“Takeoff” is designed as an introduction to project management. It introduces you to the essential and fundamental elements of project management. It shows you how to plan for a project, conduct a project, and close a project. There are portions of the book that have deeper detail because even as a novice you need to know this information. This is not an advanced project management book. Before you begin reading, you should know that this project management book uses an aviation theme. Why use an aviation theme? First, you may want to know that I flew in the United States Air Force and logged more than 3,200 hours of flying time during my twenty-year career. As I prepared the first portions of this book, I realized that my missions in U.S. Air Force—flying the B-52, for example—fit the PMI definition of a project. I began to examine the similarities further and decided that flying any aircraft is a project and that it would be fun as well as instructive to discuss project management in aviation terms. However, I did not limit myself to aviation examples. Just the opposite. I use whatever examples, stories, and illustrations that best explain the various issues involved in project management. This book will add to your project knowledge from two academic (theory) and practical. I am big on the practical. I believe that project management is a very practical art and science. I want you to succeed—to win! Every part of this book has helpful hints and techniques that have been used with success.
