The legends were wrong. King Arthur and his knights were never the good guys...
I’m not the first Guinevere in my family line, or even the tenth. I’m just the newest one. I’m not special. Everyone I know has abandoned me, except Grandma Gwenny, who raised me. And now she’s gone, too.
When my beloved grandma’s final act leads me on a wild hunt across oceans, I never imagined I'd end up in the mythical realm of Camelot.
Except this Camelot isn’t like any of the legends I’ve read about. It’s dark, dangerous, depraved. The land is cursed. Rebellion is afoot. King Arthur and his knights are wicked brothers… and these brothers share everything.
A girl could get lost here. Hell, I might want to get lost here.
I was brought to Camelot for a reason. Ancient prophecies say I’m more special than I thought. But what do I do when the legendary Knights of the Round Table are more villainous than the bad guys?
I should want to leave, but this place is too seductive. I’m a prisoner in this realm of sin… Do I embrace the darkness?
Author’s Note: Realm of Sin is a steamy retelling of Arthurian myths. This dark fantasy romance features multiple morally gray love interests, tons of touch-her-and-perish vibes, swordplay (of all kinds), and a heroine who refuses to be chained… unless she’s into it.
KC Kingmaker lives in San Diego and has been writing and reading fantasy and romance for years.
"Briarwitch Academy" was KC’s first foray into paranormal romance, trying to bridge the genres to make something steamy, funny, mysterious, action-packed, and most of all, fun!
"Dragon Shifter Dominion" came after, trying to meld that same steaminess with traditional fantasy, to create a romantic fantasy explosion!
"Shadowblade Academy," KC’s third series, is technically a spin-off of Briarwitch Academy, though it can be read as a standalone series. It has just as much intrigue and mystery and steam as the others, but things get a bit darker.
"Camelot Untold," KC’s fourth series, is a deep, dark dive into the rich lore of Arthurian legends. It’s reverse harem fantasy romance.
"Robin Hood and Her Merciless Men" is KC’s fifth series, and another spicy, dark retelling of an iconic legend.
First off, this book absolutely lives up to the title, this truly is a sinful realm. Second, the trigger warnings are there for a reason, HEED THEM!!!
I am someone who really likes having trigger warnings in books, even though I tend to skip over them most of the time (I luckily have very few triggers). For this one I actually read them, and yup be very mindful, they're all very present in the book.
I'd like to point out the SA one because I know some of my friends have this as a trigger. There's two scenes like that in the book, the first is in one of the beginning chapters and the second near the very end.
For that second one I wasn't sure if Guin would be saved (I hoped she would, but you never know) or not and as it was approaching I was like "you know what, I'm good, I don't need to know what happens" and closed the book.
This lasted a few seconds, then I was like I NEED to know how it ends, but I went and played my silly little pie merge game to mentally prepare myself for what may or may not happen in the next few pages.
REMEMBER TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH FRIENDS!!!
Then I opened the book again and finished it and I am glad I did. Especially because I had a theory about Domino, and I was going to say that I think it's probably a character that hasn't made an appearance in the book.
But KC proved me wrong on both who Domino is, AND the character not appearing in this one. Well played KC, well played.
Moving on to happier themes, this is, I'm pretty sure, THE smuttiest book I've ever read. Fitting the title should go to a RH novel.
BUT! Despite the steamy scenes around every corner, Realm of Sin has an excellent plot!!! I'm used to that with this author so it's no surprise, but still. If you thought this was just mindless smut THINK AGAIN!!
I said in one of my reading updates that Mordred was my favourite Arthurian legend character, THIS DID NOT CHANGE, NOT FOR A SECOND. My precious baby is the best of them all!!! I'm still sorry to Arthur, Gawain, Percival and Kay, you guys are amazing too, but you can't beat him.
Is it appropriate to say that I love Domino too? I KNOW SOME OF YOU ARE PROBABLY GOING "of course you do" BUT I CAN'T HELP IT, I LOVE VILLAINS.
“Come with me, bridge between worlds.”
AAAAAAHH *swoons*. It's funnier when you know who it is, just trust me, read the book and then come back to my review, you'll get a kick out of it.
Now let me circle back to that one character that I thought wouldn't appear. When Guin was transported to Camelot and started meeting people left and right, I was waiting for this character to jump out of wherever it was they were hiding. They didn't, and I began to lose hope that we'd ever see them.
