I don´t know why, but I dind´t enjoy this book at all... I found it so boring and slow... Even thought I love Susan King work!!!! I don´t know, I think the develop of the story was missing something.
Scotland Spring 1300. Juliana Lindsay dons a feather cape and cap, swims amid a circle of mute swans, stays silent, to divert English attention from Scottish rebels around Elladoune. Gabhan (pronounced Ga-bv-in) MacDuff grows up English knight Gawain Avenel after Glenshie castle is burned out and mother remarries. He is "grandson of the laird who once held Glenshie" p 208.
Gawain saves Juliana from a squad, whispers to remember him as the Swan Knight, then offers to wed her at Swan Feast of King Edward. But he keeps his Scottish past secret until he can find the ruins of his home.
Villain Walter De Soulis, "appointed the first Master of Swans" p 58 and sheriff, wants to keep her in golden chains. He takes her younger brothers hostage, but his wife spoils her 'fosters'.
After the Swan couple marry, fulfill passionate promises, Juliana fills Elladoune with MacDuffs, makes a home for them. Even the nearby monks are rebels.
Laurie is Gabhan's best friend, Scottish but runs with English. As boys, Gabhan "when we were squires" p 224 learned to catch arrow. I thought his catching "faery bolt" would have more to do with her promises to never until etc. Laurie booms "Come and get me, Highland pig!" p 216 as part of game with young brothers. "Played it with my own brothers, as bairns" p 216.
I skipped first of series; I don't like supernatural. Prophecies and predictions seem lazy plot devices. I'm not likely to follow more from author. I did like humor with Laurie's game, monks parading device in front of enemy. Maybe more.
Book:’’ The Swan Laird ” formerly ‘’The Swan Maiden” Author: Susan King Series: Celtic Hearts, Book #3 Release Date: April 26, 2024 Publisher: Dragonblade Length: 312 Pages Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars Blog Rating: 5/5 Saltire Flags
This is the third book and the conclusion of the Celtic Hearts series. It is another revised edition originally titled “The Swan Maiden.” The hero is Sir Gawain the Knight, not the goshawk, who was last seen in “The Hawk Laird” but like the previous two books the author has upgraded and rewritten.
Scotland, 1300-1306
Sir Gawain Avenel makes sure no one knows he is really Scottish born and birth name was Gabhan MacDuff, as his Scottish Laird father and Grandfather were killed by the English. They burned down their castle, his mother and he escaped to her homeland in England, changed his name, was not allowed to speak gaelic, and he could no longer wear his plaid either and had to wear English clothes. His mother eventually met his loving step-father Sir Henry Avenel, now Gawain had three step-brothers, eventually his mother and his step-father had two twin daughters. If his Scottish origins were discovered it could easily put his very life in danger and his entire English family would be accused of being traitors! He pledged himself to the Hammer of the Scots, King Edward the I of England and became a Knight especially having a step-father who was so very respected and well connected among the English nobility. The King is now testing Gawain to see if he will be loyal or betray him again!
Although trouble seems to find Gawain where he had spent some time in an English prison for running with rebel Scot’s and helping James Lindsay and his wife. He had a soft spot for the Scots; he had a lot of guilt as it cost his English family some problems and tragedy. He had also saved a young girl who was Juliana Lindsay-from drowning some six years ago while trying to escape the English who were pursuing her. Somehow all the swans in her loch seemed to protect her, he had named her the Swan Maiden and she named him the Swan Laird. She would not see him until six years later under very different circumstances.
Six years later the King wants to humiliate Juliana Lindsay and eat one of her favorite Swans cobs she named Artan! All the men at this feist try to make a fool of her to make her an example to force her to obey King Edward, except it only makes her despise all these Sasseanchs even more with a passion! The cruel sheriff Sir Walter de Soulis had arrested her and her little brothers as rebels from The Abbot who was their Guardian. They had her in a dungeon and now in golden chains and dressed like a swan. It was Gawain who was kind to her and her swan cobb trying to protect her against the men who were unkind and trying to humiliate her!
Gawain is shocked when the King orders him to marry this bonny lass! Juliane is even more beautiful than she was six years ago although she looks at him with such hatred! He would be bringing her back to Scotland to her castle at Elladoune though eventually there will be a garrison something Juliana will loathe and they want her to sign an oath of loyalty to the KIng. Gawain wants a real marriage and Juliana just wants to escape plus they both carry secrets not trusting each other. Will they ever trust each other and be able to escape people that want to hurt them both and discover love? Read and find out.
