Yazarın belirttiği gibi aslında kaynağı belirsiz mitler bunlar, hatta bir çoğunun orta avrupa kökenli olduğunu düşünüyor yazar kişisi. Yine de beni asıl etkileyen mitlerin kendi içlerindeki efsanevi/hayranlık uyandırıcı bağlantısı oldu. Başlangıç için iyi bir tercih, sıra mezopotamya ve etrüsk mitlerinde :)

گرچه بدلیل پراگندگی منابع اصلی خود کتاب انسجام خاصی نداره و اسمهای خاص زیادی هم توی کتابه که پیشنهاد میکنم موقع خوندن دورشون خط بکشین (چون طی خوندن لازم میشه برگردید و توضیحت بعضی اسامی رو دوباره مرور کنید) ، ولی در کل برای آشنایی مختصری با اسمها و اسطوره هایی که اسمشون زیاد به گوشم خورده بود بد نبود (البته داستانهای آخرین قسمتش واقعا جالب بودند)ء

For as dry as this was (think Tolkien's Silmarillion), the author started out with his nose in the air, then got progressively sassier. The last 1/4 of the book kept me highly amused!

Yeni hobilere açılmanın vaktinin geldiğini anladıktan sonra okuduğum üçüncü kitap: İskandinav Mitleri.

Kitap yorumuma geçmeden önce birkaç şeyi kesinleştirmek gerekiyor diye düşünüyorum. Herhangi bir konu hakkında "biliyorum" diyebilmek için, konuyu sayamayacağımız kadar farklı kaynak ve düşünemeyeceğimiz kadar farklı perspektiflerden okumalıyız, değil mi? Özellikle, bahsi geçen konu mitoloji, efsane, destan, din vs. gibi tarih öncesi zamanlardan şimdiye olan yolculuğunda kaç kez değiştirildiği ya da düzenlendiği belli olmayan türden bir konuysa. Bu yolda okuduğumuz kitaplar elbette tekrara düşecek, değiştirilen kısımlarının yanında aynı kalan yanı da olacak tabii ki. 5 kitap okumuşsak 4'ü hatta belki 5'i de aynı şeyleri anlatacak bazen. Öğrenme de böyle gerçekleşir zaten, tekrar tekrar görerek, duyarak, okuyarak. Bu "tekrara düşme" problemini gözardı etmemizi sağlayan şey de yaptığımızı seviyor oluşumuz. Kimse istemediği halde mitoloji-tarih dünyasına giriş yapmaz, bizi çeken bir şeyler var ki bu tekrarlara katlanıyoruz. Heh, bunu da söylediğime göre kitaba geçiyoruz.

Öncelikle yazarın hayli uzun tuttuğu (45 sayfa) giriş ve tanışma kısmını okumadan geçmemenizi öneriyorum. Bu 45 sayfalık iki bölümde yazar, İskandinav mitlerinin bilinen 3 kaynağından ve bu kaynakların kısa detaylarından bahsetmiş. Bu kaynakları bilmek, insana ne okuduğunun farkındalığını kazandırdığı için önemli, fikrimce. Bu iki bölümden sonra beş bölümlük mitler kısmı geliyor. Sırasıyla: Aesir, Vanir ve Bazı Krallar bölümünde, bilinen iki tanrı grubu Aesir ve Vanir detaylıca tanıtılıyor. Devamında Odin ve Thor'un 22 sayfalık ilişkilerine tanıklık ediyoruz. Başlıca mitlerden olan, hatta Ragnarök'e doğru atılan en büyük adım denilebilecek olan Baldr ve Loki öyküsü de üçüncü bölümde çıkıyor karşımıza. Diğer bölüm ise Ragnarök odaklı. Kitap geneline bakıldığında, yazarın öyküleştirmenin yanında inceleyerek anlatmayı da tercih ettiğini görüyoruz. Üçüncü tekilden yapılan anlatımların cümle aralarında karakterler, mekanlar, zamanlar ya da direkt Edda hakkında bilgiler görüyoruz. Yine genele baktığımızda, mitlerin anlatımları Edda ya da Skaldic karşılıklarıyla desteklenmiş. Düz yazı okurken bir anda şiir halini görüyorsunuz, böylece açıklaması ile olayın yaşandığı bağlamı karşılaştırma fırsatınız oluyor. Bir nevi rehberlik yapıyor bu kitap size.