Then there was a line King Arthur said once, it's easy to miss if you're not paying attention, but that line gave me hope that the character would appear eventually. I just didn't think it would be in this book. But I'm glad it was.
I ONLY NEED TO KNOW IF THEY HAVE CURLY BLACK HAIR, IT'S VITAL TO MY EXISTENCE BECAUSE OF THAT ONE POEM. My favourite poem actually. So please KC, curly black hair for you know who. Pretty please.
Did I mention there's also a fairy realm? I'm hoping we'll get to see it, and I think I know already who dwells there.
Which in turn reminds me, FATA MORGANA! I have, oddly enough, never seen those words used in a book or cartoon or movie in English, I swear they always say mirage and I'm like NO, SAY FATA MORGANA, IT'S WAY BETTER. I didn't even need to shout at KC through my screen though, I'm happy.
*Thank you to the amazing author who provided me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review*
I've read my fair share of dark fantasy with a lot of questionable characters and plots, but this is just... no.
Regarding the FMC and her arc, this is an FYI to anyone who reads this book: Women can be submissive AND strong. They can love and enjoy any kind of sex without sacrificing their bodies, self-respect, and intelligence and they certainly have more to them than what this author brings to the table.
I'm disappointed because the story itself was promising, but the male characters were just all the same with zero reedeming qualities and they just degrade this poor woman in every way possible, aside from the steam and smut, and she happily just takes it. Not cool.
The view on women, despite it being set in the Dark Ages, is troubling. I think it's ridiculous that a modern woman travels back in time and is then just complacent and satisfied with men treating her like property. It once again feeds into the many stereotypes that women have nothing more to offer than their bodies. I mean, even the training scenes, where the FMC is supposed to learn how to fight, always ended up with her pleasing the males physically in one way or another. Also, the lack of female enjoyment, attention to female pleasure and the disregard of aftercare, really irked me. I've read plenty of darker books that manage to have these kinds of elements and the gritty/kinky stuff, without it taking away from the story. It's all about balance.
If you are going to write a book like this, with this much dark and heavy steam, then you need to have solid characters that showcase growth and have complex emotions. This book doesn't have any of that.
Before I go deeper into the review, thank you to the author for approaching me and sending me this book in exchange for an independent and honest review. A special mention to the cover. Is so beautiful!
Realm of Sin is quite an intense book and as the title suggests, sinful. Before reading this book two important notes: This is a dark RH/ why choose book so if that is not your cup of tea, don’t read this book Check the trigger warnings , seriously check them and only read this book if you are ok with them.
This book is a dark retelling of King Arthur and his knights and fair warning, the book starts with a bang and kind of sets the tone for what is waiting for you. The book follows Guinevere. She is struggling in life in the modern world and after a series of events she ends in Camelot, where the land is cursed and the inhibitions are very low or nonexistent . This book is heavy in smut and spicy scenes but the plot is also there with plot twists and ending in a cliffhanger (hello stranger... I thought you wouldn’t say hi in this book😏) Also…I have hopes for Mordred…I know…I know but I do.
⚜️Read this book if you like:
▪️King Arthur Retelling ▪️Why Choose/ RH ▪️Enemies to Lovers ▪️Morally Grey Anti-Heroes ▪️Sword Crossing ⚔️ ▪️Dark Fantasy Romance ▪️Found Family ▪️Touch her and you 💀 ▪️MM / MFM / MMF
⚜️What I really enjoyed:
🗡️The Plot: Guin finds herself in the middle of Camelot, the legends she have read are not quite what she finds is going around and does not know who she can trust and who is only using her. I enjoyed the multiple POV and the development of some characters. The world building is good and it makes it easy to follow the story and get immersed in it. However, this is a big book and requires time. I found it a bit slow paced. If you like political intrigue and a bit of mystery with a curse floating around. This book won’t disappoint. They are looking for the Holy Grail, fighting a rebellion, betrayals and unexpected friendships. And a fairy realm!
Guin is sassy and funny and made me laugh with her sense of humour. Arthur and his knights are handsome, cruel to match their hard exterior and the cruelty they survived but they have a good heart.
