My Dearest Reader,When you hear my story, perhaps you will think me a man unable to control his own hungers…his own temptations. But I warn you that I am no such thing. I am simply a man who knows what he wants, and what he can't live without. It is only fair to tell you that my clan is one descended from magic. I have learned these powers are both a blessing and a curse--for the magic that flows through my blood controls my fate utterly and completely. When I first saw the beautiful Loris, I knew she was my unoliaeth, my oneness, the woman I am destined to unite with for all eternity. At that moment, I allowed my passion to lead me to do the I employed a forbidden magic to win Loris's heart. How did I know that my error would lead to a black curse that still haunts me today? How could I have known that the curse would irrevocably cast Loris' affection for me to another man?Now I am left to ponder how I might win Loris back--black curse be damned. I believe there must be a way. For while it is the darkest realms of magic that keeps Loris from becoming mine, there is another power at the undying, unending love of one man for one woman. And I pray that in the end, that will be enough…Your obedient servant,Kian Seymour , Castle Tylluan, London

When I was a senior in high school, everyone in my graduating class was asked to fill out a questionnaire supposing where we'd be in ten years' time, what we'd be doing and what our accomplishments would be. I put down that I would be a published author and have written the Great American Novel. I was joking, of course, but I really did want to be a writer. Unfortunately, it was ten years before I actually got the opportunity to put pen to paper, after the birth of my first daughter. I had given up my job as a secretary to be a stay-at-home-mom, and found the long hours of baby sleep time to be a big change from my former busy days. To pass the time and break my increasing addiction to the Home Shopping Network, I at last sat down and took a stab at pursuing that old high school dream. Sixteen years have passed since then and I've had the great joy of writing several romances and seeing them published. I may never get around to writing the Great American Novel, but it doesn't really matter. I'm writing books that I love and having the time of my life doing it, and that's an accomplishment that this former high school senior is perfectly content with.
As for the more specific information, I live in a great small town in the Los Angeles suburbs, am married to a wonderful guy, Paul, and have three gorgeous, brilliant (can you tell I'm just a tad bit biased?), fabulous daughters, two terribly spoiled (by me) dogs, and a pampered, long-suffering cat.
This is Malachi's heir's story. Ten years ago, when Kian was 17, he killed an evil man at a dockside tavern brawl using Magic... it was just a little magic but still magic... and the man broke his neck and so the Guardians punished him with a blood curse. While he was trying to save the life and would~be 'fate worse than death' of Loris (who was sold by her tavern keeper employer to the procurer of the flesh trade) hence the rescue that went awry... Kian was also saving the 13~year~old girl who was his "unoliaeth" or his Oneness... his other half to make him Whole or make both of them One. For 10 years Kian was not able to break the curse (though he tried) and Loris bore its pain... for everytime they touch, Loris would feel the pain... after every kiss... after every caress... but Kian found a magical nocturnal temporary solution to give them time to get to know each other... he became her night time friend and confidant. It is here that Dyfed, Kian's twin, would also find his own "unoliaeth" in a sort of weird twist of fate that was ironical in a tragic way for some... also the 2 blood curses from the previous books would be lifted. A very Enthralling read.
Kian may be living under a curse but that has not stopped him from loving and adoring Loris from afar. While she may not replicate his feelings or believe they are fated for each other, Kian finds little ways to be near her. They bicker like cats and dogs but late at night, he takes the form of another man and Loris accepts him into her bed. Sure, it’s deceitful but it’s the only way they can touch without it causing Loris a burning pain.
Loris found happiness and a sense of safety living amongst the Seymour family as an adoptive daughter. Her life in London before was full of pain and suffering, which is why she does not want to go back. However, when given the chance to be united with her long-lost Grandfather, Loris reluctantly agrees to make the trip. Plus, Kian wants her gone while he deals with a monster plaguing their small Welsh village. And she’s still reeling from the discovery that her midnight lover was Kian all along.
While spending time along side the people in society London, Loris begins to truly find herself. No longer running from the past and finally accepting Kian affections.
This book was oddly paced and I’m not sure I entirely LOVED it. There was the aspect of unrequited love and I could truly feel Kian’s pain each and every time Loris gently dismissed him. She wasn’t cruel but neither was she willing to blindly accept his claim of them being fates, especially considering she herself had no magic abilities. I found her very level headed and rational in the face of Kian betrayal as she knew in her heart that her lover had been Kian all along.
My issue, we’ll call it, was with the many many subplots in this novel that distracted me from Kian and Loris’s story. The Monster, the sorcerous in love with Kian’s brother- the rival magical family. And the fact that for the majority of the book, Kian and Loris were not together. All of a sudden, after spending so much energy to reject Kian, Loris finds herself in love with Kian. Just like that. All because she was no longer with him. It was a stretch.
While this might not have been the best in the series- I’m still sad to know there’s only 3 in the series. I could have done with Kian’s brother getting his own story rather than be a sub plot in this one. Plus there’s the rival family’s cousin who deserved his own story.
A story of centuries-old magic with a heavy dose of romance set in historical Wales. Curious yet? Well, the cover illustration sucked me in. It's not your usual romantic book cover with your sexy hero and beautiful damsel. Looking for something different, the photo quality picture of an ancient stone monolith setting (something like Stonehenge) with a sculpted, very male body shadowed in the background stole my attention. Being a most avid fan of anything magical, spiritual, and historical, this illustration foretold a smash-hit hidden in a very understated cover. It became a tale of true and destined love woven and bound together with Harry Potter'ish magic threads. I loved the elements of magic and mystery which made the romance that much more exciting. The sacrifices given by the hero and heroine were tear-inducing and made their story one which truly touched the heart. I thoroughly admired the strength of the heroine. Maybe a little more depth revealed of the hero would have been welcome. It seemed that more of the story was told from the heroine's perspective, and this might be why her character seemed to have more emotions revealed which added more complexity to her character. But who can pass up a totally mesmerizing hero with utter devotion and loyalty to his heroine? Not me! A small side story involving the twin brother and his romantic interest was started, and it seems that it might lead into a second book, but it was too distracting in the midst of the existing story being told. I felt it detracted from the current story and would have been best left out. This being said, this book is a very close favorite for me at 3.75 stars. I will definitely read some of Spencer Paul's other stories, even the twin brother's. :- D
