Some church problems have been around for thousands of years. The Christians in Corinth had them all: Church splits and cliques - Sexual immorality The role of women in the church - Spiritual gifts Forgiveness - Marriage, divorce, and singleness False doctrines - Living for Jesus in a corrupt world
Not only does the Book of First Corinthians clear away our illusions about the early church, it also shows us God's plan for living in the face of these problems.
This is great general commentary, read with conviction and an understanding of your personal theological understandings of the letter. I disagree with some of what Guzik takes away and in general scholars do not read within the context that he attempts to point out at times. I would definitely recommend if you're doing a study of 1 Cor that you consider using this with the assistance of other commentaries.
Letters that Paul writes should be read within context especially (6-11) ( as should all of the Bible ) without the assistance of first the Holy Spirit we are incapable of understanding God's word. Secondly we must compare our understanding of His word with both our understanding of who he is and what the rest of the Bible says (I have found that in 1 Cor 12-14 this is especially true). If you read anything in scripture and it doesn't align with your understanding of the Father then you must either change how you are reading or what you believe about God to be true. If you read your Bible with conviction then there will be times where both will be necessary.
Pastor David Guzak has a wonderful teaching way that makes understanding the Bible not intimidating but knowledgeable and truthful. After reading 1 & 2 Corinthians, which this is around my fourth time, I pick up something wonderful and this is my second time reading with Pastor Guzak’s commentary, finding something I did mot not fully understand at first. God bless the teachers of the scriptures. It is easy to see how the Corinthians could fall into their pitfuls thinking that the (super duper) preachers looked and sounded better than Paul who was not so polished and had many trials and tribulations, but understanding the need of God’s strength and all Jesus did on the cross is Everything!
This reads easy and is very balanced theologically. I found the treatment of the gifts and end times prophecy as well as descriptions of early churches brought the time to life.
