God and Country is a book of essays that describe diverse perspectives on Christianity and patriotism. The authors care less about national interest than about the well-being of the people of all nations.
Since most pacifist leaders are not parochial in their world view, they do not see the U. S. national interest as paramount.
They would teach congregations about the historic, faith-rooted tradition of peacemaking. God bless America becomes too self centered.
They would reinterpret the meaning of the flag. Does it really mean liberty and justice for all?
They would maintain our humility as we share with our neighbors and speak to national leaders.
They would listen to those who believe differently than we do. Does God only bless America?
They would challenge our nation to end its reliance on violence to solve problems and call our nation to live up to its highest ideals.
The would hold our military, political and media leaders responsible for reporting the truth and seek out that catholic truth.
They would live responsibly by reducing our consumption of the world’s resources.
They would serve our brothers and sisters at home and around the world. Nationalism and patriotism can easily lead to the exclusion of others. Patriotism cannot be a primary claim for catholic Catholic Christians. 5stars