Some of the smut and the R/H dynamics. Some of the TW are degradation and objectifying and that goes into the dynamics between certain characters. To be completely honest I did skim read those scenes. I did also rolled my eyes a bit with certain sex scenes and the use of “big 🍆”. As much as I like a good steamy scene, some of them weren’t for me as well as the language or description of those scenes.
Overall, I gave it 3.5 ⭐️ and I did enjoy the book. I was waiting for certain character to make his appearance and really liked it when he did. Also, my favourite knight…aka, Mordred…🤫🤫can’t tell you.
▪️Would I like to read book 2? Absolutely, I need to know what will happen and if some characters are protected at all costs. Also, I want the steamy scene we didn’t have…IYKYK ▪️Would I say this book is for everyone? No. I really recommend checking TW and to check with yourself your red flags. ▪️What would have given this book more stars? I think this book could be better with a faster pace and a little less smut. “Why?” you may ask… I am a big fan of romantasy and the key part of me loving those books is a good balance between steamy scenes and plot. Sadly, I had some moments reading this book where I felt that this was not the case and I did not want another sex scene and instead a bit more action/ plot.
nope. the writing is bad. every page is just jarring to me. i get wanting to write a depraved, dark camelot but this felt cheap. i just kept rolling my eyes 😭 i was intrigued at first but i genuinely cannot stand the writing or the way the fmc is written.
sigh, guess my quest to find a good arthur/merlin retelling in romance continues
Wow!!! All my dark fantasy lovers who need something deliciously spicy with no inhibitions….then this is it friends. THIS IS IT.
>> Knights of the Round Table >> Debauchery >> Sword Crossing >> Why Choose- So much sharing >> Correction- Hot Knights of the Round Table >> Cursed Land >> Portal Fantasy >> Fast Paced >> Found Family
I loved this story- it really has it all. The characters were perfect, like really am I slightly jealous of snoop/little lamb/lady of the bridge/mistress- probably.
Not for the faint of heart; check your triggers because this quite literally starts with a bang- literally.
Highly recommend this to my spicy fantasy loving friends.
Many thanks to the author for sending me a copy. All thoughts are my own 🖤
Oh my...this was filthy! When I first saw the book I thought "aw cute little romantasy" at first. Let me tell, ain't nothing cute or little about this. In here you will find a fast paced plot, many spicy scene and an RH romance. There are some action scenes and a few plot twists as well. A few things that irked me was the "she's not like other girls" and the weird "body standard" set for men in this (come on, are we still doing those things!?) Otherwise it was a bit weird but also weirdly addictive
The Knights of the Round Table are mine, and I am theirs. I’ve become part of Camelot, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
AHHHHHDKEJSJDHJS
Oh my lanta this was delicious! A friend and I were recently discussing the fact there aren’t enough Arthurian legend books. And then an ARC of this fabulous gem literally lands in my inbox the next day. This is the WHY CHOOSE of King Arthur and his knights we never asked for but received anyway.
This book was a page-turner!! I wasn’t quite sure I was going to like it after the initial chapter however the spin on Guinevere entering Camelot completely seized my attention for the remainder of the story. Fair warning: heed the TWs!! This is a dark romance with quite a few triggers that y’all should be aware of.
When I read this, I came in with an open mind thinking that WE ARE ENTERING THE MEDIEVAL AGES, so I really didn't think of hygiene. This book is definitely not for everyone. Not everyone middle ages we're chivalrous AF, ok. So here are my thoughts.
I did enjoy the book for what it was cause it was a bit refreshing from what I usually read despite issues of hygiene, and yes, there is misogyny cause, well, like I said, not everyone is a hot knight, and there is a lot of Debauchery everywhere that I can promise you. I am not saying that this book is Historically correct.
We have Gueniverre from the present, who lost her Granny Guenny and left her with a small inheritance or something. Plus, with respect to her, she is going to spread her ashes in a place in the UK. Boom, she time-traveled to Camelot! I was very entertained by the book.
The book was a bit predictable when it comes to the antagonist, but I will definitely read the next book for the Camelot/Arthurian smut. It's definitely smutty, and holy shit! Who would've thought that King Arthur was such a daddy dom?
