About the author

Emmy Award winning British Military Historian/Author/ Lecturer who's had the honor of reintroducing many US, British and German veterans to the WWII battlefields where they fought. He lives in Belgium near Antwerp where he spends his most of his time visiting European battlefields.

His voluntary work tracing individual histories has been a labor of love for almost 30 years. He speaks, and has a working knowledge of German Italian Dutch and French. Frequently in demand as a public speaker he has lectured at many British and US colleges, universities and military bases throughout the world. The History Channel hired Martin as a Historical Consultant on their series "Cities of the Underworld". In 2007 he began a new assignment working as a Historical consultant/writer on the hit series 'Greatest Tank Battles', currently the most watched military documentary in the US. Shortly thereafter he accepted an invitation to work as a Presenter/Historical Consultant on the series 'Narrow Escapes' with Bafta Award winning documentary makers WMR.

He is a frequent visitor to the prestigious West Point Military Academy. Widely regarded as a leading authority on European Military History, General Graham Hollands referred to him as the "Greatest living expert on the Battle of the Bulge". Steven Ambrose called him "Our expert in the Ardennes". Fellow writer and notable historian Professor Carlton Joyce said "He really is the best on the Ardennes". His campaigning work for World War Two veterans recently came to attention of some leading military personnel at the Pentagon who cordially invited him to present his latest work there. Awarded 'SERVICES TO EDUCATION' certificates by the USAF and NATO. In 2015 his documentary feature 'Searching for Augusta' received no less than 7 EMMY AWARDS for 'BEST HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARY'. In 2017 his book 'THe Fighting 30th Division - They called them Roosevelt's SS' was nominated in the USA for the 'Prestigious writer Award'. He's also an Honorary Citizen and chosen Cultural Ambassador

Είσαι ποδοσφαιρόφιλος και λατρεύεις την Premier League. Ανοίγεις την τηλεόραση, που δείχνει έναν αγώνα της Τσέλσι για το Αγγλικό πρωτάθλημα ή για το Κύπελλο. Απολαμβάνεις μπαλίτσα, ενώ, βλέποντας πλάνα από τις εξέδρες, ζηλεύεις το ωραίο, πανηγυρικό και ήρεμο κλίμα που επικρατεί, με φιλάθλους και των δυο ομάδων να είναι δίπλα-δίπλα, χωρίς να γίνεται η παραμικρή φασαρία. Ούτε δάδες αναμμένες, ούτε καπνογόνα, ούτε κέρματα/αναπτήρες/μπουκάλια/τσιμεντόλιθοι/θερμοσίφωνες να ρίπτονται στον αγωνιστικό χώρο, ούτε καν υβριστικά συνθήματα, εδώ που τα λέμε.

Ε, λοιπόν, τα πράγματα ήταν εντελώς διαφορετικά πριν κάτι δεκαετίες. Τότε τα Αγγλικά γήπεδα ήταν πεδία μάχης διαφόρων χούλιγκαν και τραμπούκων. Ήταν ευκαιρία για ξέσπασμα, για επίδειξη δύναμης, για εκτόνωση. Έβλεπες ομάδες νεαρών να πηγαίνουν και να καταλαμβάνουν το πέταλο των οπαδών της αντίπαλης ομάδας, οπαδούς να κυνηγιούνται από εξέδρα σε εξέδρα και ακόμα και μέσα στον αγωνιστικό χώρο, με τους περισσότερους εξ αυτών, μετά το τέλος του αγώνα, να μην ξέρουν καν πόσο ήρθε το σκορ. Και, φυσικά, μπόλικο ξύλο έπεφτε και έξω από τα γήπεδα, πριν και μετά τους αγώνες. Και όταν οι οπαδοί της μιας ομάδας "έχαναν" στο ξυλίκι που έπεφτε, δεν περίμεναν την ώρα να ξαναβρεθούν σε τυχόν επαναληπτικό αγώνα, για να πάρουν το αίμα τους πίσω. Και πάει λέγοντας.

