Ferdinand Magellan: Master Mariner

Rate this book
When, in the year 1519, Ferdinand Magellan stood on the deck of his flagship, ready to set sail on one of the most daring and adventurous voyages the world has ever known, it was the moment he had dreamed of from the first day he went to sea. He believed that somewhere there must be a passageway-an unknown straight-connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the mysterious sea beyond, and he was determined to find it. He what been refused ships and men by his own King Manuel of Portugal, but the King of Spain had supplied them.
Only a few men had faith in the venture, and not even Magellan foresaw the difficulties that were in store for him. For, in addition to the perils of sailing uncharted seas, he found himself faced with villainous plots against against his life instigated by the jealous King of Portugal, and intrigue and treachery at the hands of his own mutinous crew.
In Ferdinand Magellan Seymour Gates Pond brings to life the man who named the Pacific Ocean, discovered the straight which bears his name, and, in so doing, proved that the globe could be circumnavigated. It is as much an exciting adventure story as it is the biography of a man with a dream who became one of the world's most fearless and courageous explorers.

Landmark book. Fascinating story about the life of Ferdinand Magellan. Did not know that he was Portuguese. And to find out that he was rejected by his own King, had to go to Spain to gain funding to circumnavigate the globe. Then once he received funding, the king of Portugal tried to have him killed! It was shocking the number of people who betrayed him and tried to ensure that no one would know about Magellan’s discovery. Thankfully that did not happen.

A friend and I both collect Landmark books, and we like to trade from time to time so that we can read more of them. I picked this one because while I knew that Magellan was the first to circumnavigate the world, I did not know much more about him. This is a great introduction to Magellan and perfect for children first learning about him! I recommend this book to all readers aged 7 and up!

I have always been fascinated by this man's life. He was very brave, and should be considered one of the greats of history. His great error was actually how he died, fighting a pointless battle with a random tropical Polynesian king.

A great read about an explorer perhaps as import as Columbus although he receives much less attention. Fernando Magellan is the first man to sail completely around the world. In doing so he crushed the very thought that the earth was flat. It is a great book that I finished reading yesterday. I re-ead it because I remember having it read to me when I was very young. If you are looking for an adventure book involving important history this is your book.