Wow, what a fun ride this book was! Nothing beats a fantasy romance with sexy, broody, “touch her and die” men that know how to make a women 😮 (lol 😂) This why choose book will make you drool over every single man for different reasons, and sometimes at the same time 🤤
Make sure to check your TW, as this book does get a little dark. It is full of steam, plot, adventure, mystery and banter. You will fall in love with the FMC and probably a few of the MMC’s too! 😉
KC Kingmaker did not disappoint with this intriguing Camelot retelling. I can’t wait to see where the story goes in the next book. I’ll be patiently (more likely impatiently) waiting for book 2 while dreaming of sexy King Arthur and his Knights of Camelot.
Disclaimer: the end does leave on a cliff hanger (but not a deadly one, in my opinion).
* REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS * I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
The following are ratings out of 5: Spice: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 World-Building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌏 Character Development: 🥱😧😏😊😍 Story/Plot: book: 📔📕📘📗📙
🖤 King Arthur Retelling 🖤 Why Choose? 🖤 Enemies to Lovers 🖤 Morally Grey Anti-Heroes 🖤 Sword Crossing ⚔️
The Story/Plot: Guin is living like a shadow in her current life, but when her grandmother passes away and leaves Guin to fulfill her final request, Guin suddenly finds surrounded by darkness of a different nature.
Guin finds herself in the middle of King Arthur's court, along with his closest knights of the round table. The world around Camlot is not the pristine nature as told in myths and fairytales, but rather dilapidated and fully of debauchery.
Strengths: The characters were each well developed and had unique personalities, and KC Kingmaker gave us a chance to meet each of them through the multiple POVs. The world building was great, and I was really able to immerse myself in it. And I won't even get started on the smüt - it was damn bear a chef's kiss!
Weaknesses: Though I definitely enjoy a good Why Choose, I do like the characters to have some one on one time, but as this is book one, I have high hopes for the subsequent books. This was an ARC read, and I did still note a couple of grammar/editing errors, but this could have just been the version I received.

Very smuty King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table retelling. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
I enjoyed my time but I have to be honest that I only enjoyed it because of the hot sex scenes. Unfortunately the plot of the book didn't convince me. There was no emotional connection between Guin and the Knights. They were fucking like rabbits and it was hot but I needed more. More explanation, more connection between the characters and definitely more purpose for Guinnewire's story. I didn't understand what her role was this whole time. Except for being a love interest.
It didn't make sense to me why all of the knights and Arthur will be immediately so invested in Guin. And honestly I need her to be more bad ass.
So to conclude, if you want very smutty sexy time retelling of King Arthur and are not bothered by plot holes/convince, pick this up and enjoy the ride. 😏
Includes: Reverse Harem Sword crossing - very hot 🌶️👌 MF/MFM/MMF/MMFMM Sex scenes Breath play/Choking Anal sex Being used kink Restraining Spanking Dirty dirty talk and degradation
I really had high hope for this. I love time/realm travel and Camelot is one of my favorite stories. Of course when classic stories are turned into smut you have to leave room for change. However, with this book the changes didn’t work for me.
I kept waiting for Guin to have a backbone but it never really happened. The guys were just confusing. Was this supposed to be a bully romance or an enemies to lovers type thing? Because the guys were all over the place. Very little was taken from the original material which to me makes me wonder. If you’re only going to take the names and a little of the backstory why not just forgo to names and write a completely different story? That way readers don’t have any expectations.
Guin leads with her libido and it’s exhausting. Don’t get me wrong I love spicy scenes but a lot of the ones in here just made me cringe because they just come out of nowhere and many of them just made the story line seem pointless. I can’t remember who’s said it but I read somewhere that “sex is a perk, not the point” so while the sex is an important part of smut, the story needs to flow and be the main focus. Otherwise just call it erotica. Maybe that’s just how my mind sees it.
The world building was ok that was probably the best aspect of this book.
!!PLEASE READ THE LIST OF TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS BOOK BEFORE READING!! THIS IS A DARK FANTASY ROMANCE AND THE CONTENT WITHIN REFLECTS THAT.
If Dark Fantasy Romance is not for you then it is best that you sit this one out. However if you, like me, enjoy dark fantasy romance then you should totally check this one out!
