Super short novella, in fact it’s prob one of the shortest books I’ve ever read at 24 pages! With that being said it’s still had good structure and storyline and gripped me.

Hiding From Shadows is a compact but chilling descent into fear, solitude, and psychological endurance. In just over thirty pages, John Coon manages to capture the full weight of dread that comes from knowing your worst nightmare might be waiting right outside your door. Ellen’s nightly battle against an unseen menace in the Louisiana bayou feels both deeply human and hauntingly supernatural.

What makes this short horror tale so compelling isn’t just the threat it’s the silence between those threats. Coon’s storytelling thrives in the tension of what we don’t see, letting the quiet dread sink in until it’s nearly unbearable. Beneath the ghost story lies a deeper, emotional resonance: the lingering trauma of abuse, the paralysis of fear, and the fragile hope that refuses to die even when the darkness closes in.

Fans of atmospheric horror where every shadow hides both memory and menace will find Hiding From Shadows unforgettable. John Coon’s storytelling reminds us that horror doesn’t always need to be loud or bloody to be devastating. Sometimes, all it takes is a woman, a bat, and the long hours of the night.