Susan King has been one of my go-to-authors for close to thirty years! I think I have read every book she has written. She does amazing research on all of her stories that is always so awe-inspiring and impressive. I seem to always learn something new in each of her books. In this book I learned a lot about swans in this book that I did not know and I found so fascinating. I loved the Arthurian names for the swans and our hero Sir Gawain too! I look forward to reading “The Scottish Bride” next coming in June in her new Highland Secrets series!

Celtic Hearts Book 1 - The Hawk Laird Book 2 - The Falcon Laird Book 3 - The Swan Laird
From the very beginning, after Gabhan and his mother escape Scotland, he vows to return. He becomes an English knight, but finds many knights, and even the King, act dishonourably.
Juliana escapes from her home when it’s being burned, jumping into the loch, but Gawain sees her and rescues her. They bond, with him naming her the Swan Maiden, and not revealing his name, but becoming the Swan Knight.
She takes her role seriously, becoming the magical Swan Maiden and keeping the English away from her kin. Time and again, She and Gawain rescue each other, meeting and being forced to marry by the king, returning to her home, housing the rebels, etc.
Finally, the evil DeSoulis, sheriff at Dalbrae, is defeated, and all the parts fall into place. Gabhan can work to reclaim his home, and Juliana has her home with him.
An epic story in wartime, beautifully depicted in the Scottish landscape. The swan legend is a bit heavy handed, but is more relevant as the story unfolds. Gabhan is clever, Juliana brilliant, and I love the abbot, Malcolm, so cunning, and Laurie, a shrewd soldier always.

This is Sir Gawain's story. He was the English knight who helped saved Isobel's goshawk (also named Sir Gawain) then later on aided her and some others with James Lindsay escape in Laird of the Wind and became a Scot sympathizer. Then for this book, he again helped conceal the girl who swan~dived from a window of a burning castle and abetted in her escape with her family. In both cases, he had to renew his allegiance to the English king and for the latter offense he was imprisoned for 2 years at the Tower of London. The second rescue concerns the Swan Maiden to his Swan Knight for his origins have something to do with swans as hers also with the legend of the Swan Maiden (greatly capitalized by the rebels) and the legendary castle under the lake. Another beautiful enthralling story that will keep the reader lost in the mist of local Scottish myths and lore woven within the author's equally thrilling prose.
Although the story was very well written, I just was unable to connect with the The Swan Maiden.
From the prologue, I liked Gawain/Gabhan. He continually found himself between a rock and a hard place. I felt sorry for his identity dilemma. I also liked aspects of Juliana's character. She was brave but a bit foolhardy. That said, some intangible element had me putting down this read and then dreading taking it back up again. Maybe it was the senseless violence of the period. I don't really know.
I am recommending this book in spite of my own hang ups because Susan King is a good writer and I really liked the ending. I am sure another reader will find book two in the series engrossing.
Content 411: This book contains some violence, which is typical of the period. There is also a modestly written love scene and a few swear words.
Disclosure: I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
I'll admit I was bothered by the violence in this book. I knew it was going to probably be like this, since this the English and it was the 1300s. And even the last book had the fmc in an outdoor cage for months! But at least with the last book, once we got beyond that point, it got much better. Here the depravity and sadism of the villains (the english) just lasted way beyond my comfort level.
I loved both of the main characters - Juliana and Gawain and their love story is beautiful. And all the pets!!! Swans and kittens!!! I always love notable pets!
But the sheriff just seemed to be a bit too bad, kind of Black Jack Randell quality evil. He did get what he deserved, but I wish the man would have been dispatched from this earth sooner in the book. Thank you to netgalley for the ARC. Opinions are my own.
This is the third book of the Celtic Hearts series. Gawain and his mother escape Scotland and Gabhan becomes an English Knight. Juliana her burning home and Gawain rescues her, calling her the Swan Maiden. Juliana is a fiery and passionate character, loyal to the rebel cause. Her heart is also loyal to Gawain, despite him being on the opposite side of her cause. They both carry their own secrets, but they will need to learn to trust each other in order to escape the people who want to hurt them both and find love with each other. Though the story started out a bit slow at first, it was well-written and as it progressed it definitely piqued my interest and kept me engaged. There was plenty of action and suspense along with a beautifully written romance. I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
First story I read in this series and enjoyed Juliana’s character, fiery rebel, loyal and passionate to both the rebel cause and the knight who won her heart. I loved the legends, felt sorry with Gawain’s struggle with his duty, his fealty and what his heart was telling him. In awe how he had survived so many things and most of all, I liked his strong feelings and his need to help the needy at risk of his own life. The romantic scenes made me sigh. A real knight! An interesting plot development with some scenes that made me emotional with the intense and at the same time exciting descriptions. Adventure, action, suspense, romance, some violence, a hateful villain and lot of swans. Voluntarily reviewed this copy that I received for free from eBook Discovery and I liked.