We start off with Guinevere finding out that her Grandma Gwenny has died and left a message for her. Upon receiving the message she finds out her grandmother is leaving pretty much everything to her, but in order to receive it she has to accept the all expense paid flight to the UK and attend her funeral and even leaves her an ancient...and expensive looking goblet to entice Guinevere into accepting. Of course she accepts and of course upon receiving more strange instructions from her grandmother's last wishes she carries them out only to find herself not in the England she knows anymore and being given a cryptic message from a soaking wet lady who appears out of nowhere in the river. She finds herself far far FAR from home in a land through time plagued by a magical rot, depraved bandits, and the deadly Knights of the Round Table. It truly is a Realm of Sin out there...
When we say this book is spicy, we mean SPICY, PREPARE THYSELF (lol) but like I said earlier, read those trigger warnings people. Pairings you can expect are: M/M. M/F. M/M/F. M/M/F/M/M My only complaint here was that Guinevere's emotional connection to Arthur felt lacking in the development of them being in love with each other seemingly out of nowhere....in lust, yes, in fact hell yes! but the love? I wasn't convinced as some of the other connections felt more emotionally developed.
Now, even though the spice is spicin and there is Debauchery galore, we still have a good main story line of a secret group rebelling against King Arthur and blaming him and his father Uther for everything that has gone wrong in the Camelot, including the magical rot, and it seems one of Arthur's inside trusted Knights has betrayed him...the question is, which one? Arthur has asked Guinevere to be his eyes and ears on his knights to possibly provide some outside insight on the men in his brotherhood.
overall I was here for both the story and the smut and neither disappointed! Also, THAT ENDING I WAS WAITING AND WAITING FOR IT! I'm excited to see other well known characters popping up in book two! All in all I think this one was a 4.5 for me.
I was so excited for this book: a dark WC Arthurian retelling with a promise of sword crossing; 😈 sign me up! Unfortunately, the execution fell flat.
The pacing of this book is odd. Things I want more detail of are glossed over (The Rot that took over the kingdom, the disappearance of magic, etc) with no explanation while we get constant drawn-out passages of mundane or repetitive things. This book could have definitely been quite a bit shorter and still accomplished everything it was trying to.
There are also several things that simply didn't belong in this book (mentions of pavement and elastic on her armor took me out of the medieval time period) or were just completely unbelievable (a MMC was somehow able to create the FMC a full suit of armor in a week while still carrying out his other duties 🧐 and every time there was an 🍑🍆 scene and no 💦 of any kind was utilized I found myself rolling my eyes). 🙄
The FMC also has almost no positive interactions with any female characters and repeatedly comments how women are shallow and catty. There's nothing I hate more than women hating women for absolutely no reason. 😤 There is one very brief scene over 75% of the way into the book with a chambermaid and Guin comments that she may have made a friend, other than that, total sausage fest.
The "surprise" ending is also incredibly apparent of you're at all familiar with Artharian legend (something our FMC is not despite being named Guinevere, along with every other woman in her family, and her figuring out the identity of the rebel leader was far fetched and unbelievable).
I did enjoy her connection with Percival and wanted to find out more about his background (I feel like he may be part fae 👀), as well as figuring out how her grandmother fit into this equation. Unfortunately I don't think my curiosity for a handful of things is going to draw me back enough to check out the next book.
Thank you so so much to the author for sharing a copy of this book with me !!!

I don’t think words can describe how good this book was !!!!! First and foremost a King Arthur retelling … which I am a massive fan of. Second a why choose romance that has them all : enemies to lovers, morally grey men, touch her and die, swords crossing, portal fantasy, cursed land. Third the KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE … THEY ARE SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY !!!! I don’t know which one of them I love more !!!! To be completely honest with you … I’m an Arthur girlie through and through but seeing the dynamics involving Sir Kay, Percival and Gawain too … let’s just say that you get more than a little bit satisfied , if you know what I mean. Intrigues, fighting, tension, frustration and SOOOOO SPICY !!!!!! This is a version of the myth and legend you were not expected in a version of Camelot where sins run free and only Guinevere can reverse a terrible curse cast on the land. With a grandma involved that has secrets and lead her granddaughter with a bizarre quest, Guinevere finds herself in between the knights of the round table and their dynamics (some more spicy and interesting than the other) !!!! Each and everyone of them has its own unique way of being: Kay was drunk and rough and a mouthful. Parcival was sweet and insecure. Gawain was violent, commanding. But Arthur … well you’ll get some surprises from the great King you won’t be expecting !!! That ENDING THOUGH !!!! Great betrayals and character reveals and some new characters that I am very looking forward to meet !!!!! I sooo can’t wait for the next book in this series !!!!
