In August 1944, a squadron of P-51s was on a routine escort mission with the B-17 Bombers over East Germany. After several minutes over the target, mixing it up with the Me-109s and Fw-190s, the bombers headed for home. One Me-109 headed toward one lone cloud with a P-51, flown by Major Lynn on his tail. The other two Mustangs, not far behind Major Lynn, followed. On entering the cloud, all hell broke loose. Time seemed to lose all meaning. Finally, after breaking out on the far side, Major Lynn continued and finally caught and shot down the 109. He watched as he saw the 109 catch fire and the pilot bailed out. His final glimpse was of the Luftwaffe pilot floating to earth. The pilots turned their birds west and head for home. On crossing the Channel and flying to their base, they were amazed to find empty fields….
