be written, that it is a modern day fairy tale, with the merest whisper of Beauty and the Beast vibes. It's not realistic, but I really don't think it is meant to be.
This was intriguing, funny and wonderfully written. I enjoyed the nuance, rhetoric and images that formed in my head as I read each sentence. Thank You, for I laughed, cried and hollered Kyric won the wars, One by One!
Very good read. I love the instant attraction between the two. It was nice to read a book with a happy ending. I will definitely read more of this authors work.
Like all of M. Taylor's books, this is a short but complete story. She has a way of writing that gets to the point and heat, without leaving anything major out. But as always, I wish the novellas were a little longer. Kyrie and Black are good together. The story goes by fast. angst 0.5/5 heat 3.5/5 story 4.5/5 POV multiple. The MCs get povs, but so do some of the side characters. break up no
