The classic Scott Morse (SOULWIND) graphic novel finally returns to print When a woman having a crisis of conscience enters a church seeking guidance, a kindly priest uses a newspaper to show her examples of a divine hand guiding our lives. Only he discovers that humanity is more connected than even he realized, as her terrible secret comes to light. Presented in sepia-tones, VISITATIONS is a must-have for any graphic connoisseur.
Scott Morse (sometimes known as C. Scott Morse or C. S. Morse) is an American animator, filmmaker, and comic book artist/writer.
Much of Morse's published work consists of stand-alone graphic novels, although he is perhaps best known for his epic series Soulwind, a story serialised in a sequence of graphic novels, which was nominated for both the Eisner and Ignatz awards.
This slim volume certainly packed a punch, right up to the very end. The frame and the three stories each are very brief and to the point, much like a blurb in the newspaper. It's not until the last story that it all ties together. I’m normally a cry-baby for stories like this, and I can usually see them coming from a mile away, but Visitations took me by surprise. While many may think this is a Christian book, according to Morse (in the Preface), this isn't; it's a book about the slender divide between the unknowable spiritual world and the knowable physical one. It will appeal to the religious and the secular alike.
This book was SO short and easy to read! I bet it only took me ten minutes to get through.Even though it is short, it's GOOD. Morse did a good job of conveying how emotional the female protagonist is. The shapes, design, and layout are all fantastic.
Quick and easy to read, eerie, touching, tragic and gorgeous in every way. A tale and character study that questions morality, spirituality and life after death. Pretty heavy stuff for such a short book, let alone for one that features such innocent and attractive artwork.