“Yes, mistress,” he says with a nod, “welcome to our realm of sin. Welcome to Camelot.”
“Sometimes the people most reluctant to wield power are the ones most suited for it, dear.”
“The Knights of the Round Table are mine, and I am theirs. I’ve become part of Camelot, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Filthy absolutely filthy fun. I have enjoyed every minute of this mess. Easy fun read even if you don’t catch all the call backs to legend. Racing to book two!!
This was really underwhelming. I really adore Camelot retellings as a general rule but this just feels like generic Motorcycle Club smut with a Ye Olden Times Castle for a clubhouse. There doesn't seem to be an emotional arc to the story or emotional connections amongst the characters. There is a ton of spicy scenes but they tend to fall flat because the characters are so loosely drawn, and frankly, mostly annoying.
I love the idea of a smutty retelling of the knights of the round table and Camelot, so this was seriously disappointing.
This book was terrible. Repetitive phrases and descriptions used over and over. Told from multiple characters points of view, but I consistently had to go back to the beginning of the chapter to see who was narrating because all the characters were written the same, even though the FMC is from modern times and the MMCs are from fantasy medieval times. Don't get me started on the idiotic FMC, who thinks she can suddenly be a knight after 2 swordfighting training sessions that turned into sex sessions before she learned anything of use and continuously puts herself in danger.
I might be able to excuse the poor writing and characterization, but the content was far worse. Tons and tons of non-consensual sex, anal sex without any type of lube, and downright dangerous "bdsm" without any communication or discussion of boundaries. Yuck.
And what do you get when you combine bad writing and bad smut? Quotes like this one, which I wish I could unread: "Ropes of cum shoot from his piss slit, splattering over my tunic." I wish I could tell you that phrase was only used as a descriptor of a penis once in this book, but unfortunately I would be lying. This author seems to think that "piss slit" is a common moniker used by modern women and medieval knights alike.
I cannot tell you what compelled me to finish this book. At least I got a few good laughs from the pure ridiculousness of it all.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Realm of Sin is not your Mama’s King Arthur. Nope. This is a pure smutty, crazy medieval, falling back in time, fun ride of a ‘fairytale’ and wow was it good. Right off the bat, I’m going to talk about the spice level of this novel. . .it is scorchingly hot. If you don’t like your smut with a side of story then this is not the book for you, but if you’re in the mood for some crazy pairings in a world with no inhibitions, then come on in and enjoy the ride. Sword-crossing and orgy are guaranteed.
I super liked this book, it’s just pure fun to see how K.C. Kingmaker dumped the legend of King Arthur on its head and rewrote it in such a fun and engaging way. When Guen’s grandmother dies, it sends her on a trip to England that will forever drastically alter the trajectory of her life. Because let me tell you when she goes into the river, she doesn’t not come out in her time. The time travel aspect is a blast and half, I loved seeing Guen go from struggle to struggle and yet not break beneath it but flourish. Some characters would balk at being in a whole new world while Guen just buckles up for the ride and embraces where she is and what’s happening to her.
This is not how I’ve ever seen King Arthur and the Knights of the round table portrayed. The debauchery and brokenness of the land and its people is overwhelming but maybe with a little magic and a little Guen, life can become a bit more than the rot that permeates the land. The ending was completely unexpected - I literally did not see who or what coming but I’m super stoked to see what happens in the next book.
If you like retellings with a whole lot of spice, you’ll love this one. With great characters that are as flawed as they are intriguing, found-family aspects, and a medieval world worth investing in, I dare you to meet Guen and not get swept away on her journey.
“There’s a sensation I get when I lay eyes on her. The visceral need to protect and defend aches in my bones.”
Thank you K.C. Kingmaker + Paper Myths for an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for an honest review
just fell to my knees I can't believe I have to wait for the second book to come out. this probably would have been five stars but guin was annoying sometimes and some parts of the writing were definitely choices
I am not sure how this book had such good reviews. The spice is there if that’s what you are looking for but the writing and the story line are terrible. Will not be continuing with book 2 when it’s released
Four and a half stars, rounded to 5. Realm of Sin was my 12th read of 2023 and was a physical ARC read.
