This was a very good western story. The plot is well developed with several nuanced points of interest that keep the reader wondering what is really going on here; and of course, the only way to find out is to continue reading. The characters are well developed and truly believable. They fit the time period, which is about 10 years after the Civil War. The crux of the story is that two young ladies in Missouri, while out on a pleasure ride, are kidnapped. The girl named Maggie is the primary object of the kidnappers, but they take her friend Susanna also. Maggie’s mother had died within the last few years and on her death bed she confessed to her husband, Henry Rankin, that Maggie was not his biological daughter. She also identified who the actual father was, a man named John Bishop. However, the mother says she never told Bishop about the birth of a daughter. John Bishop never learns of his role as a father until after the kidnapping occurs. It is important to the leader of the kidnappers and the ultimate motive for the kidnapping that both men, the biological father and the father who raised Maggie, pursue the kidnappers as he wants a deadly confrontation with them at a showdown to free the girls. The showdown is to take place at a prechosen location by the boss of the kidnappers. The pursuit team doesn’t know the ultimate location, nor who the kidnapping mastermind is or his motivation for kidnapping Maggie. They can only follow a trail left by the paid gang of thugs who executed the kidnapping duties and are now transporting the girls west. The trail leads west and our two-man pursuit team as well as the kidnappers and the captive girls encounter many dangers and interesting situations on the road west. The mysterious motivation of the kidnapping mastermind places this western yarn a cut above normal western fare.

Another outstanding series of realistic old American western folklore adventures!

Most definitely another five star masterpiece by Mr. Winkle, as he leads his readers through one exciting episode after the other. No slow downs in this fast moving western adventures!
The outstanding storylines will certainly keep his readers turning pages cover to cover! Too, the superbly selective character selections are unsurpassed in their assigned roles, from beginning to end!
As with all of Mr. Winkle's stories I have problem recommending this story to all readers, regardless of you desired reading materials!!!😃

A suspenseful story.

A very suspenseful story filled with many unknowns. A kidnapping followed by a step day and father trying to save them. A plot of vengeance that has been brewing for ten years.

Very good reading

I enjoyed reading this book because it was very entertaining. I liked the way the author had the surprise. It was unexpected but I liked the way it was included in the book. This was a very good book and I can't wait until I read the next book.

This is truly a disappointing book. All the way along the journey to Harper's ranch I kept asking why would someone create such an elaborate plot...and then to have it end up with such a shallow finale. Regretted spending time reading this one.

This was an excellent western story! It was about finding and rescuing two girls who had been abducted and used as bait to bring their rescuer to a craised mad man seeking revenge. It was well written and hard to put down! I would highly recommend it!

good read but predictable….

I enjoyed the read. But it was very predictable, I wonder what happens now? Another man hunting job and then another and another?

Ok

Lots of action, gory details, a overly !omg chase to rescue two girls, and then the end. No epilogue. Feels incomplete.

The best thing I can say about this book is that it is not a romance novel in disguise, as so many supposed westerns are. 2.5
