People laud this magnum opus as one of the peaks of world literature. Other well-known literary works include his numerous poems, the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther .
With this key figure of German literature, the movement of Weimar classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries coincided with Enlightenment, sentimentality (Empfindsamkeit), Sturm und Drang, and Romanticism. The author of the scientific text Theory of Colours , he influenced Darwin with his focus on plant morphology. He also long served as the privy councilor ("Geheimrat") of the duchy of Weimar.
Goethe took great interest in the literatures of England, France, Italy, classical Greece, Persia, and Arabia and originated the concept of Weltliteratur ("world literature"). Despite his major, virtually immeasurable influence on German philosophy especially on the generation of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling, he expressly and decidedly refrained from practicing philosophy in the rarefied sense.
Influence spread across Europe, and for the next century, his works inspired much music, drama, poetry and philosophy. Many persons consider Goethe the most important writer in the German language and one of the most important thinkers in western culture as well. Early in his career, however, he wondered about painting, perhaps his true vocation; late in his life, he expressed the expectation that people ultimately would remember his work in optics.

Een veelzijdige dichtbundel van Goethe.
Vooral de gedichten die passen bij de vorm van romantiek waar het gaat om de verbinding tussen mens en natuur of de dramatiek van de natuur zoals bijv. Heideroosje.
Gedichten als deze voelen voor mij als schilderijen van bepaalde schilders uit de romantiek zoals Casper David Friedrich of William Turner.
Niet alle gedichten spraken me evenveel aan en door de veelzijdigheid mistte er soms een centraal thema. Dit komt ook omdat, het een verzameling is van verschillende gedichten van Goethe uit verschillende tijden.

Poëzie in een andere taal omzetten lijkt me de zwaarste opgave voor een vertaler, nagenoeg ondoenlijk zelfs als de gedichten ook nog in een ander tijdperk zijn geschreven. Maar dit boekje, een greep uit de 3000 door Goethe geschreven gedichten, vond ik in zijn opzet prachtig. Het zal vast meer zijn gedaan; het gedicht in de oorspronkelijke taal met daarnaast de vertaalde weergave. Ik kende het nog niet en het beviel me ontzettend goed, vooral bij de gedichten van Goethe met een zwierige lyriek en rijm was het heel fijn om de woorden ook in de oorspronkelijke taal te kunnen lezen. Daardoor kreeg ik er meer gevoel bij. Wat me ook beviel waren de aantekeningen van de vertalers waarbij ze uitleg geven over sommige door Goethe gebruikte mythische figuren, begrippen en symbolen. Dat scheelt enorm in het begrijpen van een gedicht.
Niet dat alles wat ik las me beviel. Nee, wel zijn liefdeswerk en zelfs zijn humor, wat ik niet achter hem had gezocht. "Rusteloze liefde" en "Nachtlied van de zwerver" sprongen eruit, voor mij althans.