It is a dark King Arthur re-telling and is the first book in the series.
This book is a romantasy that is heavy (and I mean 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒚) in the spice department. There are also multiple trigger warnings that the author lists at the beginning, so be sure to check them out before reading.
Now, I'm telling you right now - the spice was a 5🌶️ (still more plot than spice) as this was a RH/Why choose book, which I did know going in, but even then I was totally unprepared! 😅
🩷 I'm going to base my STAR rating SOLELY on the story line, because some of the spice was not to my taste, (so normally that would bring my rating down quite a bit,) HOWEVER, I did find the plot intriguing and now I'm fully invested and need to read book 2 to find out what happens, and I don't want a lower star rating to deter people from reading the book, thus, my stars are for the PLOT, action/humour and not including the spice. 🩷 If anyone wants to ask questions or discuss why I left the spice out of the star ratings and rated the plot instead, feel free to PM me. 😊
4.5⭐ (Spice not included) ~ Loved this spin on the King Arthur tale. The Cursed lands add extra intrigue and I NEED to know if they are able to do what they need to do to break it - I don't want to spoil it for you. Also, that ending! I wondered when that particular character would show up and he appeared riiiiiight at the end, so of course now I have to read book 2 because I have soany questions!! 4.5🌶️ ~ This is a dark, RH/why choose series, geared towards adult/18+ readers. I had to skim over some of the spice because there were points where I was like 😳😲😅, but, I KNOW some of you out there will be thirsty for it, which is also why I didn't want to reduce the star rating just because my spice preference is a bit different than what was in the book. You've been warned. 4🗡️ ~ There are battles, there are competitions, there is outright murder. Blood, organs, etc... Again, dark book so read the trigger warnings and be prepared for some gore. 2.5😂 ~ There were quite a few moments where I chuckled at some lines. (Gawain's "The fuck did I do?" Had me giggling.)
🩷 All in all, I feel like it's a great start to a new series, even if there are elements that I don't favour.
◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦
⮞ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 ⮜ Guinevere is half your lady in distress but also not your lady in distress. She's definitely overly reckless and has issues with authority which is understandable in this book, it makes things a lot more spicier when the girl doesn't comply with everything. Even from the beginning, she made me laugh and I've saved some quotes from them because sometimes I was like "girl, same" King Arthur and his knights let's say each one is unique and has their own characteristics, they're all very big, if you know what I mean :).
⮞ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⮜ The world-building isn't the main focus, you won't find the most elaborate world and it's environment, but the information offered helps you understand where you are and how things look around you and especially the difference between her world and the world she ended up into. I loved the details offered, they definitely showed me the bigger picture - especially in the town where lots of stuff were happening.
⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜ I liked how easy the book was to read. I legit do not remember when I finished it, it just went so smoothly. I loved the fact it made me giggle and smile so many times because so many things were just hilarious and if you go into this book thinking to read something very serious - don't! Go into reading this book without expectations and you'll be surprised. I've enjoyed the puns used in the book and also the choice of words with double meanings. Dagonet the character who I'm pretty sure I would've loved to be his friend because he was such a character. And also the sarcasm was just perfect, especially when not everyone was catching on to it. This was also the first time when I've read reverse harem and I've enjoyed it a lot, I actually loved the way the relationship between the knights was developing with Guinevere. What I wasn't a very big fan of it was that the plot twist wasn't as wow as I was expecting it to be, especially when we figure out who the "bad guy" is. I was a bit disappointed in that because it was this crescendo of events and that important moment just felt flat to me, didn't have the impact I was expecting it to be. I am still invested in the story and I want to read the next one.
⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜ The book lives up to its title. It is the Realm of Sin. It is raunchy, filthy, and very, very, very spicy. There are also a couple of triggers so make sure to read the list provided by the author right at the beginning of the book. There is strong language, strong subjects, and a lot of sex, considering is a reverse harem and is the Realm of Sin you can imagine that there is nothing (I think) that hasn't been explored in this world. I am pretty sure this has been the most spicy book I've ever read and I've enjoyed it a lot!
