The Quest for Unity: Orthodox and Catholics in Dialogue : Documents of the Joint International Commission and Official Dialogues in the United States, 1965-1995
Since 1965 Catholics and Orthodox in North America have been engaged in official theological dialogue. This text presents the history and current state of dialogue between the churches, as well as examining what has been accomplished during these decades of dialogue, and which obstacles to full communion still remain.
A good collection of important documents that also server to chart the history of the growth in ecumenical dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox churches. Key documents from the Joint International Commission of the two are presented here (such as documents on common understanding of baptism, Eucharist, ministry, the priesthood, the episcopate, apostolic succession, and pastoral care for Catholic-Orthodox mixed marriages. Also included are other foundational and responsive documents from the U.S. Joint Consultation - the national version of the larger internaional dialogue.
A very helpful resource for those researching in this area, but also a helpful and insightful read for anyone interested in the dialogue. The theological statements certainly represent the fact that dialogue and agreement can arise when the truths of our common faith are articulated in ways that retain the truth while seeking to overcome divisive past formulations.
This is essentially the raw data about the ongoing ecumenical dialogue between the Orthodox and Catholic churches. It's not exactly gripping, but if you are genuinely interesting in what is happening, this is a great resource.
In my personal experience, I wanted a unified historical church after growing up in disjointed, corrupted evangelicalism. It's sad that the Catholic and Orthodox churches are not united, but it was encouraging to find that they are both attempting to make genuine progress.
