Król mrówek nie jest książką historyczną, lecz jak najbardziej współczesną, w tym sensie, że utwory w niej zawarte, traktując o motywach mitologicznych jednocześnie odnoszą się do doświadczeń człowieka XX wieku. Zbigniew Herbert nie miał zamiaru opisywać w niej po raz kolejny mitów, znanych już z tylu innych książek: Król mrówek to jego prywatna mitologia, jak napisał w jednym z projektów tego zbioru. Występują w niej nie główne, lecz poboczne postaci z mitologii - bogowie, herosi i ludzie zaplątani w mity i ludzką (nieludzką) historię.

About the author

Zbigniew Herbert was a Polish poet, essayist, drama writer, author of plays, and moralist. He was also a member of the Polish resistance movement. Herbert is one of the best known and the most translated post-war Polish writers, and has been nominated several times for the Nobel Prize in literature.

At present, Ares has discovered an overwhelming predilection for conspiracies, gangs, and terrorist organizations. His life up to now, and his modest education, have found an outlet in treacherous assassinations and the construction of primitive bombs.
At this moment he is sitting at the terrace of a café, overlooking a quiet city. He looks at his watch. He pretends to be calm.

These short eleven pieces by the Polish poet blend mythological re-creation short story with eassy writing and cover Greek, Roman and biblical themes; of which he had a big interest in, and featured heavily in some of his early poetry. While the prose is very accomplished here, and he skillfully fuses the ancient with a more contemporary feel, the book overall was nowhere near as fascinating as his other essay collection 'Barbarian in the Garden'. Highlights for me were Endymion, The Olympian General, Cleomedes, The Infernal Dog, and The King of the Ants.

Kick-ass retellings of the oldies...
Herbert is a fantastic twentieth century poet and he re-writes these myths beautifully. Check out "Endymion."

Twórczość Zbigniewa Herberta nigdy nie była dla mnie prosta. Nawet jeśli chodziło o wiersze, sprawiały mi one niemałą trudność przy interpretacji na lekcjach języka polskiego (chociaż, kto wie? Może to ja miałam rację, a moja polonistka myliła się staszliwie, co do tego, co autor miał na myśli?).

Sięgnęłam po tę książkę z dwóch powodów - 1. nie jest to mój "usual read", śmiem twierdzić, że wręcz nie sięgam po poetów, nawet jeśli piszą prozę, 2. odrodziła mi się ostatnio miłość do mitologii greckiej i byłam ciekawa jak Herbert dostosował mity do własnych warunków i przemyśleń. Mimo tego, że książeczka ma zaledwie 150 stron, mam wrażenie jakbym kompletnie jej nie rozumiała i nawet nie sięgnęła głębi, którą zawiera. Może jestem zbyt wielką ignorantką, może Herbert do mnie nie trafia swoją prozą, tak jak nie trafia do mnie swoją poezją, niemniej, było to ciekawe doświadczenie czytania czegoś, po co (raczej) normalnie nie sięgam.

Para los nómadas de la civilización moderna, para los que habitan en los aviones a reacción, Anteo será siempre el símbolo del bárbaro primitivo. Parecen dejarse llevar por la ilusión de que romper los vínculos y moverse de forma enfermiza son condiciones imprescindibles del progreso. Y olvidan que la persecución del sol, las utopías globales, acabarán por fuerza en catástrofe. El última instancia, todo se reduce a la elección o a la adjudicación de un sitio en el cementerio.

"Pitagorejczycy w jednym ze swoich hermetycznych tekstów przestrzegają, żeby nie zjadać własnego serca, to znaczy nie pogrążać się w bezpłodnej
rozpaczy. Można przypuszczać, że Kleomedes, wbrew mądrym zaleceniom,
żywił się swoim sercem. A ono odradzało się wciąż na nowo, tętniące mocno
zdrowym, beznadziejnym, synowskim przywiązaniem"

mogę udawać że przełykam i wypluwać wlasne serce, taplać się w kruchej, bezpiecznej melancholii, nie widząc że to śmieszne. i tak zaraz zobaczę. zabiliśmy Dionizosa, Księżyc dokonał gwałtu.

In some ways, I felt like I wasn't quite insightful enough to grasp the underlying meaning in a few of the essays. It is a narrow volume, but it took me weeks to get through it because I had to stop and digest what I had read. That is so rare in today's writing, and I was grateful I had the opportunity to read his work.

Interesante visión de algunos personajes mitológicos: relatos breves desde puntos de vista a veces inimaginables; pero casi me han gustado más las notas finales del narrador y el apéndice con la sección «Otras versiones de algunas obras».
