The first major and comprehensive English- language commentary on Hebrews in over fifty years. Presents a balanced and richly documented interpretation.
Harold W. Attridge, Ph.D., is Dean of Yale University Divinity School and Lillian Claus Professor of New Testament. He has published many scholarly contributions to New Testament exegesis and to the study of Hellenistic Judaism and the history of the early Church. He also has served as the president of the Society of Biblical Literature.
Update April 2013: Have to up the rating to 5. Using this to work through Hebrews again and it is just so excellent and more useful for the teaching than I gave it credit for before.
Attridge's commentary on Hebrews was described to me as the only commentary I would need by a friend who should know (teaching New Testament and all). Technically and historically it is wonderful and concise, not bogged down with apparatus, and entirely straightforward (and the book itself is handsome). What it is missing is much in the way of pastoral concern. The scholarship is wonderful, the help in teaching more minimal.
Professor Attridge does a great job dealing with the background and source material; but never seems to venture an opinion on what anything means. This makes it a valuable academic resource; but with no appeal outside of that realm.