Tanrılar ve Kahramanlar bölümünde ileri okuma amaçlı birkaç çok duyulmamış kahramandan ve hikayelerinden bahsediliyor. Kitap geneli için, aralara sıkıştırılan tarihi kalıntı görselleri ve açıklamaları da efsane olmuş açıkçası. Dizin kısmından önce yine ileri okuma amaçlı bir avuç kaynak sunmuş yazar, bu kitabı bitirip karnınızı hala doyuramadıysanız eğer, verilen kaynakları araştırıp kendinize birkaç atıştırmalık bulabilirsiniz.
Fazla uzamadan son olarak yayınevinden bahsetmek istiyorum. Phoenix yayınevini daha önce duyduğumu hatırlamıyorum, yine de kitabı okurken çeviri ya da yazım yanlışından kaynaklı herhangi bir anlam kayması ya da eksilmesi ile karşılaşmadım. Bu konuda tebrik ediyorum kendilerini. İskandinav Mitleri'ni Dünya Mitleri serisinin ilk kitabı olarak çıkarmışlar. Biraz araştırınca diğer halklardan da (Roma, Yunan, Mısır, Hint vs.) mit derlemesi yaptıklarını gördüm. Bu beni mutlu eder :)

Bu incelemeyi de burada bitiriyorum. Genel olarak okuması eğlenceli bir kitap oldu benim için. Siz de Nordikleri biraz daha tanıyayım diyorsanız eliniz bu kitaba bir gitsin. Keyifli okumalar diliyorum.

I'm introducing myself to Norse legends and myths, since I've never really spent much time with them outside of Marvel Comics. I picked this one up from my library because it was one of the few non-fiction, non-children's books dealing with the subject.
It isn't quite what I was looking for, but is very interesting regardless. It gives a broad introduction to the history and preservation of the old Norse tales while relating the stories as we have them, based on the few recorded accounts that have been preserved.
I really was more interested in just the stories and not so much the history of who recorded them and so this book is kind of thin. It tells the stories, but from a more clinical, less storytelling view.
Good historical accounting of what we know of the stories, but not as much fun as a bedtime tale.

R.L. Page is a scholar of Norse folklore and mythology, but this is not a scholarly text. It is a short introduction, barely longer than a pamphlet, to some of the best-known deities, heroes, and fables of the Vikings, with some degree of historical context as well. He gives some passages from the Eddas and other classical written collections in translation, which will help the lay reader to understand his use of sources. I suspect that the book was written with the intention of cashing in on the burgeoning neo-pagan market, although it does not claim to be a guide to modern practice.

This is a really good brief overview of Norse Mythology. It by no means is a complete picture and gives the basic overview of the pantheon and the stories associated with Norse Culture. It's interesting, not hard to read, and all in all a good starter overview. But it definitely got me wanting more.

کتاب به شکل خیلی خلاصه و کلی به اسطوره های اسکاندیناوی پرداخته بود. اشکال متن کتاب اما همین کلی بودن آن بود که متن رو بسیار مخدوش کرده بود. همچنین اشارات زیاد و جای جای کتاب به منبعی که از اون داره داستانی رو تعریف میکنه باعث شده بود دنبال کردن روایت اصلی سخت باشه.

A good crash course into Norse mythology. The first couple of chapters are a broad summary of key periods of Norse culture/history and lists prominent figures who aided in transcribing and translating the original stories. I would have been nice if it listed the entire myths as opposed to giving brief summaries of each, however. Asides from that, each chapter is then divided by categories, such as one chapter focusing on Heroic epics or the Creation story or Eschatology. At the end of the book a list of other resources for Norse myths that one can do further research on(I'll certainly look into those books!)
An enjoyable read, all in all.

If you know next to nothing about Norse myths, this is the book for you. Informative, very well-written and organised. It provides the reader with an overview both of the myths themselves and of the sources that provide us with knowledge of those myths. It turns out that most of the sources we have date back from the Christianisation of Scandinavia, meaning that we have almost no reliable first-hand sources on Norse mythology. But this book still manages to offer a coherent view of the beliefs and legends of that areain pre-Christian times -- sometimes through extreme simplification, as the author himself admits, but this is a very slim volume after all.

Su sencillez, transparencia y rigor hacen de ésta una de las mejores obras para aproximarse a la mitología nórdica en su conjunto, ya que recoge las historias de los principales protagonistas de los mitos escandinavos, así como sus variaciones y de dónde fueron recogidas. También ofrece una interesante bibliografía en varios idiomas, muy útil para profundizar en aspectos concretos de los mitos o para acceder a más contenido sobre los mismos.

R. I. Page's Norse Myths is from the Legendary Past series, which is a cousin to the Reading the Past series where one can read boring yet informative and thankfully short books about runes and Linear B. Norse Myths is a goodly concise overview of the more popular Norse myths and gods and their early medieval source books, but it's boring as all underpants for reasons I cannot explain.

You wouldn't expect a book about mythology to be funny, but this book was clearly written with a touch of humor. It was also informative, well-organized, and interesting. My favorite part was the critical lens through which the author examined the various sources for the myths and noted links between similar legends. Now I want to reread Sea of Trolls.
