There's a lot to like about this little book. It introduces kids to Lindbergh and the early days of flight. Demarest spends the first several pages describing and illustrating Lindbergh's youth, which is important in a book for young readers. The illustrations add to the story, and Lindbergh's passion for flight is well-developed. I especially appreciate the map that spans the inside covers; it shows Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic, noting weather conditions and the starting point (with the Statue of Liberty) and the end point (with the Eiffel Tower).
This was a good picture book biography to use with my 1st graders today to introduce Charles A. Lindbergh on what would have been his 101st birthday. I learned quite a few new things about him reading this to my students. I didn't know that he went to college in Wisconsin! I also didn't know that he barnstormed and would wing-walk. My students found that very cool, but thought it was also very dangerous.
