Three deaths, one connection--the anonymous calls all three women reported in the weeks before they died. Detective Tony Marino wants to close this case before another woman disappears. Especially when he meets a fatherless little boy whose mother is being stalked. Single mom Erin O'Malley tells Tony about her anonymous caller's heavy breathing and unnerving silences. And the feeling of being watched--constantly. Now, after years of thinking he had nothing to offer a wife and child, Tony will do anything to protect the family that feels like his own. Because Erin "is" next on the killer's list.

I automatically pick up a Diane Burke book just because of her name. She knows the suspense genre well and writes a compelling, exciting read. I couldn't put down this book! Well done.
It was a bit slow moving for me and I thought it extremely weird for family/friends to leave someone to be left alone to relax if someone is out to kill them

Here's the thing: when you post some sort of crap paraphrase as your verse (and LIE about what Scripture says)... it sets the tone for the story. "Ye though I walk thru the darkest valley" is *NOT* "Ye though I walk thru the valley of the shadow of death", hello.
Not surprisingly, the story is about a liar. Erin O'Malley says, "I hate cops!" and when her son calls her on her bad attitude, she *LIES* to him and says, "great cops! I said great cops!" LIAR!!!!
She also goes on to ignore him, pass him off on her aunt, whine about how she wants a shower and a nap and a good book and... crap, she forgot she has to take him to a carnival...!!
Then she ignores him at the carnival, he wanders off alone and she's too busy yapping and being Miz All-dat to even notice he's gone...
Even the stalker has her pegged for the self-absorbed, crappy parent that she is. And *WHY* do I want to read about her? *WHY* do I need a neglectful, self-absorbed LIAR on my shelf?

This book is about these misterious calls that keep bugging Carol and Erin. They both have a kid who is either physically or mentally challeged. Erin meets this guy who is a detective his name is Tony. They meet at this easter egg hunt thing. They didnt notice but there was a guy taking pictures of Erin and Carol. Erin's little boy Jack is going to go see the bunny where the detictive is. He sees the bunny and this event is a make a wish kinda thing. and jack goes and sees the bunny and starts talking to tony. Tony askes him what his wish is and by the time Erin gets there jack is telling tony that he wants a daddy for a day. Because the kids are going to disney world. Erin is saying no because she doesnt know the guy and tony knows what its like to not have a dad. but jack gets his wish and tony goes with them while Erin and Tess are in the other bus. So when they get back tony likes erin and erin likes tony but erin doesnt date cops after her husband left because of police duty. so eventually tony is over at their house alot while all these calls keep coming. One day Erin's house gets broken into and she calls the police and tony hers about the call and goes over to her house. they find out that the closet door is broken into and there are pictures of erin with big X's over the pictures. Tony askes if he can come over every once in a while to make sure everything is okay and stuff. Then Carol gets kidnapped. Erin starts to freak out. Everyone is serching for her. but they don't get to her in time. Erin is devistated that was her best friend. They thought they caught the bad guy but they caught the wrong guy. Erin was the next target. Tony got shot while he was leaving erin's house. she thought he was dead but he wasnt. he was in the hospital. Erin said she would never fall in love with another cop/detective but she did. when he was consious she told him how he feels and he feels the same way. the janitor was the clown at jack's party. and the janitor was the killer. The janitor was alone with erin in her house and he started tourchering her. tony barges in the house and they basically save eachothers lives. The janitor gets arrested.
I really like this book. It keeps me wanting to know what happens yet. The one thing im not so okay with is that its creepy. But its really good. It has a big impact on me. It tells me to be careful with what i do on my phone and stuff.
A splendid read indeed! 5 stars all the way... Diane Burke definitely gets my vote for up & coming author about to break into the big time!
After reading Midnight Caller, I can sincerely say that it is a must read for anyone who enjoys authentically real characters complemented by an original storyline that is very creative and totally unpredictable.
What a great story! I am glad I took the time to read this one for sure.
This is a romance with plenty of suspense. I'm not usually a romance fan, but I liked this one. It has its awkward places, but the author is new to writing in this genre. I think she'll improve in time and would be happy to buy a second book.
I loved it. I guessed the end right from the begining though. I knew who was killing everyone. I knew from the moment they metion the kid with aultism why they were killing the women. I just couldn't believe they killed Carol. I loved Carol. Loved the meesage and the verse in the beginning.
This book is one of my favorites! It was romantic but appropriate and it was very suspenseful, but also inspirational! Everything I love in a book! It was absolutely amazing!! :D Loved it!