Το βιβλίο το γράφει ένας χουλιγκανοπαδός (Hoolifan) της Τσέλσι, που ήταν χωμένος μέσα σ'αυτά τα πράγματα, από τη δεκαετία του '60 μέχρι και τη δεκαετία του '90. Δεν ωραιοποιεί καταστάσεις, δεν χαϊδεύει αυτιά, δεν περηφανεύεται, απλώς λέει τα πράγματα με τ'όνομά τους, περιγράφει με ωμό, γλαφυρό και ρεαλιστικό τρόπο τον κόσμο των Άγγλων χούλιγκαν της εποχής του. Ο αναγνώστης γίνεται μάρτυρας διαφόρων σκηνών βίας, επεισοδίων και τραγελαφικών καταστάσεων εντός και εκτός γηπέδων, και γνωρίζει ένα κάρο απίθανους τύπους, από πραγματικούς αλητόβιους μέχρι τύπους που θα εμπιστευόσουν και τη ζωή σου ακόμα. Η γραφή είναι όσο απλή, γλαφυρή και εθιστική χρειάζεται, για να χαθεί ο αναγνώστης σ'έναν κόσμο τραχύ και, κατά κάποιο τρόπο, συναρπαστικό.

Το βιβλίο είναι σημαντικό για το είδος του, γιατί αναδεικνύει με τον πιο αληθινό και αυθεντικό τρόπο, τις συνθήκες που επικρατούσαν στα Αγγλικά γήπεδα, από τη δεκαετία του '60 μέχρι και τη δεκαετία του '90. Λογοτεχνικά μπορεί και να μην είναι το καλύτερο εκεί έξω, όμως διαβάζεται με ενδιαφέρον από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος και προσφέρει στον αναγνώστη εικόνες και συναισθήματα. Επίσης, θεωρώ ότι έχει πράγματα να προσφέρει για την κατανόηση εκείνων των νεαρών, που μπλέκονται σε καταστάσεις γεμάτες βία και μίσος. Η ελληνική έκδοση πολύ καλή, με προσεγμένη μετάφραση και χρήσιμες σημειώσεις στο τέλος.

Η κουλτούρα του ποδοσφαίρου ήταν ανέκαθεν ένα πολύ σημαντικό στοιχείο της εργατικής τάξης στην αγγλική κοινωνία, με αποτέλεσμα να έχουν γραφτεί για αυτό πάρα πολλά πράγματα, αναλύοντας κυρίως την οπαδική βία από μία κοινωνιολογική σκοπιά. Το Hoolifan κάνει ακριβώς το αντίθετο. Ο Μάρτιν Νάιτ, σκληροπυρηνικός οπαδός της Chelsea, παρουσιάζει μια ωμή και συγκλονιστική μαρτυρία για τον χουλιγκανισμό στα αγγλικά γήπεδα, κυρίως των δεκαετιών του ’70 και του ’80, πολλά χρόνια πριν την έλευση του Αμπράμοβιτς στην ομάδα του Λονδίνου. Στο εν λόγω βιβλίο παρουσιάζεται μια λεπτομερής καταγραφή των γηπεδικών εμπειριών του συγγραφέα, από τις εκδρομές με τα τρένα και τους τσαμπουκάδες με αντίπαλους οπαδούς, μέχρι και τις παράπλευρες κοινωνικές συνθήκες που επηρέαζαν τη γηπεδική αυτή ζωή, όπως η οικογένεια, ο ρατσισμός, ακόμα και η μόδα της κάθε εποχής. Ουσιαστικά το Hoolifan είναι ένα εκ των έσω νοσταλγικό κειμήλιο για την κουλτούρα του ποδοσφαίρου στην Αγγλία των τελευταίων δεκαετιών του 20ου αιώνα, και αποτελεί ένα ιδανικό ανάγνωσμα για όποιον θέλει να καταλάβει τον οπαδισμό αλλά και την εποχή που εδραιώθηκε στην αγγλική κοινωνία.

A ridiculous book my brother made me read about the history of fighting between fans at football games in the 70s/80s.
Honestly what a load of rubbish. The reason I give it a 2 star is because there were times when it did make me laugh but overall just pure baloney.

This was my first book on this subject and althoug it has been years ago that i read it, i still remember it as one of the best books in this genre. The style of writing was better than in most other "hooligan" books and there was also a lot of humour in this. Definetely worthwile if you want to read a good book about this subject, also because it shows the history, how it begun till the more recent history.

If your interested in football hooliganism and football in general this is potentially worth reading. Great insight and depicting of what life was like in the 80s for a football fan. Fascinating to learn how all the tear ups went down at the peak of football hooliganism. Chelsea’s firm has always been top notch and this Martin Knight gives u an exclusive glimpse into the group. His story of him growing up and getting involved I can imagine could be very relatable to some.

Written by a sad little man who seems to think going to a football match to have a fight somehow makes him important.

Glorifies the violence he was involved in - at times it seems just a list of memorable fights he got into. Gives absolutely no insight into football hooliganism. Despite referring to himself as a fan - there is virtually no reference to football matches.