I found the concept of a legend wrapped in rebellion interesting, in that it brought the main characters together. Juliana is a warrior in her own right in her defense of Scotland, and although she and Gawain are fated lovers, they are on opposite sides of the battle. Gawain's allegiance to the Crown is tested not only because of his birth but his love for the Swan Maiden as well. I had difficulty getting into this book and at times found my attention wandering. Nevertheless, I was glad that it came to a good close, especially as the perpetrator of foul deeds received his just reward. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I'm heartbroken! After reading 'The Stone Maiden' and absolutely loving the writing, journey of the characters, the Celtic history woven in it, I was sure I would enjoy the entire series and even bought it! :'(
Boy, was I disappointed in this book. It's extremely slow, the romance didn't truly convince me and the conflicts could've been resolved in half the book or less. It dragged on too much... I plodded through to the end because I'm stubborn. But it was a huge effort and I skipped many pages.
Also, it's confusing why this is billed as being 2nd in the series, when quite clearly the one marked as last comes before. I hope the rest are better... *Sigh*

Gawain, birth name Gabhan MacDuff, lost his father and his he as a child, he was taken to England by his English mother who remarried and changed his name to Gabwain Avenell. He became a knight in England and was sent to Scotland, where he rescued a girl, Julianah aka swan maiden. Years later, they met again at the King's feast where the lady was being paraded and humiliated and rescued her again but it came with many more problems ahead... I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. Have learned much about the and birds Celtic harps, and the history of the time. But more, I have enjoyed SK’s story lines, descriptions and smoothe writing style. Each one is a standout, and this the a capstone. The men are strong, honorable, honest and true hearted though in a time of conflict that was unbearably difficult. The women even more so. Just enough spice, sweetly evocative. Gabhan and Juliana’s story will delight you.
He rescued her twice, but he was on the side of the English king. She was with the Scottish resistance. However, Juliana did not know that Gawain was hiding a secret. He was part Scottish. In this enchanting, Scottish historical romance, enemies must find common ground. Love just might light the way, but their journey would not be easy. Danger would dog their footsteps. Would they emerge victorious? I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to lovers of Scottish historical romance.
I absolutely loved this novel. it was a refreshing story. Legend fulfilled through a couple of star crossed lover's. An angry King of England, an evil despicable sheriff, a young woman imprisoned and abused and a long lost Laird with only a razed castle. This was a whirlpool of adventures. Well written by Susan King. A must read. Wonderful final book in the Celtic Hearts set. I hope there will be more
This is story haunts you as the tale spins its way. First weaves a mystic pattern around Celtic legends . Next it tempts with the fantasies about swans. It sprinkles in some harpsichord of the animosity between Sctland and England All this woven into a lyrical plaid of characters artistically drawn into a magical love story. You simply will enjoy such tapestry!
This is a medieval romance set mainly in Scotland. Our hero is torn between his birth heritage and his stepfather's loyalty to King Edward. He has got into real trouble a few times because of it.
Our heroine is the type legends are written about. She uses her talents to rebel against the invaders.
There is beauty and sadness to go with the lovely romance. It's a very unusual story. The swans play a huge part and are just as important as the human characters. An action packed book ,and it's hard to see how their problems can be solved.
A fantastic end to an intriguing, awesome series. Gawain and Julianna come together on an adventure of a life time. The dynamics between the two of them is wholly engaging. They are strong and determined yet the pain and suffering feels real and authentic. So much so that you may be brought to tears. The villain will have your hate emotions at full peak. I found myself yelling at him throughout the story and wishing I could take him on personally. You can read this as a stand alone yet I'd seriously recommend reading the entire series, it's worth not just one read but repeat readings.
Read this long ago and know I loved it then. This new version of The Swain Laird touched me in a new way. Felt like I was there and the story wove itself around me, enveloped me. The characters became my friends…or my energies. I felt like joining the fight for freedom! Much appreciation, Susan. Reggi

That is so true and such a delight to read. I highly recommend I highly I highly recommend her Writing and stories To everyone.
As a dependent of the Douglas Scots, I love reading this series. The times of Robert Bruce as he fights his way to become the King of Scotland. This series reveals the hardships and determination of the rebels, and ultimately, the success the Scottish King.
Es un buen libro pero se me hizo tedioso con tanta lucha y tanto soldado y rebelde, prefiero que haya mas romance en las historias que leo. Tarde demasiado en terminarlo pero aun así tuvo su encanto.
I so so so love it! It's a wonderful story of a love struggling in the midst of war. A story of two different people who's fighting to do what they have to do while learning how to love and trust.
En resumen me he emocionado, y he sonreído.
